Disbudding
CLMS-2509
Definition:
• The process of the removal of horn buds From a young Animal.
• Disbudding involves destroying the horn-producing cells (corium) of the horn bud.
Note: the sooner the disbudding is done after birth, the less pain it will cause to the Animal.
Indications:
Horns are removed to prevent the following conditions:• Horn may cause injuries to handler or other cattle.• Horned livestock take up more space.• In some individuals, horns may grow towards the head. Causing injury.• Horn Cancer or tumor• fracture of horn
Feeling for horn bud
Identify the horn buds at each side of the poll.
Clipping / Trimming:
• Clip hairs around the base of bud & prepare site aseptically.
Identifying Cornual Nerve
Anaesthesia:
• Local Anaesthesia Lignocaine HCl 2%
• 10 ml on both side of poll used S/C

Application of Balm:
Application of Paste:
Antibiotic Spray:
Post-disbudding considerations
keep calves dry for at least 24 hours .
The animal should be kept at hygienic place & should not be allowed to move out.
Healing occurs mostly in one month
If necessary fly repellant should be used
