The Storage Optimizer ServerName needs to be specifiedin the Global Options file.
HPE Storage Optimizer canbe launched from: Backup-> Actions -> Storage Optimizer
HPE Storage Optimizer - Use cases
Key drivers for solution Key benefits of solutionBackup more data in less time - Speed-up backup by archiving and stubbing files based on
policies- Identify and optimize redundant, obsolete, and trivial data
Reduce the total amount of storage needed for unstructured data – Backup Optimization!
- Identify redundant, obsolete, and trivial data- Move and delete selected data- De-duplicate data across different repositories and different
storage tiers
No visibility into the massive volumes of data that we have now
- A highly intuitive and visual user interface that takes the pain and guesswork out of policy setting
- Apply complex policies and enriched metadata to optimize storage consumption
- Superior file analysis

VMware VDISK parallel backup
13
Use Cases
– Out of many Vmware VM‘s there is one or a couple of VM‘s running a number of largeVDISKS and the former integration backed up those VDISK‘s serially per VM.
– Resource usage not perfect since one large VM could be responsible for a large overall backup runtime making other backup specs wait.
– Remark: The number of parallel backups is still limited by the number of connections againstthe vCenter Server. Check „omnirc“ on the backup server (default: 9 connections)
Parallel VMDK backup for VMwareImproved performance with parallel streaming
Parallel VMDK backup for VMware Other VMware enhancements– VMware 6 U1 support
– Integration of VDDK 6 U1
– VMware GRE support for vCenters in linked mode
– UI display of hostname vs. UUID

DP with StoreOnce RMC 1.2 Integration
18
Use case
– A customer has HPE 3PAR Storage and HPE StoreOnce running a storage infrastructure and wantsto make use of Recovery Manager Central (RMC) features like snapshots and Express Protect.
– HPE DataProtector is in use to orchestrate all backup/recovery tasks including 3PAR features
– Tape Offload/Export is needed for long term retention (Snapshot + Tape Option)
– Centralized Management and Reporting/Analysis of all backup/restore activity is requested
HPE StoreOnce RMC 1.2 Integration Features
– DP can kick off SnapShot, Snapshot+Tape orExpress Protect
– „Tape“ copies can be further copied to anysecondary backup device. „Tape“ can also be a SmartCache ...
– Supports backup of VMware VM‘s today
– DP Online Integration Licenses are involved (1 per ESX Host)
– No other DP licenses involved unless data is movedto tapes or backup-to-disk devices (AB2D)
Check remarks in speaker notes
HPE StoreOnce RMC 1.2 Basics
– Recovery Set:– Recovery set refers to a unit of management in RMC that
construct and functions like a container containing one or more volumes and the default policies associated with the snapshots that needs to be created.
– Snapshot Set:– A snapshot is a set of reference pointers, pointing to data
stored on HPE 3PAR StoreServ. Snapshot Set enable you to create group snapshot on local or remote array. By default, local snapshot is enabled.
– Backup Policy:– Backup Policies supports you to create a point-in-time
snapshot of the data used for backups. An effective way to back up live data is to quiesce it temporarily, take a snapshot, and then resume live operations (like done with ZDB). RMC backup works in conjunction with storage arrays to provide snapshot functionality for backup.
– DP creates both Recovery Sets and Snapshot Setsautomatically. Backup Policies have to be createdmanually via RMC GUI.
