This two-week course is designed to teach medical students the theoretical and practical basics of disaster management: Step 1: Theoretical introduction to the special aspects of disaster medicine (e-learning pre-course) Step 2: Practical exercises in emergency medicine including simulation based training Step 3: Disaster medicine and mass casualty scenarios (Triage, resource management and medical leadership) Step 4: Training with experts in managing mass casualty incidents Course programme: Day 1: Welcome, campus tour and get together party Days 2-6: Full-time training sessions: Basic and advanced life support, prehospital care, emergency trauma care, emergency ECG interpretation, special emergency situations (polytrauma, thermal trauma, obstetric and pediatric emergencies) Days 7-13: Full-time study trips: Fire department, police department, German red cross (DRK SEG), underground fire-fighting practice facility, decontamination simulation, and sailing trip.
