Message from the Administrator and Interim General ManagerWe are very happy to share with you the Canterbury-Bankstown Council’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan.

Disability affects all of us. In Australia, more than 4 million people have some form of disability. This is an important plan for everyone.

This plan will make sure we are doing everything we can to improve the lives of people with disability, so everyone is included in the community, and noone is limited by social or physical barriers.

This plan will promote equity and access for all people living in, or visiting Canterbury-Bankstown, and reflects Council’s commitment to inclusion and opportunity for all.

Richard Colley Administrator

Matthew Stewart Interim General Manager

Why we Made the PlanThe National Disability Strategy was made to improve the lives of people with disability in Australia. All Council’s will need to work towards this goal.

Canterbury-Bankstown Council believes that being included and having equal opportunities to participate in the community is everyone’s right.

The LawIt is against the law to discriminate against people because they have a disability.

The Disability Inclusion Act 2014 requires that people with disability be entitled to the same human rights as people without disability. It states that people with disability should be included in the community, have choice and control of how they want to live, and decide on the services and supports they receive.

Canterbury-Bankstown Council has made this plan to support the law.

Our Community• We have 350,983 residents in Canterbury-Bankstown.

• 18,520 of those people have a disability.

• 29, 616 of those people living in Canterbury-Bankstown over 15 years of age receive unpaid assistance.

• We are ageing

• We speak many languages…

• Arabic

• English

• Greek

• Mandarin

• Vietnamese

We are all DifferentSometimes people with disability…• Need support with money;

• Spend time at day services;

• Live by themselves and do not need help or;

• Have carers to help them.

How we Made the Plan• We formed a reference group

of people with disability to help guide us;

• We asked staff at Council what we could do;

• We asked people with disability to complete a survey;

• We talked to lots of people with disability about their experiences; and

• We used that information to create actions for our plan.
