What are they ?

Page 3: Disaster!

ones ? Who is responsible for

it ?

Page 4: Disaster!

Some people came with guns… and there was lots of firing… I don’t know where are my parents… now I m only seeing lots of people lying on ground .

Page 5: Disaster!

Mam , please tell us about disasters…

Mam , what is earthquake or war?

They are disasters…

Okay … listen carefully.

Page 6: Disaster!

A disaster is a natural or man-made hazard resulting in an

event of substantial extent causing significant physical

damage or destruction, loss of life, or drastic change to the

environment. It is a phenomenon that can

cause damage to life and property and destroy the

economic, social and cultural life of people.

Page 7: Disaster!

How many types of disasters are there ? Is war also a

disaster ?

There are 2 types of disasters. And war is a

man made disaster. Lets know types of disaster in

detail…..

Page 8: Disaster!

Types of disasters… There are two

types of disasters :Natural disasters.Man made disasters.

Page 9: Disaster!

Natural disaster …

Page 10: Disaster!

A natural disaster is a consequence when a natural hazard affects humans and/or the built environment.

Various phenomena like earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, floods and cyclones are all natural hazards that kill thousands of people and destroy billions of dollars of habitat and property

Page 11: Disaster!

Man made disasters…

Page 12: Disaster!

Man-made disasters are the consequence of technological or human hazards. Examples include fires, transport accidents, industrial accidents, oil spills and nuclear explosions/ radiation.

War and deliberate attacks may also be put in this category.

Page 13: Disaster!

Mam please tell some disasters.

Yes mam we want to know more

about both types of disasters.

Okay… I’ll tell you about the most common disasters which affects humans and cause loss of life.

Page 14: Disaster!

Earthquake

Page 15: Disaster!

Also known as temblors, the effect of the rumbling produced by these earthquakes results in destruction of structure such as buildings, bridges and dams as well as loss of human life.

Although collapsing buildings

usually claim maximum of lives in case of earthquakes but the destruction is often compounded by mud slides, fires, floods, or tsunamis.

Page 16: Disaster!

Tsunami

Page 17: Disaster!

A tsunami is a series of water waves caused by the displacement of a large volume of a body of water, generally an ocean or alarge lake. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other underwater explosions

Page 18: Disaster!

Wars…

Page 19: Disaster!

Warfare has destroyed entire cultures, countries, economies and inflicted great suffering on humanity.

War is a conflict between relatively large groups of people, which involves physical force inflicted by the use of weapons.

Page 20: Disaster!

Radiation contamination

Page 21: Disaster!

When nuclear weapons are detonated or nuclear containment systems are otherwise compromised, airborne radioactive particles (nuclear fallout) can scatter and irradiate large areas. Not only is it deadly, but it also has a long-term effect on the next generation for those who are contaminated.

Page 22: Disaster!

but mam why can’t we prevent them from happening…

Yes mam if they doesn’t happen then we will not have any problem .

Natural disasters could not be prevented …only thing we can do is to anticipate them.

So how can we do that ?

Page 23: Disaster!

Avoiding most of these disasters is almost impossible as they are unpredictable, and occur all of a sudden. However, we can try to reduce their effects by taking various precautionary measures.

Page 24: Disaster!

For EarthquakeYou can reduce it's impact by building houses which are capable to withstand earthquake –Also the people can be given training about how to save oneself as well as the the life of others during the earthquake. People can be trainied to act responsibly in coping with the aftermath of the earthquake, by helping out the victims, giving the first-aid to the wounded people, and calling the hospital if possible, and so on.

Page 25: Disaster!

For floods / tsunami :

The government can take actions like, doing the survey of flood prone areas and passing a law that makes it illegal to build houses (or huts) in such places. Such places usually constitute the banks of the big rivers which get flooded during the monsoon season.

Page 26: Disaster!

Though natural could not be prevented but man made disaster could….Like for fire accidents wiring should be checked. Inflammable things should be kept carefully and so on.In case of chemical accidents we should handle chemicals carefully .And for preventing wars to happen we all should try to respect each others feelings, and solve the problem by peaceful means.

Since the reason for man made disaster is ignorance, Illiteracy, unawareness , carelessness and so on therefore we all should be aware and literate.

Page 27: Disaster!

In short, education (or awareness), good governmental planning and legal provision, afforestation, proper planning in building a strong and safe house with emergency exits, and so on are the keys to reduce the effects of the dreadful natural disasters…

We can do a little only …. So be SAVE !!!
