July, 2019 - June, 2020
During the last year, numerous milestones were achieved in education,
research. There had been development and release of novel technologies
in diagnostics and vaccines to improve livestock and poultry health and
production. Novel technologies in diagnosis of important livestock diseases
like FMD, Blue tongue, Japanese encephalitis; and vaccines against IBD
virus and classical swine fever virus developed and were released by the
ICAR. Further, two technologies viz., anti-tick phytoformulation and Jai-
Gopal vermi-culture were licensed to commercial houses, nine patents
were granted and three patents were filed for various technologies during
the year.
Owing to the spread of COVID-19 pandemic across the country, the ICAR-
IVRI has devoted its trained scientists, technical and other staff from
Izatnagar and Mukteswar campuses to test the suspected samples from
humans and animals by availing its biosafety facilities.
Under the NAHEP-CAAST project, research and training in cutting-edge
areas were imparted to students. Various lectures were delivered by
national and international experts on important topics. Students and
scientists were given opportunity to visit and work in various international
laboratories across the globe.
Mobile applications are one of the modern information and
communication tools where relevant communication reaches directly into
hands of the consumers. The institute has released seven mobile
applications aiding the livestock farmers in animal management and
health.
In this unprecedented global pandemic situation, my sincere appeal to all,
is to wear mask and maintain physical distancing until this pandemic is
over.

o Antimicrobial Resistance: Sixteen MDR
Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia isolates
(~26.3 %) of bovine diarrhoea origin exhibited the
evidence of functional efflux pumps in the drug
accumulation assay when screened for MICCIP in the
presence of EP inhibitors at fixed sub-inhibitory
concentrations [carbonyl-cyanide-m-chlorophenyl
hydrazone (CCCP) and phenylalanine arginine β-
naphthylamide (PAβN)]; this could have additionally
contributed to the fluoroquinolone-resistance among
bovine MDR isolates.
o In the division of Biochemistry, one fnr knock
out (STM:Δfnr) and one fnr codon deoptimised
mutant (STM:dfnr) strain of Salmonella typhimurium
were generated and evaluated for in vitro growth
kinetics under anaerobic conditions. The in vivo
colonization in mice, both mutant strains showed
reduced growth and colonization in mice.
o The Livestock Products Technology Division
developed a technology for chicken skin fat using
deserted poultry sleeves. A process for non-thermal
separation of feathers from skin has been developed
and separated skin is being used for production of
quality fat. The rendering regime for extraction of fat
from chicken skin and for further utilization of residual
skin as source of collagen has been optimized. The
The first recombinant vaccine intended for use against Infectious bursal
disease (IBD) for poultry. The IBD virus
infects the primary immune organ of
young chickens, the bursa of Fabricius
resulting in morbidity, mortality and
immune-suppression. Bursal damage
and depletion of B cells enhances the
susceptibility of chickens to other
infections and interferes with
vaccination against other diseases. The
vaccine completely protects the birds
and does not cause bursal damage. The
technology has been released on
26th August, 2019.

5. Sandwich ELISA kit for detection of Bluetongue virus antigen
A sandwich ELISA (sELISA) kit for
detection of bluetongue virus (BTV)
antigen was released by Secretary
DARE and DG, ICAR on 15th October
2019 at Krishi Bhavan, New Delhi.
The kit was developed under ICAR-
All India Network Program on
Bluetongue at Division of Virology,
ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research
Institute, Mukteswar. It has been
developed using polyclonal
antibodies to BTV whole virus and core protein for detection of virion
group-specific antigen in clinical samples and an infected cell culture. The
technology is being used routinely in the laboratory for BTV specific
antigen detection.
Three Animal Science Institutes (ICAR-NIHSAD, Bhopal; ICAR-NRCE, Hisar
and CADRAD, ICAR-IVRI, Izatnagar) were approved by Hon’ble Secretary
(DARE) and DG (ICAR), Ministry of
Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare,
Government of India for testing of COVID-
19 human samples in respective states.
Further, the Ministry of Forest,
Environment, and Climate Change,
Government of India also approved for
testing of Coronavirus-suspected samples
originating from animals. Laboratory at Izatnagar started testing COVID-
19 samples from human w.e.f. 16.4.2020. A team of 32 scientists, 57
technicians and 04 supporting staff are involved in the COVID-19 testing
in the BSL-3 and BSL-2 Laboratories at CADRAD. The overall activities of
the COVID-19 testing in human and animal samples at ICAR-IVRI are being
steered by Dr Raj Kumar Singh,
Director/Vice Chancellor, ICAR-IVRI,
Izatnagar. The Human samples are being
tested routinely and results are
communicated to CMO, Bareilly and State
Nodal Office as per the
recommendations. A total of 37,206
samples have been tested in three
months. Animal samples are also being tested in suspected cases and
results are provided to the concerned authorities.

Title of thesis: Effect of diets and essential
oils on metagenomics of rumen microbes
of buffaloes
Present study was conducted to
understand the dynamics of rumen
microbial community as affected by the
diet, essential oil (plant secondary
metabolites) and terminal electron
acceptor using next generation
sequencing and to correlate the obtained
data with fibre degrading ability and
metabolites produced in the rumen of
buffaloes. The study reported more than
60 genera of bacteria in rumen and
correlated the microbial abundance with
the rumen fermentation attributes in
order to study how the microbial diversity
shapes rumen fermentation of buffaloes.
Most of the CAZymes (enzymes
responsible for fibre degradation in
rumen) reported are novel and thus may
serve potential hydrolytic enzyme sources
for improving feed utilization in animals in
future. Combination of essential oil and
nitrate decreased in vitro methane
production with improved degradability
of fibre, which may be useful as a
practical strategy for methane mitigation
in future.
