Dear Friends in Christ,I am grateful that Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet plays such an essential role in the work of the Church. Sadly, the need within the seven counties of our diocese is growing.

Because of you and your ability to see the face of God in the eyes of the hungry; the elderly; the sick; the homeless, and all those suffering affliction, Catholic Charities is allowed to do God’s work on earth. I thank you for your continued generosity and support you have shown Catholic Charities.

I am pleased to have you review the enclosed financial statements. The staff and Board of Directors encourage your participation, collaboration, and your continued support.

I am humbled by your generosity and I thank you for gifts. I ask that you continue to pray for the staff, Board and the many friends of Catholic Charities as they battle to fight poverty and crisis on behalf of each of the clients they serve every day.

May the Lord bless you and those who are dear to you.

Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet

Dear Friends of Catholic Charities,

There were many reasons to celebrate in (fiscal year) 2013. We wrapped up our commemoration of 50 years in the Diocese of Joliet and were honored to be recognized for doing God’s work within the community. Both the cities of Joliet and Kankakee issued proclamations for our many years of service to the poor and vulnerable. We reflected upon our successes and good works, but never lost sight of the need that still exists.

As you page through this Annual Report, you will read stories about individuals and families who benefited from our programs and services. You will see the faces of those whose lives were improved by Catholic Charities. This work is made possible through your kind hearts and generous donations. We are profoundly grateful for each and every gift which allows us to do the work that the Lord calls us to do within our community.

As always, I thank you for your support and look forward to continuing to provide vital services to the poor and vulnerable in the Diocese of Joliet.

Peace and blessings,

Glenn Van Cura Executive Director Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet

Senior Companion ProgramAfter a bad fall when Howard was in his early 90’s, his niece realized that she needed a bit of extra help caring for him. After contacting Grundy County, she was referred to Catholic Charities’ Senior Companion Program. Howard was connected with his senior companion, Karen, and the two have become great friends.

During their weekly visits, Karen and Howard sit together in the sunshine and eat lunch (followed by “lots of cookies” for dessert). Karen encourages Howard to walk around and exercise as much as possible. The two spend hours chatting and laughing together. These visits allow Howard’s niece (who is his full-time caretaker) the opportunity for much-deserved break.

Daybreak CenterMark, age 50, battled addiction for many years and eventually became homeless. With nowhere to go, Mark was forced to live on the streets of Joliet. During this difficult time, Mark came to the realization that he was at the lowest point in his life. He knew that it was time for a serious change and went to Daybreak Center homeless shelter.

“The staff is caring, intuitive, and non- judgmental,” he said. “They provide services based on the individual client’s needs. They help from the heart.” He began taking self-improvement classes provided by the Center and later received multiple certificates of completion for each course. Today, Mark lives in an apartment and is drug and alcohol free.

Transitional HousingJanice is a single mom who struggled to maintain stable housing for her family. Shortly after the birth of her third child, she became homeless and began staying at Catholic Charities’ Daybreak Center in Joliet. Although Daybreak Center provided a safe place for Janice and her children, she desperately wanted to find a home for her family.

Janice qualified for Catholic Charities’ Transitional Housing Program, which meant that she could move out of the shelter and into her own apartment. She found the perfect apartment in a two-flat within walking distance of her daughters’ schools and moved in shortly before Christmas 2012.

As Janice reflected on her continuing journey toward self-sufficiency, she said, “I love what Catholic Chari-ties has done for me. They pushed me to get here and I’m so happy.”

Permanent Supportive HousingDavid is a warm and friendly 53 year-old who lost his job in construction and became homeless in the winter of 2011. He struggled to survive while sleeping in his vehicle during the harsh winter. This scary and desperate situation exacerbated David’s bi-polar disorder and he became deeply depressed. “It was a nightmare,” he said.

Thankfully, David discov-ered Catholic Charities. A case manager determined that he was eligible for Permanent Supportive Housing, a program which provides housing for indi-viduals and families who struggle with one or more disabilities. David now lives in a safe and com-fortable apartment and is looking for a full-time job.

Mobile Food PantryJohn and Christina, a married couple in their mid-30’s, were among the group of hungry area residents who attended one of Catholic Charities’ Mobile Food Pantries one January morning. “We’re just here to get help with food,” Christina explained. Although John has a job at a local factory, his income only covers their rent and basic utilities. There is no money left over to pay for any other necessities or extras. John and Christina are faced with an all too common dilemma – paying for food vs. paying for utilities. They were overjoyed when a neighbor told them that Catholic Charities’ Mobile Food Pantry was coming to town. The news meant that the couple wouldn’t have to make those tough choices. They wouldn’t go hungry.

Head Start & CounselingWhen Sable’s daughter Sanaiah was a baby, the family escaped a domestic violence situation. While Sable felt lucky to be alive, she was left without any resources and felt very alone.

“I wanted Sanaiah to be in school,” she explained. “Her social skills weren’t where they needed to be.” Sable had noticed some changes in her daughter due to the trauma that she had endured and she wanted to ensure that her little girl received as much help and support as possible. Sable found Catholic Charities’ Head Start program online and enrolled Sanaiah in Early Head Start’s Home-Based program. Sanaiah also began seeing a counselor from Catholic Charities’ Hands of Hope Counseling Services.

This small family has made tremendous progress. Sanaiah is communicating more. She recently graduated from Early Head Start and now attends full day Head Start at one of Catholic Charities Head Start centers, where she is thriving.
