Hello

I have been publishing this magazine for nearly six years now. It was originally called TheNorth Southampton Directory and only reached 8,000 homes which soon turned into TheSouthampton Directory when it expanded to cover 45, 000 homes as far as Hythe in thewest and Botley in the east. Bigger isn’t always best though. This is a local communitymagazine and to keep it local with local advertisers and local information I’ve re-organisedthe distribution so there are now three separate editions of Discover southampton (ontothat in a minute); Totton, central (this one) and Bitterne. By focussing a magazine on each area I can providea more local magazine.

I know there’s plenty happening in Southampton that I don’t know about. If I’m not informed or I can’t find iton the internet because I wouldn’t know to look for it I can’t print it! School fairs, church fetes, local dramagroups, charity events and so much more; this is your chance to promote any activity free of charge and sharenews, views and what’s on with your community. If you email me on [email protected] witha picture or logo and text I will happilytry to find space to feature it.

Why Discover?

I renamed The Southampton Directorybecause I’ve increased the number of titles I publish and decided to rebrand them all under the same banner.Within the Discover Magazines group we have Discover Southampton, Discover Hedge End, Discover ChandlersFord, Discover Meon Valley and the newest addition, Discover Romsey. So despite being the largest publisherin this area with a print run of 98,000 copies, each title is still local and focused on your community. and I’dlike to keep it that way as the change has been somewhat challenging!

Welcome to new readers in Nursling and Rownhams. I hope you enjoy receiving the magazine every othermonth and if you know anyone who would like to be a distributor please let me know.

Until July, then... and good luck to all our youngsters sitting exams in May and June. Best wishes,

“Help, I’m not psychic!”

a stunning exhibition of photographs byPatrick Lichfield is being displayed atMottisfont from the 19th May to the 1stJuly, offering a unique insight into hisglamorous world. It presents fascinatingmontages of the Polaroids he took on everyshoot, on display for the first time. It alsopresents a striking group of Lichfield’siconic photographs of the royal, the rich andthe famous, including a young Bob Geldof,Sir John Gielgud and Joanna Lumley.Particularly striking – and timely in thisDiamond Jubilee year – is Lichfield’s doubleportrait of HRH The Queen and PrincePhilip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Lichfield started out in the 1960s as aphotographer’s assistant on £3 a week, butover the next four decades he gainedinternational renown, contributingnumerous now-famous photographs to

newspapers, prestigiousmagazines andprivatecollections.Though he wasthe 5th Earl ofLichfield andcousin to the Queen, in his professional lifehe was known simply as Patrick Lichfield.

Over the years – 1971 to 2004 - Lichfieldproduced thousands of Polaroids –preparatory ‘snaps’ of enormous interestand insight into his sitters.

Lichfield once said, “Polaroids tell us so muchof that moment in time, and my own diaries –if ever I wrote them – would contain dozensof them.” Now visitors can gaze into hisdazzling world and enjoy this unique recordof his illustrious career.
