From the imagination of P.L. Travers and complete with all the beloved songs from the Academy Award-winning Disney film, this magical stage musical tells the inspirational tale of the amazing flying nanny, who’s practically perfect in every way. With Mary and Bert leading the way, rejoice in beloved songs like “Spoonful of Sugar,” “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” and “Jolly Holiday,” as we sweep you away in this exhilarating live theatre experience for the whole family.

Based on Jules Verne’s popular novel, this is the hilarious story of Phileas Fogg’s whistle-stop journey to satisfy a wager and circumnavigate the world in eighty days. But with bandits, a damsel in distress, and transportation problems around every corner, will he be able to make the deadline? Danger, romance, and comic surprises abound as this adventure is cleverly brought to the stage with five extraordinary actors performing 39 different characters from around the world.

This theatrically charged musical comedy thriller about a publicity-crazed actor turned serial-killer is based on the best selling novel that became a renowned movie. A Village Original from 1990, this hilarious musical saw great success off-Broadway in 1996 and is returning to Village Theatre for a fresh, all-new production. With a devilish blend of humor, romance, and murder, No Way To Treat A Lady is an exciting cat-and-mouse game complete with befuddled detectives, meddling mothers, and glamorous socialites.

1931 Berlin—the capital of divine decadence, liberal thought, and cultural transformation while the shadow of the Nazis threatens to engulf all of Europe. It is the beginning of the end. Welcome to Cabaret, the iconic musical by the creators of Chicago which revolves around the seedy happenings of the Kit Kat Klub and its regulars. Winner of countless awards, this sizzling musical reminds us that “life is a cabaret, old chum, and you’ll love this Cabaret.”

Turn up the heat and get ready to feel the rhythm as this Broadway dance spectacular brings the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan to the stage. In a community where everyone knows your business, things are about to shake-up as romances bloom, dreams are challenged, and one winning lottery ticket threatens to change everything. Nominated for 12 Tony Awards, and winner of Best Musical, as well as a Pulitzer Prize nominee, In The Heights is a fun and fresh hip-hop musical set in a sizzling summer filled with music and possibilities.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURESIn the event of an emergency, please wait for an announcement for further instructions. Ushers will be available for assistance.

FOOD AND DRINK are not allowed in the Theatre.

SMOKING POLICY According to state law, smoking is NOT allowed within 25 feet of any door, nor in any part of the Theatre.

EMERGENCY NUMBERSIf you need to be reached during a performance, please leave your exact seat number and the House Manager’s number with your service or sitter. In Issaquah (425) 392-1942 x100In Everett (425) 257-6368

BABES IN ARMS Please, no babes in arms in the Theatre. In Issaquah, the Francis J. Gaudette Theatre has comfortable, sound-proof family rooms for families bringing children under four. Subscribers may exchange into the family rooms when a sitter cannot be found. When children are old enough to join the main floor audience, please instruct them in proper theatre behavior. It is helpful to familiarize them with the story and the score in advance.

ACCESSIBILITY Wheelchair seating is available. Please advise your ticket seller when purchasing tickets if you require wheelchair seating.

LISTENING SYSTEM The Theatre is equipped with a listening system for the hard of hearing. Headsets are available on a first-come first-served basis from the House Manager, and are free of charge with a valid ID.

THE SHOW MUST GO ON Whether it rains, sleets, snows or blows, only a power outage or building destruction will prevent a performance from taking place as scheduled.

PATRON CONSIDERATIONS Please arrive on time. Check your tickets for your performance time. Late arrivals are very disruptive to fellow patrons and to the artists onstage. Please give yourself plenty of time to get to the Theatre. Patrons arriving late will not be seated until a suitable pause in the performance at the House Manager’s discretion.

Please turn off all pagers, cellular phones and watch alarms before entering the Theatre. No text messaging is allowed during the performance.

No photography, video or sound recording of any performance is allowed based on royalty and union agreements.

Be aware that talking, humming and tapping feet during a performance is also disruptive to the patrons around you. Before the overture begins, please turn off playbill flashlights and unwrap cough drops. In intimate auditoriums like the Francis J. Gaudette Theatre and the Everett Performing Arts Center, even the actors can hear these seemingly small noises. Please use moderation in applying perfume, cologne or lotion, as many people are allergic to scents.

In consideration of your fellow patrons and the actors, please do not leave the performance during the curtain call.

ERIC ANKRIM* (Edmund) VT credits include: Annie, Secret Garden, Girl of My Dreams, The Gypsy King, and directing Trails. Having just returned

from NYC and the Broadway production of First Date, Eric couldn’t be more thrilled to be “home” at Village Theatre once again. Eric’s also ecstatic to be directing Village’s upcoming production of Tony-Winning In The Heights, opening in September! COME SEE IT! Endless admiration to Michele, the hardest worker on the planet, and my tutor every day.

Town Story (Village Originals), Jenny Ryerson in Rocket Science (KIDSTAGE), Bad Idea Bear

in Avenue Q (Balagan), The Music Man (The 5th Avenue), and Sylvie in Unexpected Tenderness (Harlequin). Much love to the cast and team.

HUGH HASTINGS* (Richard) has appeared in 13 previous Village Originals productions and 13 Village Theatre Mainstage produc-tions, including The

Ark, Annie, La Cage Aux Folles, Girl of My Dreams, Robin Hood, Little Women, and Stunt Girl. Hugh was most recently seen at Village as James Watt in Watt?!?. A Seattle theatre veteran, Hugh was last seen as Mr. Bumble in Oliver! at The 5th Avenue.

(Penny Pingleton), Oklahoma! (Ado Annie), Elf, Pirates of Penzance, Rent, and Titanic. Seattle Rep: Lizard Boy. Balagan: Avenue Q (Kate Monster) and Spring Awakening (Ilse). Endless love and thanks to Justin, Eric, RJ, Steve and Mom.

Les Misérables (Marius), Chasing Nicolette

(Aucassin) and Anne of Green Gables (Gilbert). Village Originals: Jesus in My Bedroom (Nick/Jesus) and Happy People (Bobby). Other favorites: Spring Awakening (Melchior), Cinderella (Prince Christopher), Parade (Young Soldier/Frankie Epps), Ragtime (Younger Brother), South Pacific (Lt. Cable), Blood Brothers (Micky). TV: Veep. www.MatthewKacergis.com

TATUM LUDLAM (Sweetie Alternate) is overjoyed to return to Village Theatre in such a new and innovative production! Past

credits: Fiddler on the Roof (Mainstage), Small Town Story, The Giver (Village Originals), Legally Blonde (Elle), Hairspray (Penny) (KIDSTAGE), Spring Awakening, Les Misérables (Balagan Theatre). Tatum thanks M&D, Ethan, Eliza, Ann, David, Eric, Joey, and KGriff!

(Minister), Stunt Girl, and Sound of Music (Max). Other recent work includes Little Women (Mr. Laurence) at ArtsWest, I Love You, You’re Perfect... at SMT as well as directing Gypsy at SMT and Plaid Tidings at ArtsWest. Celebrate the Arts!

Author’s NotesAll the main characters in The Tutor sing this lyric in the second act, and it’s what we’ve been singing ourselves as our show has grown up over the past 12 years, thanks in no small part to Village Theatre! What started as a fistful of songs written at the Eugene O’Neill Music Theatre Conference in 2001 went on to receive wonderful support from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in the form of three Richard Rodgers Awards, and ended up crossing the desk of Robb Hunt, who became our fearless champion. He invited us to come to Issaquah for a Village Originals presentation in 2004 and a developmental production the following year, and this beautiful full production truly “Feels Like Home” (to quote another song).

Shows are like people – they need support, love, and the freedom to be who and what they want to be. Many thanks to director David Ira Goldstein, who brings his own perennially youthful sense of wonder to this production, and to this gifted cast of Village Theatre favor-ites. Our two remarkable Sweeties offer proof that life and fiction intersect in unexpected ways, as they spent their scant downtime in rehearsals doing homework and prepping for the SATs themselves. (Katie and Tatum are both alums of the Village Theatre’s KIDSTAGE program—talk about a walking advertisement!

And how wonderful that the Village Theatre’s original tutor, the fresh-from-Broadway Eric

Ankrim, has also “grown up” with the show. Last time he played the role of Edmund he was, well, younger. Now he’s a Broadway veteran, a hus-band, and a father of three. We are thrilled and grateful to have him on board once more.

Growing up is a life’s work. Wide-eyed toddlers turn into know-it-all fifth graders. Sassy teens become nervous college first-years. Newlyweds morph into middle-aged parents who wonder how it could possibly be time to send their “baby” off to college. Through it all, love and art endure. Thank you for spending this time with us here at Village Theatre. We hope you enjoy The Tutor.

Maryrose Wood and Andrew Gerle

Who’s Who

Director’s NotesOn the first day of rehearsal for The Tutor, I gathered the company into a circle and made a simple request, “Tell us about the most important teacher or mentor you have had in your life.”

Usually when you gather a group of artists together for the very first time, there is a little reluctance to share personal memories. Ice must be broken, reticence must be breached, and time must be shared before some of us are able to share our personal histories. But this simple question elicited an immediate and enthusiastic response. We heard about favorite teachers, beloved friends and, most touchingly, we often heard about parents— some with us still and some who have left us— as transforming mentors.

Everyone, it seems, no matter how old or young, has a story they are eager to share about someone in their life who has provided guidance, inspiration, and learning.

The Tutor is a treasure box of delightful characters and situations seasoned with honest wisdom about the way each of us approaches our journey through life. Where we find inspiration; how we come to understand the humility it takes to simply, really, truly listen. In their own time, and each in a distinct way, Edmund, Sweetie, Esther, and Richard all learn lessons about how to take joy in the journey as well as the destination.

The Tutor is the most precious of artistic creations: a truly original musical comedy. The wit and craft of Maryrose Wood and Andrew Gerle are always on display, but so are simple enduring lessons—and truth. “Give yourself a little more time,” is what Maryrose and Andrew ask of us. Such simple advice, but also such a 24/7 challenge!

Face your journey with courage, determination, and intelligence, The Tutor asks us. Take guidance and wisdom wherever you find it. It may come from a private $200 an hour tutor, it may come from a long-time spouse, and it may even come from a Vegan in upstate New York. But give it a little time, and a lesson may become a life.

INTRODUCING VILLAGE THEATRE’S

FUNNY GIRL,

Sarah Rose Davis

F anny Brice was one of the most celebrated entertainers of her time, gracing the stage as a comedienne and Vaudeville star from 1908-1951. Her character was later embraced by the

one and only Barbara Streisand, who played Fanny in the Broadway premiere of Funny Girl in 1964. Suffice to say, this is not a role for the faint of heart, but we think we’ve found a girl who’s up to the challenge.

Sarah Rose Davis is a local performer who has been building up to this role through her work at several theatres across Seattle, including our own production of Trails last year. Originally from Bellevue and a graduate of Newport High School, she was a Village Theatre KIDSTAGE kid for most of her youth. She still remembers the ah-ha moment she had at the age of 13, when theatre became her official career path. After that point, Sarah went on to perform in 15 different KIDSTAGE productions before she got her B.F.A in Musical Theatre from the prestigious Boston Conservatory of Music.

We’re sure Sarah is going to make a splash with her performance in Funny Girl and can’t wait for our audiences to enjoy her on stage. “We had Sarah in mind for the role from the beginning,” says Director Steve Tomkins, “but it wasn’t until she blew her audition out of the water that we really knew: this is our girl.”

Funny Girl will be on stage in Issaquah from May 15-July 6 and in Everett from July 11-August 3. For tickets and information, visit VillageTheatre.org.

Eric Ankrim and Katie Griffith are familiar faces here at Village Theatre. Eric, having previously played Edmund at the 2004 Festival of New Musicals and during the 2005 Development Production Presentation of the show, was recently seen on our stage in The Gypsy King and directed Trails last Season. A KIDSTAGE all-star, Katie has been in numerous KIDSTAGE productions and was in Meet Me In St. Louis on Mainstage in 2009. We sat down with both of them to talk about their characters and the magic of developing a new musical.

In what ways do you think each other are like your characters?

KATIE When it comes to wit, humor, and passion for what they do, Eric and Edmund both are off the charts. The two of them are lovable nerds at heart. However, Edmund has an arrogance about him at the start of the show that Eric most definitely does not. Eric is a very humble guy.

ERIC Katie is not that much like Sweetie. At the beginning of the play, Sweetie believes that she doesn’t really have anyone to rely on (other than her snake, Frodo), and that her parents don’t really understand her. Katie has an incredible relationship to her parents, and is approachable, warm, and fun to be around. Sweetie is pretty rough around the edges. Katie is not (sorry Katie).

KATIE, Sweetie has a lot of pressure put on her to get into college: are you feeling that same pressure in high school?

Absolutely! It’s weird. I always thought of college as some faraway, life-changing event that I wouldn’t have to think about for forever. And then all of the sudden, it’s junior year and the pressure is on. Just like Sweetie, being 16 means SAT scores will now actually count for something, classes get harder, and you have to start thinking about how you’re going to be an actual person in the real world.

ERIC, a lot of actors and artists seem to work two jobs, just like Edmund. What are some other jobs alongside acting you’ve had over the past few years?

I’ve been pretty blessed to not have to work jobs outside of the creative arts. I’ve been directing a lot during the last couple years, including Trails here at Village last year. Directing shows gives me a completely different perspective about what goes into making these musicals happen. I think (hopefully) it makes me a better actor as well.

KATIE, how excited are you to return to Mainstage? Can you talk about how this experience compares to your time with KIDSTAGE?

It is so exciting to work alongside this small-but-mighty cast and team in The Tutor. Watching everyone work and play is really inspiring and every day I learn so much. Growing up a KIDSTAGE kid, I’ve had the opportunity to get a taste of Mainstage at an early age. What is so apparent in both KIDSTAGE and Mainstage is everyone is really proud to be there. There is a ton of mutual respect for others and a passion for putting together great pieces of art in both places. The KIDSTAGE program not only is so conveniently connected to Mainstage, but it has helped prepare me as an artist and a person to get here. KIDSTAGE holds a very special place in my heart.

ERIC, what has changed (for you and Edmund) from the first reading of The Tutor you did in 2004 until now?

Well, I have gotten married and become a father of three wonderful little kids; pretty different than being a single actor. Being a husband and a father teaches you how to prioritize and manage your time as efficiently

Eric Ankrim as Edmund in the Development Production Presentation of The Tutor. 2005, Credit: Dan Achatz

A Q&A With Eric Ankrim and Katie Griffith

as possible. As far as Edmund goes, I think I still understand him to be the same character on paper, but I am able to bring more life experience to my portrayal. I think I have also learned how to calm down and really listen on stage more than I did when I was 25 years old. With a character as high-energy as Edmund, that’s really important.

What is the most exciting thing about working on a new musical, and what do you hope audiences take away from the show?

KATIE Ah! What’s not to love? One of my favorite things about this new musical process has been working with the writers. When they come to rehearsals, the room is bustling and changes are being made and I love to watch them light up as their show comes to life. After seeing the show, I hope audiences take away the understanding that everyone, no matter what age or ambition, is just trying to grow up. And it can be hard, but it’s a lot better when you have people who love you by your side to help you through.

ERIC Village Theatre puts an emphasis on original musicals that is pretty much unrivaled in this region and possibly the country. The fact that the Village audience gets to see a fully produced original musical every season is just unbelievable to me; these types of originals produced at this scale is truly a unique opportunity for artists to work on and for patrons to witness. I am blessed to be a part of it.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

ERIC We are all Tutors and we are all Students. By the end of the show Edmund realizes that he has things to learn, and that everyone around him is a potential source of instruction. When we realize that we can all teach each other every day, we begin to truly listen, and engage. That type of human interaction is what life is all about, and something we can all use a bit more of. I hope that lesson resonates with every audience that gets to watch this journey. Go Theatre!

For the past three years, United Airlines has been a committed partner of Village

Theatre. Thanks in large part to United’s generous support, Village Theatre has been able to spread its wings and attract nationally-recognized performers, designers, and directors to our stages. Without the support of United Airlines, Village Theatre’s reach and impact would be severely limited. United Airlines and Village Theatre have a unique partnership and mission—both are able to transport us to exotic, magical destinations through the excitement of travel and the power of live theatre. Village Theatre sincerely appreciates the invaluable contributions we have received from United Airlines.

Founded in 1987, by veteran restaurateur, Diane Symms, Lombardi’s was launched in the Seattle neighborhood of

Ballard, with a vision of serving memorable, full flavored, yet simple and affordable Italian food. The name “Lombardi’s” was chosen because “Lombardy” is a region in northern Italy and to honor “papa Lombardi,” the grandfather of the original Chef/Partner. Lombardi’s is a family owned/local business with Diane’s daughter, Kerri Lonergan-Dreke, leading the company into the second generation.

In 1998, Lombardi’s extended the brand into Snohomish County, with its restaurant at the spectacular Everett Marina. In the Fall of 2012, Lombardi’s expanded into the Mill Creek/Bothell community. With change ever constant, Lombardi’s said goodbye to Ballard in 2010, and Issaquah in 2013.

Giving back to the communities in which we do business is a core value. We are honored to be a corporate sponsor of Village Theatre and greatly appreciate the excellent and affordable entertainment options Village Theatre brings to the residents of Snohomish County!

Village Theatre is one of only a few professional theatre companies throughout the country that commissions and develops new musicals. It is because of our loyal Village Originals members we are able to continue building on our commitment of fostering new musicals. Tonight’s production of The Tutor is one of 130 musicals developed during our 14 year commitment to this indigenous American art form. Village Theatre Staff

ROBB HUNT (Executive Producer) helped found Village Theatre in 1979 and has been involved as producer for the theatre ever since. Robb was an avid performer for

many years with experience as a principal actor and dancer in several Puget Sound theatre companies. With a background in business, Robb was a strong hand as a consultant in the field of Arts Management; several of his clients included The 5th Avenue, the Metropolitan Museum, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Seattle Symphony, The Museum of Flight, The Carnegie, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Robb is dedicated to commissioning and developing musicals and has been the driving force in the inclusion of new musicals in Village Theatre programming. He has collaborated on the creation of productions such as Eleanor, Next To Normal, The Ark, and Making Tracks. Village Theatre has become an active member of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre and Robb has served on its New Works committee and on the Board of Directors. He has also served as a peer panelist and evaluator for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

STEVE TOMKINS (Artistic Director) began his active professional arts career in Seattle in 1972, as a member of The Empty Space’s acting company. He has been the artistic director

at Village Theatre for the past 20 years. Prior to his time here, he was the artistic director at Civic Light Opera for several years. As a director and choreographer, Steve’s regional work has been seen at The Arkansas Repertory Theatre, The Arizona Theatre Company, Seattle Repertory Theatre, ACT, and TAG. For seven years, Steve staged and choreographed production shows with Greg Thompson Productions. He has directed and choreographed numerous productions at Village Theatre including: Grease, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Joseph…, The Ark, Annie, West Side Story, Peter Pan, La Cage Aux Folles, Oklahoma!, Damn Yankees, How to Succeed…, South Pacific, Play It By Heart, The Music Man, CATS, Hello, Dolly!, EVITA, Bye Bye Birdie, …Jersey, The King and I, AIDA, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Stunt Girl, Chasing Nicolette, Meet Me in St. Louis, 42nd Street, Anne of Green Gables, Iron Curtain, Annie Get Your Gun, The Producers, Big River, Chicago, and Les Misérables.

20 VILLAGE THEATRE

Page 21: Directed By David Ira Goldstein Choreographed By Jessica Low …encoreartsseattle.com/sites/default/files/programs/the... ·  · 2015-11-06Directed By David Ira Goldstein Choreographed

Each year, Village Theatre’s Annual Fund supports our Mainstage productions, the new works program Village Originals, and our Youth Education and Outreach programming which includes KIDSTAGE classes, camps, and productions, and Pied Piper, annually reaching over 63,000 students, schools, and families throughout the Puget Sound. There are many ways that you can support our efforts to ensure that present and future audiences experi-ence the musical excitement and artistic excellence of Village Theatre.

INDIVIDUAL GIVING: It is through donations that we are able to achieve the level of excellence that you have come to expect. By donating to our Annual Fund, you will play a part in every aspect of Village Theatre, from the shows we produce, to the performers, sets, and costumes. You will also receive unique benefits to enhance your musical theatre experience.

CORPORATE GIVING: Artistic excellence, unique entertainment, fiscal responsibility—all attributes of Village Theatre. By joining our team of corporate partners, your business will receive prominent recog-nition, promotional opportunities, and entertainment benefits that demonstrate your leadership. Corporate sponsorships take several forms with opportunities at many levels. These include the sponsorship of performances and performance-related activities, support for education and outreach programs, and underwriting of special events

SPECIAL EVENTS: How to put the fun in fundraising. Village Theatre has a full calendar of events and intimate donor gatherings. Please save the dates: Sing It Forward to benefit our Youth Education Program and Scholarships was held on Saturday, Oct. 19 at First Stage in Issaquah and was held on February 21-22, 2014 at Second Stage in Everett. On The Town, our annual black-tie gala auction, takes place on Saturday, May 17, 2014.

VILLAGE ORIGINALS MEMBERSHIP: As a Village Originals member, you will enjoy a dozen new musi-cals every year. Village Originals Members are the ONLY people guaranteed admission to the Festival. Your opinions matter as you are the “Beta Tester” for every new musical we work on. “Research and Development” has never been this much fun — fascinating and funny, melodic and moving, and endlessly surprising.

PLANNED GIVING: When considering a planned gift, start by asking how you want to benefit Village Theatre and how you’d like to benefit yourself and others. While a planned gift can often be relatively simple to arrange, you should always seek the advice and guidance of your attorney, accountant, or other appropriate advisor.
