February 18, 2018 (by which we help the needy in our community). Practice tithing (Give 5% of your gross income to the

church collection and 5% to your favorite charity). Almsgiving is not just money, food and clothing, but

also time. So, consider visiting the sick in a hospi-tal or nursing home. Visit that relative/friend you haven’t seen in forever.

POPE FRANCIS: “BE COURAGEOUS, GO TO CON-

FESSION”

On February 19th, 2014, Pope Francis, spoke of . . . (wait for it) . . . of going to confession!!! (See, it’s not just your zealous Parish Priest speaking about the necessity of confession!) The Holy Father said, and I quote: "Everyone [should ask] himself: ‘When was the last time I went to confession?’ And if it has been a long time, don’t lose another day! Go, the Priest will be good. And Jesus, (will be) there, and Jesus is better than the Priests - Jesus receives you. He will receive you with so much love! Be courageous, and go to confession,” “Someone [may] say, ‘I confess my sins only to God.’ Yes, you can say to God, ‘forgive me,’ and say your sins [to God]. But our sins are also against our brothers, against the Church. This is why it is necessary to ask forgiveness of the Church and of our brothers, in the person of the priest. . . forgiveness is not something we can give ourselves.” Pope Francis went on to recognize that many people feel ashamed at the idea of confessing their sins to a Priest and might say, “but Father, I am embarrassed!” The Holy Father says: “Even embarrassment is good. It’s healthy to have a bit of shame . . . it does us good, because it makes us more humble . . . Don’t be afraid of confession . . . . When someone is in line for confes-sion he feels all these things - even shame - but then, when he finishes confessing [all his sins], he leaves (feeling) free, great, beautiful, forgiven, clean, happy.”

BE COURAGEOUS; GO TO CONFESSION . . . BE-FORE, DURING, AFTER LENT

Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception SUGGESTIONS FOR A FRUITFUL

LENT

During Lent, we unite ourselves with Our Lord, who fasted and prayed for 40 days in the des-sert. By doing works of penance, Our Lord undid the sins of our first parents, Adam and Eve, and gave us the power to conquer Satan. We conquer Satan’s 3 most common temptations (lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, pride of life) through the 3 Lenten disciplines given by Our Lord in the Gospel for Ash Wednesday (Mt. 6:1-6,16-18). FASTING & ABSTINENCE – combat the lust of the flesh (love for pleasure)

Turn off the “Satanic tabernacle” (words of Blessed Mother Teresa referring to the TV). In-stead, do some spiritual reading – The Case for Jesus (Brant Pitre), Imitation of Christ (Thomas a’ Kempis), Introduction to the Devout Life (St. Fran-cis de Sales).

Avoid the Internet; instead, read the Bible each day (Try Gospel of Mark).

Avoid social media; instead, join our Lenten study on the True Reformers (every Thursday at 6 pm).

Fast on all Fridays of Lent (Fasting only kills sin). In addition to abstaining from meat on the Fridays

of Lent, give up meat on another day of the week (Wednesday).

Cancel the Good Friday crawfish boil and/or fish fry you were planning; or, figure out how you’re going to convince your buddy to cancel his. Good Friday is a mandatory day of fasting and abstinence! As such, it’s not a day of diver-sion. Why re-crucify Our Lord by partying on Good Friday!? Wasn’t once more than enough?

PRAYER – combats the pride of life (disordered self-love)

Make frequent visits to the Blessed Sacrament (The Cathedral church will be open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Satur-day from 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM and Sunday from 7:00 AM to 6:30 PM).

Come to Holy Mass one more time each week; or come to Holy Mass each day of Lent.

Participate in our Holy Hour of Reparation every Thursday evening from 11:00 PM to 12 Midnight.

Participate in Eucharistic Adoration every Friday from 12:35 to 5:30 PM.

Pray the Stations of the Cross (Join us at the Ca-thedral every Friday at 11:30 AM and 5:30 PM).

Pray the Rosary each day; or pray the Family Rosary (The family that prays together stays to-gether).

ALMSGIVING – combats the lust of the eyes (love for possessions)

Participate in our Fruitful Sunday (Bring canned fruits to church and we will donate it to Catholic Charities).

Make a donation to our Cathedral Outreach Pro-

Genesis tells the story of Noah and of God’s covenant not only with all people, but with all of nature. Never will the cleansing waters of the flood bring their destructive power to all the earth again. The sign, the reminder to both God and na-ture, is the rainbow in the heavens. The psalm reminds us of this compassion of God, and begs God to remember us, not because of our goodness, but because of God’s goodness and fidelity to the prom-ise. God shows us how to be good, not by decree, but by example. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
