Virginia Department of Elections (ElECT) The most current and complete source of information about elections and vot-ing in Virginia can be found on the Virginia Department of Election’s website, Vote.Virginia.Gov, which is updated throughout the year. See especially its citizen portal, where eligible citizens can register to vote and request an ab-sentee ballot online. Registered voters are encouraged to check the status of their registration and polling place at this site at least 30 days before an election. Local information can also be found at the websites listed on pages 3 and 4.
Voter Registration You must be registered to vote in Virginia. Voter registration is closed during the 21 days before a regularly scheduled election, 6 days before special elec-tions for statewide offices and 13 days for others. Special elections are called to fill vacancies. You are eligible to register to vote if you are:n A citizen of the United States;n A resident of Virginia;n At least 18 years of age on or before the date of the next general election;n Not registered in and not planning to vote in another state; andn Have had your voting rights restored if convicted of a felony or judged
mentally incapacitated.
You can check to see if you are registered by calling your local Registrar or by going online to Vote.Virginia.Gov, where you can also change your name or address. You do not have to re-register for each election. How-ever, to remain a qualified voter, you must notify your Registrar of any change in name or address in a timely manner.
HOW and WHERE: To register online or download a voter registration appli-cation, visit Vote.Virginia.Gov. If you have a current Virginia driver’s license or ID issued by the DMV, you can complete and submit your registration online. Otherwise, you can also download and print the registration appli-cation form from that website and take or mail it to your Registrar’s office. Voter Registration application forms are also available at your Registrar’s office, DMV offices, most public libraries and state and local government offices. See below for the address of your local Registrar.
WHEN: Voter Registration applications are accepted year round. The dead-line to register or update your information for general elections is the 22nd day before the election date. Applications arriving between the 22nd day before the election and Election Day will be processed after that election. Contact your Registrar for additional information.
After July 1, 2020: Any eligible Virginia voter who visits the DMV in person or online, and applies for, replaces, or renews their driver’s license, will be registered to vote unless they opt out.
Voting: At the polls on Election Dayn The polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. for all elections.n Check your current Voter Information letter from the Registrar’s office for
your correct polling place. You may also check at Vote.Virginia.Gov, or contact your local Registrar’s office (see below).
n All polling sites offer “curbside voting” for voters at least 65 years of age or with a physical disability, and post the necessary precinct contact infor-mation at the polling site entrance.
n In Virginia, a photo ID is required by law to vote until June 30, 2020. A complete list of acceptable forms of ID is available at Vote.Virginia.Gov (photo ID). Registered voters who do not have a valid ID can apply for a free Virginia voter photo ID at their local Registrar’s office. Starting July l, visit https://www.elections.virginia.gov/ to see a list of acceptable forms of ID for casting a ballot.
Voting: Before Election Day — Absentee Voting As of this writing, Virginia law does not allow what is called “early voting,” but registered voters who meet one of the 19 eligibility requirements may vote by absentee ballot. Call or visit the website of your local Registrar’s office for a list of the requirements or visit Vote.Virginia.Gov (casting a ballot) for complete information. There are special provisions for military, overseas voters and emergencies.
UPDATE: Fredericksburg Municipal Election will be held on May 19, and the Virginia Primary Election will be held on June 23. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic: 1) All registered voters can now mark “illness or disability” as an excuse on absentee ballots; 2) No witness signature is needed on June Virginia Primary absentee ballots. After July 1, no excuse will be needed to cast an absentee ballot.

STAFFORD COUNTy SCHOOl BOARDThe School Board holds various types of meetings of the full board, all of which are open to the public:
Regular Board Meetings are typically held on the second and fourth Tues-days of each month except July, August, November and December. In those months, there is only one meeting (usually on the second Tuesday). These meetings are normally held in the School Board chambers at 31 Stafford Av-enue, Stafford, VA 22554, unless adopted otherwise by the School Board.
Special Called Board Meetings are occasionally called when there is a time-sensitive matter that must be discussed or voted upon before the next regularly scheduled meeting. These meetings are usually held in the School Board chambers.
Work Sessions are held when the Board needs to hold a lengthy, in-depth discussion on a particular matter. Votes are not taken during work sessions. Work sessions are usually held in the executive session room unless a larger venue is needed.
Public Hearings are held when a matter arises that requires citizen input (i.e., budgets, redistricting). The location of public hearings varies.
The meetings of the Stafford School Board are broadcast live at 7 p.m. on Comcast Cable Channel 18, Cox Channel 89, and Verizon Fios Channel 38. They are then re-broadcast in a taped version on Fridays at 7 p.m., on Sat-urdays at 1 p.m., and on the following Tuesdays at 7 p.m.
