Accreditation status of the Diploma in Event Management:

The Diploma in Event Management is registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) of the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), qualification ID 80526.

Admission requirements for the Diploma in Event Management:

• NSC or equivalent with a minimum 30-39% or better in the language of learning (English) • Minimum of 40-49% or better in four (4) 20 credit bearing subjects (excluding LO) OR• Relevant Higher Certificate on NQF level 5

International student requirements:

International students must ensure that:• they have an equivalent qualification;• the equivalent qualification is recognised by SAQA; and that• they have a valid study VISA issued in the name of Prestige Academy that covers the duration of their

studies.

Diploma in Event Management | Faculty of Commerce and Management

The Student initially applies with Prestige Academy to study towards a specific qualification. Prestige Academy is currently in the process of a business transfer to become part of STADIO. This will result in the Student obtaining a STADIO qualification when the programme has been completed successfully.

ABOUT THIS PROGRAMMEThis is a qualification in its own right and can be classified as career or industry orientated. The qualification is aligned with the requirements for registration of qualifications specified in the NQF/HEQF.

The programme was designed to equip candidates with a sound knowledge base, theory and methodologies of learning in preparation for entry into the events industry. Since the qualification can be categorised as career-ori-entated the programme also involves the opportunity to master the ability to apply knowledge within workplace context, such as the planning, coordinating and staging of a variety of events for customers.

The ideal candidate can be described as a student with an NSC qualification, or equivalent who wishes to acquire a formal qualification to enter the events industry.

Once qualified the graduate will be able to find employment as a professional event manager or coordinator at any organisation or company, or be employed by a company specialising in events such as sporting events, commercial events, private events, adventure (special tourism) events, etc. For those who do not prefer the traditional em-ployment route, they will have adequate knowledge and skills to offer such services through a personal business venture. They may even become an events researcher.

The duration of the programme is three years of full-time study. The programme has clearly stipulated admission requirements, entry and exit points as well as standards of competence based on performance-based outcomes and associated assessment criteria.

MODULE DESCRIPTION

Fundamentals of Business Communication

This moduled equips students with the necessary knowledge and skills to perform effectively and understand and apply key concepts in effective verbal and non-verbal communication concepts within the business work environment. In particular, attention is paid to the nature and dimensions of verbal and non-verbal communication, internal and external communication within organisational structures, as well as small group communication dynamics. Listening behaviour is explored within the various communicative contexts. Effective presentation skills within a business environment context are also highlighted. Additionally, the syllabus explores developing an understanding of the purpose of presentations within a business environ-ment context, the different modes of communication, techniques for ensuring a dynamic presentation, proper planning of a presentation, and using suitable presentation media.

Event Management 1Practise, Planning & Staging

Section A of this module will equip students with knowledge and skills on managing private events and wedding planning. The focus is on principles and procedures regarding actual wedding planning, covering aspects such as wedding programming, contingency plans, the key role players, the wedding ceremony, activities before and after the ceremony, and legal matters.

Section B of this module will equip students with knowledge of event planning and staging to establish a platform for event management practice. Specific attention is paid to the emergence and dynamics of the event industry, local and global trends, the event life cycle, principles and processes of event planning, and aspects of event programming including the vital requirements as well as monitoring and evaluation of the event programme.

Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship

This module introduces students to the fundamental principles that underpin entrepreneurship and creates a platform for further studies in this field. Students will explore the fundamental concepts used in entrepreneurship and the fundamental principles that define entrepreneurs in South Africa. Students will learn the importance of seizing opportunities at the right time and the role of the business plan in successfully establishing a new business venture.

YEAR 1

Information Administration Systems

This is a generic module. Due to the trend of computing many business tasks (administration, accounting, information systems, communication, marketing, etc.) in all fields of work, it is required that all employees today must have a basic level of computer literacy, being competent in the use of software packages such as MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well as in utilising e-mail and the internet. Added to this, basic computer literacy is a prerequisite for any learning program in the ICT field.

This module will equip students with knowledge and skills in utilising the computer for common workplace tasks such as accessing information sources via internet, word processing, sending and receiving e-mail, preparing PowerPoint presentations, and compiling a budget. The module provides students the opportunity to master these software packages through hands-on experience, and apply their knowledge in various assignments. Be able to collect, organise and evaluate information in a concise way using effective communication skills.

Introduction to Tourism & Event Industry Section A: Tourism Context

This module explores the global environment within which event management operate within the travel and tourism industry. In particular, it examines the historical evolution of tourism, the current structure of the tourism industry, the external influences on tourism and the impact tourism has on host communities and the environment. Students will also undertake an investigation of international and national policies and assess their influence on the tourism industry. The effects of political change on the industry’s operation will also be examined.

Section B: Tourism Destinations

The second part introduces students to the location of tourist destinations, the cultural, social and physical features of those destinations and the issues and trends that affect their popularity, as part of the essential selling skills and knowledge needed by managers within the travel and tourism industry. Through analysing visitor numbers, statistics and other relevant data, students should be more aware of past issues affecting tourism, enabling them to appreciate the impact they can have on a destination and its continued popularity.

YEAR 2Business Management in Context

This module builds on Entrepreneurship (FE12) in the 1st year of studies. This module introduces the student to the business world and key processes for effective business management. In particular, attention is paid to the underpinning theory and concepts of business management, management principles, related processes, the functional areas of management, the different functions of an organisation and contemporary management issues such as corporate social responsibility and productivity.

Event Management Event Safety & Risk Management/Event Impact Assessment

Section A of this module will equip the students with knowledge and skills related to the event management process and EMBOK in commercial events. As the EMBOK model is the backbone of event management, this concept offers the fundamental knowledge of managing commercial events. Supplementary to this, students will be introduced to the various types of commercial events including sport tourism events, exhibitions and trade shows, meetings, corporate events, and political events.

Section B of this module will equip students with knowledge of the functional area management of commercial events. Considering that all commercial events utilise these functional areas at various scales, the functional areas of each commercial event introduced in Section A will be discussed. Some of these functional areas include, but are not limited to sponsorship management, logistics management, environment design, stakeholder management, and compliance management.

Section C of this module will equip students with knowledge pertaining to the significance of event evaluation and event impact assessments. Sustainable event planning is crucial to the future of events. Students will discuss the environments commercial events impact, explore the principles of event impact assessment, and the knowledge management related to event assessment.

Event Marketing

This module will equip students with knowledge of event marketing. Specific aspects that receive attention include the three E’s of event marketing; marketing activities of the event manager; the 7 P’s of event marketing mix; factors to consider in event marketing, marketing techniques and strategies as well as customer care and media relations.

Entrepreneurship Ventures & Venturing

The aim of this module is to prepare candidates that prefer the route of potential owners of a new business venture. This module will thus equip the candidate with an in-depth understanding of requirements to ensure success in establishing and running a new business. It includes contemporary knowledge on how to manage the new venture effectively and profession-ally with specific reference to resource requirements, legal aspects, choosing a favourable location for the business, building and maintaining networks and support structures in order to be successful. The candidate will gain insight into alternative routes to entrepreneurship, including the concept of family businesses, franchising and buying an existing business.

Public Relations in Context

This module will equip students with knowledge and skills concerning public relations. Specific aspects that receive attention include key concepts and principles of public relations, requirements for the PR practitioner and public relations within an event management context, the public relations process, social skills and protocols in public relations, interpersonal relation-ships, corporate image and corporate identity, public relations issues and crisis management, corporate and social invest-ment, as well as media relations.

YEAR 3Digital Marketing

The aim of this module is to enable students to understand the digital marketing systems. It covers vital issues in digital marketing such as the digital marketing landscape, understanding the nature of digital natives and immigrants, as well as the transformation of marketing by digital platforms through the use of social media in the marketing environment. It further looks into the current legal practices in the digital world that can affect a digital marketer’s strategies.

Event Management 3Corporate Event Management; Adventure Programme Design/Team

Section A will cultivate a superior understanding of adventure program design and teambuilding facilitation and techniques. It commences with the philosophy of adventure programming, which includes the core principles of success and how these should be translated into the planning of an adventure experience.

Section B will develop a better understanding of teambuilding through adventure programs and activities. Students, there-fore will be required to demonstrate theoretical knowledge as well as the ability to apply knowledge in real life situations.

Hospitality

This module explores the diversity of the hospitality sector as part of the travel and tourism industry. Students will develop knowledge and an understanding of the impact of an integrated approach on the sector, and the possible future implications for the tourism industry.

Branding and Promotion

This module deals with brand management. Branding is gaining more attention in business marketing and is regarded to be one of the most important aspects when it comes to successfully managing a product/service within today’s competitive marketplace. The student will develop an understanding of why brands are so important and what they represent to consum-ers. It will also examine how firms should manage these valuable assets. The specific aspects explored in this module include brands and brand equity, customer-based equity, brand elements and brand identity, the system of brand management, new products and brand extensions, as well as corporate branding.

Work-based Learning

Work-based Learning is an educational strategy that enables students to do real-life work and the experience the practicalities thereof. The students can apply academic and vocational skills (gained during their studies) that will develop their employability. At this institution the diploma and advanced certificate programmes on NQF level 6 will do work-based learning. It will focus on the practical implementation of skills acquired during the learning process at the institution. It will not be expected of these students to do analysis of business plans, but rather to receive such a plan and implement it according to the company policies and procedures. The student will be using the knowledge and skills gained during the learning period at the institution to fulfil these tasks.
