On behalf of the Aerospace Wales Team, Directors, Ambassadors and all our Forum members, I offer you a very warm welcome to this brochure. In here you will find more information
on what the Forum is involved with, what we strive to do for our members, the wider aerospace, defence and space community in Wales and a flavour of the kind of benefits our members enjoy by being part of the Forum.
The Aerospace Wales Forum is the trade association for all companies and partner organisations operating in the Aerospace, Defence and Space sectors in Wales, through access to events, networking opportunities and industry expertise.
From the advertising content of this brochure, the aim is to give a sense of the depth and breadth of products, services and capabilities offered by a selection of our Forum members. This brochure would not achieve its aim without the support, investment and involvement of our members and I am extremely grateful for their commitment to this initiative.
As a membership organisation, Aerospace Wales is fully conscious that our value is measured by what we deliver and achieve for our members. To this end, we are committed to exploring new ideas and finding new clusters/collaborations that offer even more value to the membership. Continuous Improvement has long been a vital cog in the aerospace business ‘machine’ and Aerospace
Wales welcomes constructive feedback, whether you are a member or not.
In the meantime, please enjoy the content and information within this brochure. If you are not a member of Aerospace Wales right now, why not come along to one of our events and see for yourself the value and opportunities that you and your business could enjoy regularly.
Wishing you all continued success in your business and we hope we can be of service to you in the near future. Yours,John WhalleyChief Executive Officer

I would like to welcome you to the new trade directory and thank you for your current and ongoing support of the Aerospace Wales Forum. The past year has been another successful one for the Forum, we have seen the number of member
companies grow by 50% since the last edition and we look forward to welcoming our new member companies at the various events and trade shows we will be attending over the coming year.
In parallel we have been very mindful of how we spend our members and sponsors funds, as a result we have taken active steps to reduce our day to day operating costs and we have achieved a 10% year on year saving in these costs and will continue to keep our spending under review.
At the time of writing we are seeing a great deal of uncertainty around the future course that the BREXIT process will take and this is not helping add clarity to our business environment. This said we have to continue to work through this until the position becomes settled, it is worth noting that despite this challenge, the aerospace sector in Wales remains strong and well established, it employs in excess of 23,000 people undertaking aviation and high precision engineering activities spread throughout Wales.
In the North of the country we have centers of design and manufacturing, at Parc Aberporth in Mid Wales the UK is developing technology and procedures that will allow UAV’s to seamlessly integrate into
civil airspace and in the South we have significant maintenance and repair organisations based at Cardiff Airport and St Athan. This is all in addition to the many local companies that provide a robust supply chain into these organisations. We should not forget that with the 8 Universities based in Wales we are able to educate and train the next generation of skilled staff that will be required to continue to grow and evolve the Aerospace sector and to take advantage of new technologies and materials that make aircraft and aviation more efficient and produce a lower impact on the natural environment. The recent UK announcement on a new UK Space policy offers all of us a new opportunity for development and growth and which we all need to position ourselves to take full advantage of.
I am and remain very confident in the future of our sector generally and I believe that by having a dedicated forum where we can meet and discuss ideas and solve problems both with other industry colleagues and members of the Welsh Assembly Government can only make us more successful in the long run.
Once again thank you for being a member of our organisation and I look forward to meeting with you at our events and I wish you continued success.

The sector also has its own Enterprise Zone. Since 1938, St Athan EZ in South Wales has been a major centre for aerospace and defence. Today, the area is dedicated to shaping the sector’s future, as part of Welsh Government’s £60 million Cardiff Airport and St Athan EZ. With a 1,800 metre runway resurfaced in 2009 and full airfield support, the Enterprise Zone is Wales’ new hub for Aerospace and Defence. It has been a major base for the Ministry of Defence (MOD) since its opening.
Deeside EZ includes global companies such as Airbus, Electroimpact and Gardner Aerospace and at the Snowdonia Aerospace Centre at Llanbedr is a site being developed for further RPAS and potentially for a Space Port. Civilian and military projects work here side by side, in areas including maintenance, repair and overhaul and non-destructive testing, as well as pilot and engineering training and ‘end of life’ aircraft recycling services.

DefenceWales is a cornerstone of UK defence operations, through provision of workforce skills - as well as the availability of secure sites and airspace. More recently, we’ve added new strengths to our infrastructure. These include training, systems and defence technologies. Around 100 companies in Wales are involved in creating defence applications such as software, biometrics, optical design and imaging.
One example is Airbus Defence and Space. From its base in Newport, the company is developing defence communication and information systems using local expertise and ingenuity. Working in South East Wales, with General Dynamics, Axiom and TT Electronics nearby, these companies have been able to access a highly skilled workforce – as well as the MOD’s procurement base, just a short drive away in Bristol.
Such an active Aerospace and Defence sector provides a ready market for businesses such as Qioptiq, which designs and manufactures night vision systems for the MOD. Another is Babcock, which maintains the RAF fast-jet training fleet at RAF Valley on Anglesey, and QinetiQ, experts in defence, aerospace and security. In North East Wales DECA have recently been awarded a global repair hub, undertaking MRO and upgrades for the F-35 avionic and aircraft components, whilst Raytheon UK have opened a new facility to continue their work on the RAF Sentinel and Shadow fleets. BAE Systems have operations at Glascoed and RAF Valley on Anglesey.

Wales is a major centre for MRO; 20% of the UK’s activity is managed here, and the country punches well above its weight, having just 5% of the UK population. The MRO sector continues to grow in Wales, along with the expertise of its workforce.
GE Aviation is the world MRO base for the GE90 engine, used in the twin-engine wide-body Boeing 777, one of the most powerful engines certified for civil aircraft. In addition, GE handles the GP7000, which was developed by The Engine Alliance, a joint venture between GE and Pratt & Whitney. This powers the Airbus A380 and the CFM56 family of engines – developed by CFM, which is the world’s most popular aircraft engine. The business occupies a workshop space of 1 million square feet and its customer base covers 90+ operators, from all around the world.
The St Athan Enterprise Zone, which can trace its aviation history back to 1938, has been a major centre for Aerospace and Defence. It currently has several tenants, workshops and hangars, along with a newly surfaced runway. Civilian and military projects work side by side, with works including MRO, non-destructive testing and full-scale manufacturing.
The current Airbus Broughton site was founded in 1939, as a shadow factory for the production of the Vickers Wellington and the Avro Lancaster. After the War, De Havilland took over the factory and it was used to produce various aircraft, including the Mosquito and the Comet. As well as Airbus, today the locality is the home to Raytheon, and other tenants include Aerocare Aviation and DECA, the Defence Electronics and Components Agency which has successfully tendered for F-35 avionics maintenance.
At Valley in Anglesey, the current airfield was constructed in the latter part of 1940 as an RAF fighter sector station. Valley is currently the home to RAF operations and MRO is carried out by BAE Systems and Babcock. There is significant training activity for both rotary and fixed wing aircraft, including Lockheed Martin providing simulator training on site.
British Airways is also committed to Welsh expertise, with three dedicated MRO facilities across a 50km radius in South Wales – British Airways Maintenance Cardiff, British Airways Interior Engineering and British Airways Avionic Engineering.
St Athan Aerospace Business Park also has a number of smaller companies emerging. Among them is eCube Solutions LLP, specialising in end-of life aircraft projects. St Athan is also home to Cardiff Aviation, a fully-approved and certified aviation maintenance, engineering, and technical service group.
Other MRO companies in Wales include AerFin, AerMach, Aerocare, Allied Aerosystems, AMSS, GJD Aerotech, Morson Projects, Nordam, Vaayu and Willis Asset Management. Furthermore, many of our supply chain companies provide products, parts and services for the MRO sector including: Safran Seats; PPA; Gardner Aerospace; Tritech Group; Triumph, Cottam & Brookes, TWI and more.

Wales in SpaceThe Wales Space Strategy was launched at the UK Space Conference in Liverpool in July 2015 and we now exhibit at a number of key events. We have an active Space Group that meets regularly and pulls together representatives form Industry and Academia to help drive the strategy forwards. Long established as a key player in Aerospace and Defence with companies such as Airbus, Raytheon, General Dynamics and BAE Systems, Wales has had a much lower profile in terms of its presence in the Space sector. However, with global growth projections of 7% per year we took a decision to up our game in this important industry. Our initial analysis showed that we already had some key capabilities in both the upstream (what goes into space) and downstream (the exploitation of space data and capability) and the promotion of Llanbedr airfield as a potential candidate for the proposed UK Spaceport has helped raise our profile further.
The UK Government has taken a positive decision to support growth in the sector by establishing a UK Space Agency, producing a strategy for growth in partnership with industry and establishing the Satellite Applications Catapult to help develop the key technologies. Aerospace Wales works in partnership with our colleagues in Welsh Government to build relationships with the UK space community capitalising on our existing strengths and ensuring strong alignment with the UK Space Strategy.
Welsh Universities have considerable expertise in space related research and we have brought these together as a collaborative grouping WASP – the Wales Academic Space Partnership. Aberystwyth University for example has an Intelligent Robotics Group and has supported the Beagle 2 and a number of future Mars missions. We also have some key industrial capabilities in Wales:
Qioptic Space in Bodelwyddan sits at the heart of a world class opto-electronics cluster and its products for space applications include lenses for space telescopes, radiation stable micro-sheet cover glass, optical solar reflectors and ultra thin glass. Qioptiq has an 80% share of the world market for space glass and has a space heritage stretching back to 1971.
Cardiff based IQE is firmly established as the leading global supplier of advanced
semiconductor wafers with products that cover a diverse range of applications including space, supported by an innovative outsourced foundry services portfolio that allows the Group to provide a ‘one stop shop’ for the wafer needs of the world’s leading semiconductor manufacturers.
The Pendine rocket test track, operated by Qinetiq has recently been used to support the development of the Thrust SSC project.
Teledyne Labtech based in Presteigne, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of microwave circuit solutions for applications in space and satellite communications.
As well as space hardware we also have considerable capability in the downstream area and see this whole area as having huge growth potential. For example Aberystwyth’s Earth Observation and Ecosystem Dynamics Research Group is using space derived data in a range of applications including assessment of biodiversity, remote sensing of natural hazards and the dynamics of tropical forest regeneration and degradation. An important element of the strategy will be to grow the user base of such capability.
If you feel your company would benefit by becoming a member of the Aerospace Wales Forum, or you would like to know more about our organisation visit our website at: www.aerospacewalesforum.com The website is regularly updated and offers a wide range of information from latest industry news to updates on all forthcoming aerospace events. You will also
find information on our membership, associates and global contacts as well as information on training and skills providers in Wales. If you would like to become a member of Aerospace Wales Forum simply email Operations Director Rachael Blackburn [email protected] and we will arrange for a membership pack to be sent out to you.
