Disability: Key Concepts

■ UN Convention on the Rights of the Persons with Disabilities (2007): “The disability results from the interaction between persons with impairments and attitudinal and environmental barriers that hinders their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others”.

■ Inclusivity: Disability inclusion involves more than mere encouragement and refers to genuine policies and practices that makes possible for the disabled people to have full participation in society, benefiting from the same resources, assuming similar roles and responsibilities, participating to decision-making processes, etc. the same as people without disabilities.

■ Accessibility: Not a priviledge but a right, accessibility refers to the making of products, services or environments for people who experience disabilities. Accesibility is a “material” prerequisite for inclusivity.
