What is a direct object

• Tells who or what is receiving the action of the subject.• The direct object always comes in the predicate after

the action verb.

• Not all sentences can have a direct object:– Jonas and Lilly both nodded sympathetically as well.– They danced beautifully.

• That cat ate food.• The teacher graded papers.• The mouse clicked the screen• The machine cooled the drinks• The funny dog ate garbage.• The slow microwave cooked food.

A Trick to Identifying Direct Object

Simple direct object vs. direct object

• Simple direct object is noun that conveys what is receiving the action of the sentence.

• The whole direct object is all of the words that show what is receiving the action:

• Example: – They began a simple game of catch.– Simple d.o. game– Full d.o. simple game of catch.

Write the subject, predicate and direct object.

• He hung his head, trembled a great deal and was still completely stunned.

• Under the strokes of her tongue, which softly touched him here and there, he drew himself together and stood still.

He heard only the soft licking against his coat that washed him and warmed him and kissed him.

• The thick foliage stroked his flanks softly and bent supplely aside.
