Two Unique Programs Aimed at Keeping our Kids Safe to be Held in November In its continuing efforts to protect our children, the diocesan Office of Safe Environments will have two special and interesting programs in November, both aimed at educating those who work or volunteer in our parishes and schools. The second program will include a two-time Olympian and Collegiate Coach as the guest speaker. The first program called “It’s All About the Kids (Big and Small) – Keeping Them Safe” is a Training Program for Catechists and Teachers, and will be held Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at St. Peter Church in Jupiter. At this meeting, we will have some new materials available to be used in the annual Safe Environment Program for the Children and Youth in our diocese. The materials are being provided by our new partners in safety, The Center for Missing and Exploited Children, who will be there with kits both in English and Spanish for every parish and school. One of our own educators, who is familiar with the materials, will be there to give us a training session and show us how she has been using the materials both in the parish and in the school. We’d love to have representation from every parish and school. If you bring someone with you, your name will go into a raffle. Our second program called “Keeping Kids Safe in our Sports Programs – Hearing it from a Champion” will be held Saturday, Nov. 16, from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach. Our guest will be Jenny Keim Johansen, a two-time U.S. Olympian and veteran collegiate diving coach, who was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame at the University of Miami in 2010. All Athletic Directors, Coaches, Volunteer Coaches, Parent Volunteers and anyone interested is invited to this special presentation about Safe Practices with regard to guidelines, protection policies, screening and boundary issues. This is a very timely topic being discussed today in youth ministry and youth sports. This event is open to the public. More information will be coming to your parishes and schools directly. Support Our Military Men, Women & Families in November The Archdiocese for the Military Services (AMS) brings the sacraments, faith formation and other ministries to the 1.5 million Catholics currently serving in the armed forces, their families, students at military academies, and veterans in VA Medical Centers. The AMS has no territorial borders, nor do they have parishes or weekly collections to fund their mission. The U.S. Bishops recently pledged to give financial support to the AMS by having a special collection in every diocese every three years for this purpose. Our first such collection will be taken on the weekend of November 23 and 24, 2013. Your financial contribution to the AMS is one way to ensure that our military personnel continue to have the spiritual support they need. And, of course, your prayers for our brothers and sisters in the military and those who provide their support are critical as well. For more information about the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, please go to www.milarch.org

Diocese Releases Strategic Vision for our Catholic Schools The diocesan Office of Catholic Schools is pleased to announce the publication of the Strategic Vision 2020: Charting a Course for Excellence, which outlines a detailed vision for the Catholic schools in the diocese through the year 2020. This past year, a Leadership Summit on Catholic Schools was convened, bringing together pastors, principals, parents, parishioners, business and civic leaders, as well as educators from universities and public schools. A direct result of the summit is Strategic Vision 2020

which will help our schools to shine in four key areas: Mission and Catholic Identity; Academic Excellence; Governance and Leadership; and Operational Vitality.

The Presbyteral Council, Principals and School Pastors received copies of this plan in September and now you may review it on the diocesan website at www.diocesepb.org/strategicvision or request a copy by calling 561-775-9547. The next step in the planning process will be to develop the timeline within which we will accomplish these goals and objectives. We hope you will take a moment to view the vision we created together to propel our Catholic schools into the next decade.

Month’s Mind Requiem Mass at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery

On the second Saturday of each month Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery celebrates the Month’s Mind Requiem Mass. This Mass takes place 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. in the cemetery’s outdoor chapel. Prayers during this Requiem Mass are offered for those who have been laid to rest during the previous month, all of the deceased at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery, and all of the holy souls in purgatory. All of the faithful are welcome and encouraged to attend. The tradition of the Month’s Mind Requiem dates back to the fifteenth century as a feast of prayerful remembrance for departed souls on or about the thirtieth day of their passing. Though it is still common in Ireland and England, few parishes in the United States continue the custom today. Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery is located exactly 1-mile west of State Road 7 (US-441) and 3-miles west of the Florida Turnpike at 10941 Southern Boulevard, in Royal Palm Beach. For additional information, please feel free to contact us at: (561) 793-0711.

No One Buried Alone Ministry at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery As Christians, we believe the body is sacred and as the temple of the Holy Spirit here on Earth, deserves repose in a consecrated dwelling as we await the coming of our Lord Jesus and the resurrection of our bodies. Guided by this truth, Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery in Royal Palm Beach accepts the remains of those who have no family or friends to bury them…the loveless, the homeless, and the abandoned stillborns who possess inherent dignity because they are made in the image of God. Please consider volunteering to attend these charitable services which occur periodically throughout the year. Prayer to Avert Hurricanes

The Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito is asking all parishes and schools in the diocese to join him in a united prayer effort in thanksgiving for the past several calm hurricane seasons and for our protection from devastating storms in the 2013 season. Below is a prayer to avert storms that you and your families can use throughout the hurricane season. Thank you for your support of our prayer effort to ask God to keep us safe from hurricanes in this season. (SUGGESTED PRAYER FOR PROTECTION FROM STORMS)

God our Father, Creator of the Universe and Lord over all creation, we humbly stand before you as your children in thanksgiving for your loving care and protection. We ask that you keep us safe from all hurricanes which may threaten us in the coming seasons. Protect us from all fear and anxiety of storms and give us an ardent trust and hope in Your love and mercy. You alone have the power to command the sea, the wind and the rain. You alone bring peace, calm, and safety. Father, we thank you in advance, for you are our only Refuge. We ask this through Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Mary, Queen of the Apostles, and Patroness of our Diocese, pray for us.

Word of Life Bulletin Briefs November 2013 “Show, by your life, that it is worth giving your time and talents in order to attain high ideals, it is worth recognizing the dignity of each human person, and it is worth taking risks for Christ and his Gospel. ~ Pope Francis, World Youth Day Farewell Ceremony at Galeão/Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport, Rio de Janeiro, July 28, 2013

“I would now like to say a special word to women who have had an abortion. . . The wound in your heart may not yet have healed. Certainly what happened was and remains terribly wrong. But do not give in to discouragement and do not lose hope. Try rather to understand what happened and face it honestly. If you have not already done so, give yourselves over with humility and trust to repentance. The Father of mercies is ready to give you his forgiveness and his peace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.”

~ Pope John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life) no. 99, March 25, 1995 “There is nothing more powerful than prayer and fasting in the battle for true justice in our country. It is the hope of the bishops that these efforts will encourage real solidarity among all people who are standing for the precious gifts of life, marriage and religious liberty.”

~ Bishop Michael J. Sheridan, Bishop of Colorado Springs, “The Bishop’s Voice: A Battle for True Justice”, The Colorado Catholic Herald, January 18, 2013

“No accidents, these lives of ours, created by a loving God with magnificent precision. The care and intricacy with which each human life is created — or as Isaiah and the psalmist tell it, knitted together in our mothers’ wombs — are God’s loving work. These basic spiritual truths — these basic human truths — bring the tragedy of abortion into sharp relief. To snuff out any life desired, created, loved and given a purpose by God is an unspeakable tragedy.”

~ Archbishop J. Peter Sartain, Archbishop of Seattle, “We are to be ‘people of life, people for life,’” The Catholic Northwest Progress, January 24, 2013

A Witness to Life In April of 1962, St. Gianna Beretta Molla, a young Italian wife and mother, placed the life of her unborn child ahead of her own. Despite her medical condition and the advice to abort her fourth child, she chose to remain pregnant. When doctors had to perform surgery to remove a uterine tumor, she told them, “If you must decide between me and the child, do not hesitate: choose the child - I insist on it.” Months after the successful surgery, St. Gianna gave birth to a healthy girl, but died from complications seven days later.

~ Obispo Michael J. Sheridan, obispo de Colorado Springs, “The Bishop’s Voice: A Battle for True Justice”, The Colorado Catholic Herald, 18 de enero de 2013

“No son accidentes, estas vidas nuestras, creadas por un Dios amoroso con una precisión magnífica. El cuidado y la complejidad con los cuales se crea cada vida humana, –como lo dicen Isaías y el Salmista, me tejiste en el seno de mi madre– son la obra amorosa de Dios. Estas verdades espirituales básicas –estas verdades humanas básicas– ponen en gran relieve la tragedia del aborto. Apagar cualquier vida que Dios deseó, creó, amó y dio sentido es una tragedia tremenda”.

~ Arzobispo J. Peter Sartain, arzobispo de Seattle, “We are to be ‘people of life, people for life,’” The Catholic Northwest Progress, 24 de enero de 2013
