FROM THE PRINCIPAL Today Show visiting Dirranbandi We started the week with a very early morning waking up with Sylvia and Tim from the Today Show. It was wonderful to join the Dirranbandi Community for breakfast and to have the opportunity to showcase our town, students and Agricultural Studies program on National Television. School Athletics Carnival Despite the challenge of windy weather, last week’s Small Schools Athletics Carnival proved to be a wonderful day for the Dirranbandi, Bollon and Hebel School communities. The participation of students from all schools was outstanding. Students were very encouraging of each other, displaying great sportsmanship and school and team spirit. There were a number of notable individual student performances during the carnival with records broken and personal best set. Congratulations to all students! Special mention goes to Culgoa House awarded Ball Games Trophy and Balonne House awarded Overall Points Champion Team, P&C Average Shield and the Relays Champion Team. Parent and community support was definitely appreciated by our athletes with many students pushing that little bit harder with the encouragement of the crowd. Thank you to our family and friends! Thank you to staff, parent and friends for your assistance and support in helping to make the day a success! Carnival results are detailed with-in this newsletter.

Celebrating our amazing support staff during School Support Staff Recognition Week Next week we recognise the significant contributions that all of our Support Staff make to ensure that our students and teachers have the strong foundation they need to be successful every day. School Support Staff includes our Administration Officers, our Teacher Aides, our Cleaners and our Grounds Officer. On behalf of the Dirranbandi School community I would like to acknowledge and thank our School Support Staff for the wonderful work that they do each day and for their ongoing commitment to our school. On Wednesday we will hold a special morning tea to say thank you to all of our wonderful Support Staff on behalf of our whole school community. School Opinion Survey Today all families will receive a blue letter inviting them to participate in the School Opinion Survey. The survey is undertaken each year by the department’s State Schools Division to obtain the opinions of parents/caregivers, students and school staff about important aspects of schooling. The survey is designed to help schools identify what they do well and what they can improve. Again this year the School Opinion Survey can be completed online. The survey is open until the 24th August. The blue letter outlines the process and a unique code to access your Parent/Caregiver survey. Selected students will also have the opportunity to complete their survey at school in the coming weeks. All families and school staff are invited to complete the survey prior to the 24th August to ensure that your opinion is included in our School’s report. The report will help our School and Education Queensland to further understand how to better meet the needs of our community. If you have any queries about the survey, or would like to complete the survey at school please contact the School Office. We understand that internet access can be challenging in our rural location, use of computers or iPads, along with a tea or coffee are available at the school to assist families in completing the survey. Your opinion counts! School Review Our school review occurred on Monday 6 August and Tuesday 7 August. Thank you to students, staff, parents and community members for your involvement and assistance in this process. Your participation helped the team to gain a deeper understanding of our school and community. The Department of Education and Training has introduced new performance reviews for Queensland state schools in 2015. The reviews do not rate or compare schools but provide independent and quality feedback to help schools continue to improve outcomes for students. All schools will have a review at least every four years. A final report is made available to parents and the community on the school’s website.

SCHOOL CAPTAIN’S REPORT

Week 4 has been very busy for both students and staff. This week, we all had to recover from Balonne's victory win last Friday at the Athletics Carnival and the visit from the Today Show in the early hours of Monday morning. Once again, thank you to students, parents and staff for your attendance on Monday. It just goes to show that no matter where you are, opportunities are around every corner and all you have to do is seize the day. On Tuesday, the 9/10 class had a visit from Mrs Woodrow, our Guidance Officer, and participated in an activity that helped us learn what we would like and dislike in a job. At the end of the activity, we were shown the top 20 and 40 jobs that would best suit us. Please remember that the Blue Light Disco is on tonight. I hope that lots of students attend. Wishing everyone a relaxing weekend to start Week 5. Have a relaxing long weekend. Jessica Purvis - School Captain

PBL MEETING Wednesday 15th August, 3:15pm in the Year 5/6 Room. Come along, parents are always welcome!

FROM THE HOC

Our school is a fantastic place and it reflects the nature and spirit of our whole community. Monday morning’s TODAY SHOW visit, and breakfast thanks to the Dirranbandi Progress Association, was a great way to start the week. While only a small snippet, we were able to show Australia what a resilient community we are and what amazing opportunities our Agricultural Studies Program brings for our students. Our Agricultural Studies program could not be the success it is without the support of the community and our local farmers. While it was hard to come down from the cloud after Monday morning, classes have continued as usual. As I walk around the school, I notice that ALL classrooms contain ALL students actively engaging in their studies. I am truly reminded of how blessed I am to work with such an amazing staff and focussed students who strive to improve in their skills and understanding. This week I have seen: Prep-Year 2 enhancing their measurement skills. Mrs Cookson was demonstrating how to measure with informal units and

personal referents (hand/finger/foot). The students were engaging in meaningful conversation to make connections in their learning. Some students were even caught out measuring the distance between their eating position at lunch, and the bin they were placing their rubbish in.

Year 3/4 students engaged with spelling activities using word sorts, locating the definition of Greek and Latin roots, as well as THRASS segmentation.

Year 5/6 students also engaged with spelling practice using a word find. Year 7/8 Ag Studies students breaking down subject specific words in order to understand the vocabulary as well as be able to

accurately spell it. Year 9/10 students familiarising themselves with Baz Lurman’s Romeo + Juliet as part of their literature studies this term.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE: Get those forms up to date, if you have completed the challenge drop it in to me so that I can update the data sheet. Don’t forget to keep on reading………. Mrs Hadenfeldt
