What does it mean?

Directions for Community Engagement

DSD Definition:

“It’s not a substitute for the word “consultation”. Effective engagement is

underpinned by a commitment to establishing relationships and involves

building understanding, connections, capacity, trust and promoting

dialogue. Engagement is a two-way process and is respectful. It is an

integral component of policy and program development, service design

and delivery processes. Effective engagement is an ongoing process: it

sets the example of good democratic practice and it builds capacity.”

Policy expectations

• Explorers and miners must engage with stakeholders throughout mine project

life including the exploration & mine planning phases.

Transparency – Exploration and Mining

Transparent regulation and public reporting

• Exploration Approved Programs (DSD aiming for end of June 2015)

• Mining Lease Proposals, Approved Programs, Annual Compliance Reports

and Incident Reporting are available to the public (DSD is progressing to

include Assessment Reports)

• Mine operators engage with surrounding communities throughout life of mine

(including traditional owners)

An open and transparent regulatory framework is critical to stakeholder

confidence in the Exploration and Mining sector and stakeholder trust in

the regulator.

For the benefit of all South Australians leading practice community engagement

is key to meeting social, environmental and economic outcomes.
