How do we answer Jesus’ call to be His disciple
through the theme of Vocation?
Hear— try to show how this helps us see the connection between vocation
and being Jesus’ disciple.

Think — to help reflect on how God may be calling us through different
vocations to be a better disciple. • St John Mary Vianney (patron saint of parish priests) wrote a very thoughtful
reflection on the role of a priest https://www.fisheaters.com/holyorders2.html, a
section could be used to reflect on how we view priests
• The Church’s teaching on marriage. In 2014 and 2015 Bishops and catechists
from around the world met with Pope Francis to discuss how the Church
supports married couples and families. He responded to this meeting (called a
Synod) with a letter to Catholic families called Amoris Laetitia which means The
Joy of Love (this type of letter is called an Apostolic Exhortation). Here are
some quotations to think about
• “Few human joys are as deep and thrilling as those experienced by two
people who love one another and have achieved something as the
result of a great, shared effort.” (AL130)

• Here let me say a word to fiancés. Have the courage to be different.
Don’t let yourselves get swallowed up by a society of consumption and
empty appearances. What is important is the love you share,
strengthened and sanctified by grace. You are capable of opting for a
more modest and simple celebration in which love takes precedence
over everything else. (AL212)
• The family is called to join in daily prayer, to read the word of God and
to share in Eucharistic communion, and thus to grow in love and
become ever more fully a temple in which the Spirit dwells. (AL29)
• The sacrament of marriage is not a social convention, an empty ritual or
merely the outward sign of a commitment. The sacrament is a gift given
for the sanctification and salvation of the spouses… Marriage is a
vocation, inasmuch as it is a response to a specific call to experience
conjugal love as an imperfect sign of the love between Christ and the
Church. (AL72)
• In 1980 a similar synod took place when St John Paul II was Pope. His
Apostolic Exhortation is called Familiaris Consortio, which means the fellowship
of family. Here are some quotations from this:
• Spouses are therefore the permanent reminder to the Church of what
happened on the Cross; they are for one another and for the children
witnesses to the salvation in which the sacrament makes them sharers.
(FC13)
• Thus the little domestic Church, like the greater Church, needs to be
constantly and intensely evangelized: hence its duty regarding
permanent education in the faith…the family, like the Church, ought to
be a place where the Gospel is transmitted and from which the Gospel
radiates…the future of evangelization depends in great part on the
Church of the home. (FC51-52)
• Prayer Ideas
• Asking Prayers
• For more vocations to the priesthood and religious life
• For our seminarians and priests
• For guidance to know what God is calling us to
• Thanking Prayers
• For our priests, deacons, nuns, sisters, friars and monks
• For calling us and giving the skills to live his call
• For those who work in vocational professions
• Discernment/Choices — Discernment is an important part of vocation.
Discernement is carefully and prayerfully considering the choices we have, to
see which God is calling us to. An activity to consider is how we make choices:
follow this LINK to a resource that can be used to do this. This can be used
with a class or as part of a Collective Worship
• All vocations (priesthood, religious life, marriage or the single life) are a means
to an end! They help us live out our first vocation to be holy, to be a saint. How
can we live that vocation now?

Do • Diocesan Vocations Team: Fr Paul Newman and Canon Jonathan Cotton head
up our Diocesan Vocations Team. Please visit their website for lots of
information about vocations: www.nottinghamvocations.co.uk. The diocese
also has four County Priest Promotors connected with each CMAT (details
below). The Diocesan Vocations Directors and the County Priest Promoters
have material available for school visits, assemblies, careers events, with
Display material, prayer cards, leaflets and so on. They are gradually gathering
local teams around them to respond to requests from local schools and
parishes. The local promoters are:
• Our Lady of Lourdes CMAT (Nottinghamshire) – Fr Christopher Thomas,
The Assumption, Beeston
• St Thérèse of Lisieux CMAT (Lincolnshire) – Fr. Matthew Jakes, St Hugh’s
Church, Lincoln
• St Thomas Aquinas CMAT (Leicestershire) – Fr. John Owens, c/o St
Thomas More, Leicester
• St Ralph Sherwin CMAT (Derbyshire) – Canon Ka Fai Lee, Our Lady of
Lourdes, Mickleover
• Alumni Visits — invite past pupils back to share about their jobs/careers/
vocations and how that helps them to be a disciple
• Vocations Day — invite local clergy and religious to share their stories with
pupils, with the opportunity to ask them questions
• Design the perfect disciple/saint — What would the perfect disciple look like?
Design a perfect disciple but what they look like must tell us what their skills/
characteristics are! For example, if they think a disciple should be a good
listener they might need really big ears or many ears. If they need to be loving
they might need a big heart! The idea is that what is created looks nothing like
a real person because the perfect disciple doesn’t exist. God is calling us to be
his disciple, this does not mean we have to be perfect
• Write a ‘job advert’ for a disciple, nun, priest, deacon, husband/wife (LINK)
This is an opportunity to explore what is needed to live out these vocations
• Write a letter to a seminarian of our diocese to encourage him in his
discernment and training to be a priest. Current Seminarians and addresses:
Final Year — Deacon Lim Gamsi, St Mary’s College Oscott, Chester Road,
Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, B73 5AA. Pre-Seminary Year Gregory Tomlin
and Maurice Taylor Real Colegio de Ingleses, Calle Don Sancho 22, 470002,
Valladolid, SPAIN.

R.E. Links • GCSE:
• Topic: Evangelisation — central to all vocations is the call to share our
faith with others. Pope Francis’s first Apostolic Exhortation Evangelli
Gaudium is focused on Evangelisation, how and why we are called to it
• Topic: Sin and Forgiveness looks at the sacraments including Marriage
and Holy Orders
• Important Document: Lumen Gentium is one of the four major documents
of the Second Vatican Council. Saint Paul VI saw this document as the
main focus of Vatican II, and the main focus of the document (and
therefore the Council) being the ‘Universal Call to Holiness’, which is our
first and most important vocation. This can be found in Chapter V (LG 39-
42)
• Come and See — Topic 2 on Belonging/Baptism/Vocations/Life Choices, will
be a great foundation for this topic and help recall the knowledge from this
topic last term
Remember! It can be easy to get carried a way with doing things but it is important to
remember that our focus on Vocation is not just about exploring different vocations
but is a away of showing that there are many different ways we can respond to the
call of discipleship. At the forefront of what we do should be the question: How will
this focus on vocation help our community better answer Jesus’ call to be his
disciple today?
