ABOUT IGUAZÚ
Ranked as the world's second largest ones, Iguazu Falls are located in South America, close to the
point where Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina join borders. The Iguazu River forms a border between
Argentina and Brazil. The majority of the falls actually lie in Argentina (Cataratas del Iguazú ) and the
rest in Brazil (Foz do Iguaçu ). Depending on the time of year, there can be several hundred individual
falls situated on a two mile stretch along a crescent shaped cliff. The height of the highest falls is
equal to a twenty-four story building, about 265 feet tall. The thunderous roar can be heard from
miles away. A major highlight of Iguazu is the fourteen waterfalls that make up Devil's Throat
(Garganta del Diablo.) The force of the water causes spray to rise one hundred feet and results in
ever-present giant rainbows. Iguazu Falls are a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. The word Iguazu
come from the Native American Guarani word for "great water." The falls were forms by volcanic
activity approximately 100 million years ago.
The Iguazu falls are part of a semi-tropical jungle ecosystem. Both Argentina and Brazil have created
national parks surrounding the Falls. On the Argentinean side, there are jungle trails and bird hikes.
There are 500 species of birds, 80 species of mammals, and an immense variety of reptiles, fish, and
insects. The butterfly population is amazing. Park wild animals include tigers, jaguars, monkeys,
coatis, alligators, and crocodiles.
DAY 1: IGUAZÚ
Transfer from your hotel in Buenos Aires to domestic airport and fly to Iguazu. Arrival and transfer to
your Hotel. Accommodation at Saint George Hotel 4* with breakfast.
During the afternoon we will visit the Wanda Mines. The Wanda Mines: Amethyst Treasures of
Misiones. In the misted shadow of the largest waterfall of South America, Iguazú, lies Wanda Mines, a
peculiar side attraction worth a visit for those interested in gemstones, geology, or jewelry. Located
just 55 km (34 miles) to the south part of Iguazú Falls, these stone mines are easily accessible . A
knowledgeable local guide leads you down past fantastic geodes embedded in basalt to the caverns
where amethyst is extracted. The mines also contain topaz, quartz, jasper, rock crystal and agate. Pick-
your-own crystal is a no-no, but touching is encouraged, as are pictures posed in the narrow caverns
and arches of the mine. A small gravel lot, a kiosk, small café, and gift shop are the only developments
around the mines themselves. The environmental ramifications of the gemstone extraction at Wanda
Mines haven’t been studied, but it is small scale and delicate extractions forbade the use of heavy-duty
explosives, so environmentalist shouldn’t be too horrified.
The mining here also provides employment to local artisans from the gemstone extraction, processing
and sale of the stones. Tours end at the gift shop, where visitors can purchase polished and natural
stones, wind chimes and jewelry with precious and semi-precious stones.
Return to your hotel and night special Dinner with local food in a local restaurant.
