Improving communication among CSACs The Board will develop an online bulletin board as part of the existing website for Catholic School Advisory Councils in an effort to improve communications among the parent groups. The CSAC website can be found at www.tcdsb.org/csac.

Discussion over school boundaries The fixed boundaries for Blessed Sacrament Catholic School will remain in place. New boundaries are being established for St. Lawrence Catholic School: To the north--Railroad/Highway 401; to the south--Hydro Line (Flora Drive); to the east--Railroad/Lawrence Avenue/Kennedy Road and to the west—Railroad. Parents of new registrants must have primary residence within the approved attendance boundary subject to the following exceptions: i.) All students currently enrolled at St. Lawrence Catholic School be allowed to complete their schooling at the school ii.) Siblings of students, currently enrolled at St. Lawrence Catholic School be permitted to enroll at St. Lawrence

even if they reside outside the approved attendance boundary as per Board Policy SA.02 Students who are currently registered at St. Lawrence Catholic School who reside East of Kennedy Road and South of Lawrence Avenue (in the designated area) and who elect to attend St. Albert Catholic School beginning in September 2008 will be provided bussing to St. Albert Catholic School at no extra cost to the Board.

French Language Advisory Committee The Board has approved in principle the establishment of a French Language Advisory Committee. Representation on the Committee could include parents of children who are registered in French Immersion and Extended French Programs in TCDSB schools. All interested parents would be invited to an initial organizational meeting. An election process may be held to select parent representatives for the committee. Additional staff, trustee, parish and community representation would also be identified. The Committee would be dedicated to promoting French as a Second Language programs in TCDSB schools.

In lieu of this exchange, please do not review these students at the regular high school exchange of information meeting.




Winter Safety at Bus Stops Bus students and parents are reminded that extra caution should be taken during the winter months. Please take a moment and review this important information with your children. • Children should be dressed appropriately for the colder weather. Unexpected mechanical problems with the bus

may occur more frequently at this time of year. Children must be prepared for this as buses cool off very quickly. • Toronto schools rarely close and bus routes are rarely cancelled due to snow or cold temperatures. Assume that

schools are open and buses are running unless you hear otherwise through the local media. • Usually cold or stormy weather can result in bus schedules being unavoidably delayed. We encourage parents

to use extra caution with children on those days. Children should be accompanied to the bus stop or have very clear instructions on what to do if the bus does not arrive. Never leave children at the stop with no backup arrangements for an emergency.

• A build-up of ice and snow can create a safety hazard for children waiting at the bus stop. Ensure that your child understands the importance of standing back from the curb as the bus approaches the bus stop.

• Children will find it easier to walk through the ice and snow when their school books and lunches are carried in a back pack. It is also much safer for them to board the bus with their hands free to use the bus handrail.

• Tell your child never to exit the bus into a snow bank. If the bus stops and the child is unable to get out because the exit is blocked by snow, have your child tell the driver the path is not clear.

• Make sure children stay off snow banks piled near the street. While they are attractive nuisances, those snow banks can cause a child to fall into the roadway and in front of oncoming traffic.

3Rs Recap: IMPORTANT REMINDER:

Ministry of Ontario 3Rs Inspectors are coming!

The Ministry is making contact with school boards to ensure everyone is aware that it is the LAW to recycle. Your school could be visited by an Ontario Ministry of the Environment inspector to ensure that you are meeting the 3Rs requirements. Each school should have a recycling program in place to source separate recyclables (paper, cans and bottles) from waste. Each individual is responsible for their waste, and should ensure they separate recycling from the garbage. New Year TIP – Set a target Diversion rate for your school. Most schools should be diverting over 80% of their waste from landfill into recycling programs. Contact the EcoTeam for assistance in figuring out your Diversion Rate.

Earth Hour: Saturday March 29th, 2008 8-9pm. Do something locally that will be felt globally. Sign-up for the March 29th Earth Hour at 35Hwww.earthhour.org and make a statement towards Climate Change by turning off your lights from 8-9 p.m. on Saturday March 29th. Dine by candle-light. Break-out the old board games and play by candle-light. Just do your best to not use energy for that one

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR TCDSB AWARDS TCDSB AWARD OF MERIT The Toronto Catholic District School Board Award of Merit was created to recognize outstanding contributions to TCDSB and to Catholic Education. Employees and/or Trustees are considered for the award after a three year period has passed since their separation from TCDSB. All nominations must include a concise curriculum vitae of the nominee or documentation detailing the tangible contribution of the nominee to Catholic education. TCDSB ALUMNI AWARD The Toronto Catholic District School Board shall present an Alumni Award to accomplished alumni of the Toronto Catholic District School Board who were students in a TCDSB school, who are still active in the Catholic community and who have distinguished themselves in their career or accomplishments. The recipients will be chosen from diverse areas of career and endeavour. Current TCDSB employees and trustees are not eligible. Nomination information must include a description of how the nominee meets the criteria. SISTER MARY HAMILTON AWARD FOR EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS Nominations are being accepted for the Sister Mary Hamilton Award for Exceptional Students. This award is presented annually to eligible elementary and secondary exceptional students to recognize personal achievements or contributions to the lives of others. Schools are invited to submit names of eligible students together with details of the achievements or contributions of the candidates. FATHER ANDREW CUSCHIERI AWARD The search is underway for a suitable recipient for the Father Andrew Cuschieri Award. This award is presented every two years to a Toronto Catholic District School Board student between the ages of 7 and 13, inclusive, in recognition of an extraordinary humanitarian act towards another human being. Please provide details of the nominee’s qualifications for the award. ASHIF JAFFER AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN SPECIAL EDUCATION Nominations are being accepted for the Ashif Jaffer Award for Excellence in Special Education Support. This annual award recognizes a TCDSB teacher, education assistant, peer tutor/helper or volunteer who has demonstrated excellence in the support of Special Education. Nomination information must include details of the nominee’s qualifications for the award. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Throughout the year, the Toronto Catholic District School Board recognizes students who have achieved honours in a variety of disciplines by presenting them with the TCDSB Student Achievement Award. The Student Achievement Award is given to those students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement either academically, physically, spiritually or socially at the provincial, national or international level. We encourage you to participate in the recognition process by sharing news of student accomplishments throughout the year. STUDENT TRUSTEE AWARD OF EXCELLENCE IN ACADEMICS, LEADERSHIP AND CHRISTIAN VALUES The Student Trustee Award of Excellence in Academics, Leadership and Christian Values is presented annually to an eligible student graduating from a TCDSB secondary school who has demonstrated excellence in academics, leaderships and Christian values, to encourage and support him or her in pursuit of studies at a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution. The Student Trustee and members of the Catholic Student Leadership Impact Team are not eligible for this award. Student Trustee Award of Excellence in Academics, Leadership and Christian Values

The Student Trustee Award of Excellence in Academics, Leadership and Christian Values is presented annually to an eligible student graduating from a Toronto Catholic District School Board secondary school who has demonstrated excellence in academics, leaderships and Christian Values, to encourage and support him or her in pursuit of studies at a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution.

The Ontario Jurisdiction of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic, Fraternal, Family Organization, continues its provincial bursary program in honour of our State Chaplains, to assist Knights and members of their families pursuing a post-secondary education. Newcomer Champion Awards Each year, Ontario welcomes more than half of all newcomers to Canada. Immigration is vital to Ontario’s growth and newcomers play a key role economically, socially, and culturally in making Ontario strong and prosperous. The Newcomer Champion Awards program is a newly created program designed to recognize Ontarians who have facilitated cultural understanding and diversity or helped newcomers to successfully settle and integrate. Eligible activities may include, but are not limited to:

Genomics Teaching Prize The Ontario Genomics Institute (OGI) Genomics Teaching Prize is awarded annually to the Ontario secondary school teacher who best exemplifies OGI’s commitment to building the future of genomics and proteomics research. The winning teacher will receive: • a $5000 cash prize; • up to $2000 in laboratory equipment and/or instructional materials for his/her classroom; • expenses (including substitute teacher costs) to travel to the 2008 Science Teachers’ Association of Ontario

(STAO) Conference to give a lecture on his/her award-winning approach. This award is open to all senior biology teachers (Grades 11 & 12) at Ontario secondary schools. Applicants are required to nominate themselves, and to collect and submit all required materials. The purpose of THE MILLER THOMSON FOUNDATION NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP is to encourage and promote the attainment of higher educational goals for individuals who have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement, have made a positive contribution to their school through involvement in extracurricular activities and have made significant contributions of time and energy to community service programmes. The Miller Thomson Foundation National Scholarship is a long-term, ongoing initiative funded by THE MILLER THOMSON FOUNDATION. It annually awards one-year scholarships of approximately $1,000 to 200 recipients within Canada. The number of scholarships and the dollar amount is determined annually by the Foundation's Board of Governors.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE? Only students attending a Canadian secondary school, currently in their graduating year of high school, and who will be attending a post-secondary institution in the Fall to pursue a course of study within Canada leading to a degree or diploma from the accredited community college or university of their choice. Applicants must obtain a Secondary School Diploma. Quebec students should apply in their final year of CEGEP planning on attending a Canadian university.

WHAT ARE THE SELECTION CRITERIA? In addition to the candidate's academic abilities, the Board of Governors will evaluate the candidate's contribution to their school and their community through their involvement in extracurricular activities. Contributions to the community may be demonstrated by involvement in local clubs, organizations and community activities.

Jerusalem In the first week, the pilgrims will live in East Jerusalem near the Old City and visit the holy places. They will also meet each day with peacemakers and justice seekers - Israelis who are heartsick with the on-going oppression of the occupation, Palestinians who reject violence in their continuing resistance to the oppression and Internationals who accompany both in seeking just alternatives to armed conflict. Palestine During three days in Bethlehem, the pilgrims will visit the Church of the Nativity and the Shepherds’ Field. They will meet with religious leaders and learn of the plight of Palestinian Christians today. In Hebron, the pilgrims will visit the Ibrihimi Mosque over the cave where Abraham is buried meet the Christian Peacemaker Team that has been committed to violence reduction.

Galilee The last four days of the pilgrimage will be in Galilee staying at Pilgerhaus on the Sea of Galilee. Close by are the Mount of the Beatitudes, Capernaum and Nazareth, sites for prayer and reflection. St. Brendan students give gift of hair February 7, 2008 Inside Toronto Scarborough DANIELLE MILLEY Locks of Love charity to receive donations from local school Olivia, Julia and Rachel might not be able to donate money to help other children, but they do have one item of their own they're willing to part with - their hair. Olivia Spahn-Vieira, Julia Thompson, and Rachel Reigber are three of 15 students from St. Brendan Catholic School in Scarborough who will part with nearly a foot of their hair and donate it to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides hair pieces to financially disadvantaged children. Rachel, 10, had some reservations at first. She's never had short hair before and was nervous about cutting off 10 inches. "I didn't really want to do it at first but all my friends were doing it so I thought about it some more and decided I wanted to do it," she said. "They are some people in the world who don't have any hair and it helps them." Principal Dan Koenig explained the school does several fundraising and charitable activities each year. It was Julia's mother, Maria Thompson, who suggested the school do a hair donation this year. Koenig said he thought it was a good way to engage the parents, as well as having the students do something to help other kids. "That was the biggest thing, that it's children helping children," he said. "The kids really get enthused when they're helping other kids." Julia, 8, said she signed up right away. She doesn't think she'll miss her hair. "Because I'll be helping someone," she explained. Anyone can donate hair that hasn't been bleached (permed or coloured is acceptable) and that is a minimum of 10 inches. Hair must be in a ponytail or braid - it takes six to 10 ponytails to make one prosthesis hair piece. The group haircut at St. Brendan's is scheduled to take place at the last Bruin pride assembly of the year in June. Koenig said the school sent out a letter to parents in January so children who were interested would have time to grow their hair longer, and to work up the courage to cut it all off. He expects the list of 15 to grow between now and June 23. The girls said they'll be taking extra special care of their hair to make sure it is in top condition for the donation. Olivia hopes more students will sign up, she had a message for those who might be considering it. "There are some kids in the world who don't have hair and you can help them by donating some of your hair because they can't grow hair and you can always grow more," she said.

Beach students support Tuque Tuesday fundraiser February 7, 2008 02:45 PM JOANNA LAVOIE St. John Catholic School raises nearly $3,000 for the homeless Even the junior kindergarten students at St. John Catholic School in the Beach understand what it means to be homeless. Clad in their 'Raising the Roof' tuques this past Tuesday, Feb., 5, the children know that some people don't have a place to live and that buying the tuques helps those people have better lives. Teachers and students from all grades at the school participated in Tuque Tuesday, a national campaign that raises funds for and awareness about homelessness. Raising the Roof is a charity organization dedicated to finding long-term solutions to the problem.

As part of the fundraising effort, many students and staff members also donated their loose change to the campaign in the past few weeks. For about eight years now, junior kindergarten teacher Tralee Reford has organized the annual tuque sale fundraiser at the Kingston Road elementary school.

"I just saw an ad on television and I thought that maybe we could do this at our school," said Reford, an educator since 1993. "For me it's just so important. It's part of who we are as Catholics and it's holistically in our programs." Reford said that running the annual Tuque Tuesday program at St. John is a way that she can make a difference in people's lives. "We're very fortunate. There's always a little something you can do," said Reford, adding that each fall she receives call from parents wanting to support the program. "Jesus embraced people on the margins and we should too."

This year St. John has raised nearly $3,000 for the Raising the Roof campaign. A cheque presentation is planned for next month.

Students raise funds for school in Ecuador Etobicoke Guardian February 7, 2008 CYNTHIA REASON Students at Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School are helping to make the world a better place one brick at a time. In keeping with the Toronto Catholic District School Board's mandate to incorporate virtue back into the lives of its students, the school has teamed with Free the Children - Craig Kielburger network of children helping children through education - to fundraise for the building of a school for needy kids in Ecuador, said staff advisor Anna Greco.

"We're encouraging our students to be not just great academics, but to provide great Christian service in their own communities and in communities around the world," she said. It's the school's hope to bring a group of students to Ecuador to see first-hand the fruits of their fundraising labour within the next year or two. "There's big buzz out there," added Sandra Mudryj, vice principal. "Everyone's excited at the prospect of maybe going to Ecuador ourselves. It's all part of the outreach we try to do in the community." With a brand new school of their own - Father John Redmond opened the doors to its current digs in Etobicoke Lakeshore in September 2006 - students felt the project to be the best way to give back. So more than 30 teens from the school's Me to We, Social Justice, Leadership and Key Clubs banded together as an executive to organize a series of initiatives to raise the $10,000 necessary to build a school in the poverty-stricken nation.

"We've talked about a lot of different things we can do," said Me to We club member Rebecca Cowland, 17. "Bakes sales, dances, a Valentine's Day Toonie Teddy sale, and a day of silence as a sign of respect for children who have no voice." Kimberly Saqui, 16, was the recipient of Father John Redmond's principal's award for the month of January for her volunteer work with Rotary, South Etobicoke Youth Assembly (SEYA) and other local organizations. She said the arts school is also planning a talent show to get students involved by appealing to their creative passions. To get their Brick by Brick initiative off on the right foot, the school invited Carolina Arcila, an International Youth Coordinator with Free the Children, to speak about her experiences abroad. Arcila was born and raised in Colombia, but spent some of her high school years in Ecuador and was able to give the students a first-hand account of the hardships children face in getting an education there.

"My school in Ecuador was on the top of a mountain and there was a fence by the soccer field. On the other side of the fence was a garbage dump - but it wasn't just a dump, it was a community," she said. "People built houses of sticks and cardboard and plastic on top of these heaps of garbage. But that was home, that was where they raised their families." Oftentimes while on break from a spirited game of soccer, Arcila said she'd peer through the fence to see young children playing amidst the rubble of glass and dirty needles. "You hear statistics all the time - that 1.1 billion people in the world have no access to clean water, that every two seconds a child dies of poverty-related causes - but those statistics aren't just a number. Each one is a person with a face, a family and a dream," she said. Since its inception in 1995, Free the Children has built and furnished 500 schools in 45 countries, allowing more than 50,000 children to attend school each day. Students at Father John Redmond are hoping to up that tally to 501 schools.

High school soccer star Courtney Clarke wins long jump, 60 metres Courtney Clarke knows how to mix things up. It started three days ago when the 17-year-old signed her name to a soccer scholarship offer from the University of Miami at Oxford, Ohio. Last night, she was under the spotlight in another sport – track and field. A two-time athlete of the year at Toronto's Francis Libermann High, Clarke won both the senior girls long jump and 60 metres at the fourth annual Project Athletics Invitational – the first indoor track and field meet of the year. With her mother cheering her on, Clarke easily beat teammate Shivonne Modest after sprinting to the finish in a time of 8.27 seconds. Modest was clocked in at 8.98. In the long jump, Clarke took first place after clearing 5.00 metres on her final attempt. It was not as impressive as the 5.63 personal best she achieved to win a silver medal at the provincial finals last June. While Clarke said before the events that there was no pressure to win, the high-profile and multi-sport athlete said she was not pleased with her performances. "It was a bit more than rusty – not very happy but it's also the first meet of the year," said Clarke, who had interest from Princeton, Cornell and Syracuse before signing with Miami. "I've won medals at (the provincial finals) the past three years, so I know that I can do better but, to tell you the truth, I'm really not a track person – my future is in soccer." Clarke, who started playing soccer as a defender on a boys house league team in Grade 7, hasn't had much help on the school squad. The Falcons haven't made the playoffs in the past three years. "I need the conditioning, enjoy the competition and I'm doing my share to help my school and teammates," she said of participating on the track team. "It's hard work. You have to be committed. I see athletes at other schools who are turned off by (the hard work) and want results without making a sincere effort." Libermann track coach Nick Cirone knows he's been fortunate to have her on his team. "Track is not her bag and yet when she gets a chance to perform ... she dominates," he said. "Athletics and her are inseparable. She's participated in more sports at Libermann than any other female I know." Meet organizer Stanley Samuel, a former Libermann track star, said he was concerned about the future of the sport because only 15 schools attended the meet. "An Olympic year, an opportunity to compete and it's disappointing to see the small numbers," he said, acknowledging that a number of schools changed their mind because of the inclement weather.

Etobicoke's Father Henry Carr continues to eye not only a city championship but also the provincial title that slipped through their hands last year. Father Henry Carr, 37-3 in league and tournament action so far this season, won't easily forget their single-point loss to Pickering High School in the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association championship game last year. The Crusaders had to settle for second in the province after defeating Pickering twice earlier in the season. "That was a tough one," said head coach Paul Melnik. Melnik isn't counting out the competition he will meet along the road to the Toronto District Colleges Athletic Association (which features Catholic and private schools) and OFSAA finals, but he is confident in his team, especially this year's team. The boy's basketball program has been a perennial power in Toronto and Ontario in recent years and currently is ranked No. 2 in Ontario. Pickering sits at No. 1. "I can't remember the last time we lost a league game...since before me (five years) anyway," he said. With the Toronto Catholic board regular season still winding down, the playoffs won't start for the Crusaders until Thursday, Feb. 14. Playoff positions are yet to be determined, but Henry Carr is geared up and is aiming for some revenge against Pickering and the provincial crown that will go with it. "There are a lot of teams just in Toronto this year that are going to be hard to beat," Melnik admitted. "But I think with a full healthy team, we can give any of them all a run for their money but we'll definitely have to play well."




Michael Power coach gets recognition Etobicoke Guardian February 7, 2008

The Coaches Association of Ontario has named Paul McGrath the February 2008 Ontario Coach-of-the-month. McGrath, a coach of 29 years, taught at Michael Power Secondary School and became the coach of the Michael Power Trojans. At the school's recent 50th reunion, McGrath was recognized for the positive impact he had on the students he had coached over the years. "The biggest role a coach plays is to teach his athletes to be complete people, well-rounded individuals," he said. "A coach serves as more than just a teacher, they are a confident and a mentor, and this is really important to me as a coach." He has maintained many friendships with his former players. McGrath teaches the SHHHAKE principle which stands for Self Control, Humility, Heart, Honesty, Awe, Kindness and Enthusiasm.

She is very dedicated and skates 3 times a day even though she is a full time grade 9 student at Senator O’Connor College School. All her hard work paid off with her winning the Bronze medal at the novice level in the Junior National Figure Skating competition on Feb. 1. Natasha plans to continue to pursue her career in reaching her goal to go to the Olympics in 2014. We have every confidence that given Natasha’s natural talent and determination she will meet her goal!

Top scoring students will be invited to go on to the provincial competition on May 30 and 31, 2008 at Trent University in Peterborough. The details are as follows:

SUPPORT SERVICE FOR STUDENTS WITH AUTISM AUTISM COURSE

Part II What is this course about? The goal of this course is to increase the internal capacity within the TCDSB for the provision of best-practice education for students with autism spectrum disorders. A high degree of expertise in the education of students with autism spectrum disorders is best acquired through the opportunity to participate in the provision of high-quality educational programs to a large number of children with widely-ranging abilities and challenges. Who is this course for? A small number of elementary and secondary teachers who would be interested in participating in a program of expertise-development in the area of autism spectrum disorders will be selected to participate in this course. Selection will be based on demonstrated interest in and commitment to the field of autism spectrum disorders and successful teaching experience. Staff selected should also be interested in working in a specific capacity with students with autism spectrum disorders. There will be an attempt to ensure that the various geographic regions of the board are represented. Interested individuals are encouraged to apply, but should note that only a very small number of candidates can be accommodated at this time. What does it involve? This course will involve the following components: • participation in the TCDSB Autism course Part I (if this has not already been done) • participation in other Support Service for Students with Autism – sponsored in-service and networking events • participation in Support Service for Students with Autism team meetings • weekly opportunities to observe and participate in the range of more direct services provided by Support

Service for Students with Autism staff, including: direct, intensive intervention with students student assessment mentoring of classroom staff programming support to teachers and support staff consultation service collaboration with providers of contracted consultation services case conferences

Selected teachers will participate one day per week from March 17th, 2008 to May 9th, 2008 in order to participate fully in the range of activities listed above, and will work closely on those days with Support Service for Students with Autism staff. Interested candidates require the permission of their school principal to apply.

Originally a Passionist nun is currently founding a new Catholic monastery and com-munity of nuns dedicated to full engagement in the evolution of consciousness and the healing and protection of Earth.

Elementary and high school teacher, chaplain, and eco-spiritual song-writer. Her music embraces the new cosmology and bridges traditional beliefs with new scientific discoveries and earth consciousness; simple, profound and hopeful.

A priest and Director of the Passionist Earth and Spirit Center in Louisville, Kentucky, engaged in educating and mobilizing religious institutions and people of faith about eco-spirituality and the new cosmology.

All three, Gail, Jan and Joe are students for many years of Passionist Priest Thomas Berry who is a leading cultural historian, ecotheologian and environmental thinker. This conference will further the work begun by Michael Morwood and Heather Eaton at High School Forum XXI in May 2007. The workshop leaders will move in the direction of furthering the implications of the New Cosmology for the evolution of us, our students, our colleagues, our parishioners, as a species through the emerging new consciousness. Our days together will focus on Jesus as Wisdom Teacher whose challenge is needed more than ever in our time. The challenge of this great Wisdom Master is that we move forward together into transformed consciousness for the sake of the planet and all sentient beings. During our time together we will look at Jesus’ own 8 thresholds (Baptism, temptation etc) as larger cosmic events in which the universe through Jesus came to understand significant dimensions of itself and through which we too need to navigate to come into the fullness of awakened consciousness. We will also explore some of the Wisdom teachings of Jesus (parables) and their profound significance for our moment in time. The conference will give theological grounding for teacher and student understanding of The Big Bang, The Supernova Explosion, and the growth of our planet and our consciousness of that growth. Participants will be invited, in Anselm’s classic definition of theology – fides quarens intellectu; faith seeking understanding – to theologize, to look at their understanding of – not their belief in – God and Jesus of Nazareth in light of The New Story. .
