Thetherapy produces a deep state ofrelaxation which helps to balancethe body’s natural energy field.Reiki has been reported to helpalleviate physical pain, releaseenergy blocks, lift mental andemotional distress, boost theimmune system, promote woundhealing and increase the body’sblood flow.

Marcellus Now Home to Rare Miniature Donkeys

A piece of Italy’s history isalive and well and walking aroundon four legs in Marcellus NewYork. The new Marcell-ass Miniscompany on Slate Hill Road is theonly breeding farm of MiniatureMediterranean Donkeys in thenortheast.

”They’re the perfect pets,”says Eileen Sabine of Marcell-assMinis. “They’re snugly and huggy. They’re just amazing.”

Sabine is raising seven MiniatureMediterranean Donkeys with herhusband, Mike. Female donkeysare called jennets, males are calledjacks. The donkeys have a sweet, sociable disposition. Most donkeysat maturity (3 years) are less than35 inches tall and weigh less than200 pounds. They come in manycolor combinations but all miniaturedonkeys have a black cross in theirhair down their back and acrosstheir shoulders. Some peoplebelieve the cross on their backs is areminder of when a donkey helpedcarry the cross of Jesus.

The National Miniature DonkeyAssociation in Rome, New Yorkreports purebred Miniature Don-keys in the Mediterranean area aredisappearing largely due to themixing of the breed with largervarieties of donkey. “For thisreason, the Donkeys in NorthAmerica have global genetic value,”the NMDA website reports.

The species was practicallyextinct when Robert Green broughtthirty Miniature MediterraneanDonkeys to North America in theearly 1900’s. Today their popula-tion is nearly 20,000 in the UnitedStates.

Eileen and Mike are expectingtheir third baby donkey in April.Their 5-year-old jennet named‘Cookie’ is due to deliver then aftera 13-month gestation.

Since donkeys are herd animals,Sabine says they only sell theirMiniature Mediterranean Donkeysin pairs unless the donkey is beingpurchased as a companion toanother animal like a horse. Sabinesays a donkey’s worth is deter-mined by its pedigree. Her animalsare priced between $800 and$3,500.

“They’re just precious animals,”says Sabine. “They have just purelove and trust.”

Sabine welcomes visitors totheir farm. They can be reached at315-673-0858 [email protected].

This holiday season Hanyaksays she shipped her unique choco-late pizza products to countriesincluding Germany, France, Italy,Japan, United Kingdom andAustralia. The reason Hanyak’s chocolatepizzas are so popular is a secretingredient that has been passeddown from generation to generationin Marcellus. It’s Marcellus’ ownMartha Jane’s original English

Toffee. According to Hanyak, back in 1919, Martha Jane spent$5 on a candy making kit. Hermother even scolded her forspending so much money. Withintwo years, she had 50 peopleworking for her to turn out the mostdelicious nut crunch anyone hadever experienced. Eventually theCummings family of Marcellusbegan to make the famous “almondbutter crunch.” For more than 40years they made and sold the sweetstuff from their home on NorthStreet in Marcellus. Now Bonnieowns the secret recipe and adds itto her decadently delicious choco-lates.
