learning was taken seriously, but also aplace where one could gain a love forTorah and learning, and have fun at thesame time. Such institutions are rareindeed.

So, when I decided to start NJOP inthe summer of 1987, I knew that I need-ed someone special to help me make itwork. It was Rabbi Nochum Stilermanwho mentioned to me that Beryl mightbe available, and to this very day I amdeeply indebted to him for that infor-mation. Beryl and I had to start literallyfrom scratch. Rabbi Jay Marcus of theGenesis Foundation and Joseph (Yogi)Loshinsky of the Western WallFoundation were kind enough to let usshare their small offices in 475 FifthAvenue. Within eight months we hadgrown so rapidly that there was noroom for the original occupants.

In early 1988, just a few monthsafter we started, Rabbi Mordechai Reichjoined our staff as the first ProgramDirector. We launched our first HebrewReading campaign, and 5,000 peopleresponded! We were blown away!

However, would these same participantsrespond to something more Jewish, likeBasic Judaism? 3,000 of the originalHebrew Reading students enrolled! Weknew immediately that we were on tosomething big. Beryl was there settingup our new offices at 485 Fifth Avenueand hiring additional staff, and addi-tional staff, and additional staff.

I guess the rest is history. So while I get the honor, it is Beryl

who deserves the credit, and Sam aswell, who used to come in to help uswith our bookkeeping and accountingwhenever necessary. As Beryl is today, she has been throughout the past 17years, a devoted servant of Al-mightyG-d and His people. For Beryl there is

no time clock, she is ready to serve 24/7.And even today, in her semi-retirement,she is still on top of everything, albeitfrom a distance, but no less effectivelythan before.

When G-d looked down fromheaven and saw the needs of His people,He knew that someone special wasneeded to help bring them back. So Hesent His extraordinary emissary, BerylLevenson, to help create our veryspecial organization.

Beryl, may it be G-d’s will that theDivine Presence continues to dwell inthe works of your hands and in everyone of your endeavors.

Shalom, Beryl!May you be blessed.

This year, in an effort to help NorthAmerican Jewry celebrate thePassover holiday in a more meaning-

ful way, the National Jewish OutreachProgram introduced a “PASSOVER ACROSS

AMERICA” initiative. Nineteen syna-gogues in sixteen cities offered PASSOVER

ACROSS AMERICA Seders as part of a pilotprogram. Additionally, in the days andweeks before the holiday, synagoguesand Jewish centers across NorthAmerica offered either a Model Seder orNJOP’s new Pre-Passover Workshop orboth, as a way to prepare for Passover.

“Since its inception, NJOP’s goalhas been to work with synagogues toenable them to reach out more effec-tively to the less affiliated Jews in theircommunities to give them a taste ofJewish tradition,” said Rabbi Ephraim Z.Buchwald, founder and director ofNJOP. “By creating easy-to-implement,appealing programs, we help syna-gogues forge these connections. As thenumbers show, PASSOVER ACROSS

AMERICA, which was conceived andsponsored by our dear and generousfriend, Mr. Sam Domb, was a phenome-nal success in this regard.”

The nineteen rabbis who hosted thepilot program and who benefitted fromNJOP’s programming materials and sub-sidized local advertising, found, on thewhole, that they succeeded in drawing awide range of non-members who werelooking for a place to celebrate Passover.

At the renowned Ohev ShalomTalmud Torah Congregation inWashington, D.C., also known as “TheNational Synagogue,” nearly 300 people--90% of whom had never been to the syn-agogue before--joined Rabbi ShmuelHerzfeld for the first seder. “It was aremarkable evening of everybody joiningtogether,” the rabbi said. “At our PASSOVER

ACROSS AMERICA Seder, we had peoplefrom all walks of life and socio-economicstrata...People came in as strangers andleft as a community. People loved theexperience so much, that some expressedinterest in joining our shul, while otherswanted to learn about more of our pro-grams and services.”

Similarly, Rabbi Shaanon Gelman,of the Community Kollel in Boca Raton,Florida, reported that of the 50 peoplewho attended the PASSOVER ACROSS

AMERICA Seder, 90% were new faces. Each synagogue that hosted a

PASSOVER ACROSS AMERICA Seder receivedcopies of the newly published NJOPHaggadah, which includes text inHebrew, English and transliteratedHebrew, as well as a step-by-step leader’sguide filled with explanations, storiesand unique seder insights. In addition, each synagogue received a training videoand financial support to assist their mar-keting and advertising efforts.

“I’ve run many communal seders,”said Rabbi Elie Weinstock of Congregation

Kehilath Jeshurun in Manhattan, “but thePASSOVER ACROSS AMERICA component andthe NJOP materials made the experienceeven better, and brought in different peo-ple. We had more than 150 people at ourseder, ranging from newborn babies tosenior citizens, and everyone involvedenjoyed a compelling, meaningful, andmoving experience.”

“The best thing for me was theHaggadah,” said Rabbi Yaacov Vann ofthe Calabasas Shul in Calabasas,California. “It is very user-friendly andis geared toward the needs of peoplewho may not have participated in a tra-ditional seder before.”

“The NJOP leader’s guide was veryuseful,” said Rabbi Barry Gelman ofUnited Orthodox Synagogues inHouston, where 140 people attended aseder on the second night of Passover. “Itprovided me with innovative ideas forexplaining concepts and offered thoughtsthat really resonated with people.”

Other synagogues were equally suc-cessful in their efforts to implementNJOP’s Model Seder and Pre-PassoverWorkshop programs. The Model Sederprogram, a step-by-step tour throughthe Passover seder, complete with expla-nations, stories and songs, is based onRabbi Buchwald’s renowned LincolnSquare Synagogue Model Seder and hasbeen a popular program for many years.

The Pre-Passover Workshop, whichis new to the NJOP curriculum, wasdesigned to enable the uninitiated toexplore the larger motifs of Passoverprior to attending a seder. Included inthe Workshop are discussions concern-ing the meaning of “Passover,” theHaggadah, matzah and why the sederis relevant to Jews of every age. NJOP’sPre-Passover Workshop reflects a real-ization that in the 21st century, mostJews have more than four questions forwhich they seek answers.

“It’s clear that participating syna-gogues communicated the very impor-tant message that their doors are openand that everyone is welcome to partici-pate in PASSOVER ACROSS AMERICA,” saidRabbi Buchwald. “The way individuals, generations and communities connectedthrough this beautiful program reallyunderscores the themes of communityand freedom that are so powerful duringPassover. Hopefully, the connections thatwere made between Jews and their her-itage and between rabbis and communi-ty members will produce spiritual bene-fits for many years to come.”

May the L-rd protect and defend you. May He always

shield you from shame. May youcome to be in Israel a shining name.

(“Sabbath Prayer,” Fiddler on the Roof)

Perhaps you recognize these words from Tevyaand Golde’s “Sabbath Prayer” for their fivedaughters in the musical Fiddler on the Roof.

More than just a lovely song, however, the“Sabbath Prayer” is Broadway’s attempt to por-tray Birkat HaBanim, the weekly Shabbat customwhen Jewish parents bless their children onFriday night.

One of the most important benefits ofSabbath observance is the opportunity to celebrate“family time.” Liberated from the constant inter-ruptions of the telephone or the lure of the televi-sion, Jews around the world spend Shabbat “qual-ity time” together. Whether with relatives orfriends, or even among strangers in a new com-munity, the Shabbat table fosters a warm familyatmosphere.

As the poet/philosopher Achad Ha’ahmnoted: “More than the Jews have kept Shabbat,

Shabbat has kept the Jews.” But what aboutShabbat has kept the Jews? Perhaps it is the lovefor Jewish life that is transmitted from one gener-ation to the next through Birkat HaBanim, theBlessing of the Children, every Friday night.

While it is customary for parents to bless theirchildren every week at Shabbat dinner, the BirkatHaBanim Discussion Guide, NJOP’s newestSHABBAT ACROSS AMERICA/CANADA supplementalprogram, focuses on the power of giving a blessingto another person. In this way, all members of everycongregation, those with children and those with-out, are included in the theme of the program.

The Birkat HaBanim Discussion Guide, writ-ten and designed by NJOP’s Sarah Rochel Hewitt, highlights four Biblical or Talmudic sources per-taining to the general theme of blessings: ‘G-d’sblessings to humankind,’ ‘People blessing people,’‘Who has the ability to bless,’ and ‘Blessings, notmiracles.’ Through the detailed discussion guide, moderators and participants at this year’s SAA/Cexplored what it means to give a blessing toanother person, as well as why the Jews use thespecific text of the weekly blessing of the children.

The Birkat HaBanim Discussion Guide joins

Makom Ohr Shalom’s SAA program took the theme of

Jewish humor. For all who attended, it was a very spirited and successful evening. The rabbi, cantor and select congregants all

contributed humor, and there was much laughterin the congregation. As part of the Oneg, we

had a game to tell and hear Jewish jokes, which generated a lot of laughter and play.

Shabbat Across America/Canada 2005The Ninth Annual SHABBAT ACROSS AMERICA/CANADA, which was held on March 4, 2005, was a brilliant success. Over 650 synagogues and Jewish centers ran theprogram this year, and many reported a significant increase in the number of participants. There were 47 new locations this year, including participants inMontana. But don’t take our word for the program’s popularity--here’s what the coordinators had to say!

We generally have twoShabbat dinners each month. SAA

successful actor, featured in Broadway’sBarnum, to becoming a yeshiva studentin Israel, to staunch NJOP supporter. This year, Eddie and his wife, Batya, were the recipients of the Leslie NelkinSpecial Service Award, in acknowledg-ment of their efforts to enhance Jewishlife through their acclaimed Jewish artand architecture that has appearedaround the world over the past 20 years.

It all began at Rabbi Buchwald’sLincoln Square Synagogue BeginnersService, which has served as the proto-type for the hundreds ofservices subsequentlycreated aroundthe world bythe NationalJewishOutreachProgram. In a dra-maticrecreation,Eddie andRabbiBuchwaldexplored how a sim-ple introduction to basicJewish concepts, accom-panied by a warm andcaring Jewish community, inspired oneunaffiliated Jew to become a vital partof the Jewish people.

In a fitting tribute, the Leslie NelkinSpecial Service Award was stirringlypresented to Batya and Eddie byBatya’s father, Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, theChief Rabbi of Efrat and FoundingRabbi of Lincoln Square Synagogue.Having witnessed the profound effectsof Rabbi Buchwald’s outreach effortsnot only on the Lincoln SquareSynagogue community, but on his ownfamily as well, Rabbi Riskin commented:“NJOP is about angels. Any humanbeing who helps bring about G-d’s des-tiny in the world is ipso facto an angel.Rabbi Buchwald is an active angel whobrings people into heaven even whenthey are still walking on earth.”

Aside from the outreach “angels”that NJOP sends throughout the world,NJOP is also the beneficiary of the gen-erosity of many angels who support thecreation of new programs accompaniedby innovative educational material andcreative advertising--which are dissemi-nated free of charge to hundreds of par-ticipating synagogues and Jewish cen-ters. The annual Dinner is the perfect

venue for NJOP to recognize and paytribute to these extraordinary donorsand their commitment to NJOP’s vitalwork.

No organization could wish for amore generous “angel” than Mr. SamDomb. NJOP has been truly blessed tohave been the recipient of his extraordi-nary insight, generosity and love. In asurprise tribute to Mr. Domb, RabbiBuchwald described a scene that por-trayed Mr. Domb’s true nature:

“I was invited to a parlor meetingthat Sam Domb held in his townhouse

for the benefit of the YeshivaKetana of Manhattan,

one of the dayschools on the

Upper WestSide. Thatevening, Mr.Dombannouncedhis donation

of $100,000to Yeshiva

Ketana--quite agenerous sum,

you must admit. ButSam Domb has his ownway of giving charity.

When he announced the$100,000 donation for Yeshiva Ketana, hesaid to those in attendance: ‘There’sanother day school in our neighborhoodthat also needs our support. I thereforepledge an additional $100,000 to theManhattan Day School.’ When I calledthe leaders of the Manhattan Day Schoolto tell them of Sam’s benevolence, theywere in shock. After all, they had notexpected nor solicited his money. ThenSam said, ‘And Rabbi Buchwald is help-ing to save Jews, so I’m giving him$100,000 as well.’ It was the charitableequivalent of a hat trick, something thatwe rarely see. That evening, Sam Dombraised about $450,000 for Yeshiva Ketanaof Manhattan, and with those pledges inhand, the yeshiva has gone on to raisemuch more money on its own.”

Mr. Domb’s generosity is very realand very substantial. The pain he feels, not only for the catastrophes in Jewishhistory, but also for the current state ofthe Jewish people, is matched only byhis boundless love for his Jewishbrethren. By way of introducing thisyear’s Guests of Honor, the Podolskyfamily, Mr. Domb said, “The greatesttreasure that G-d gave the Jewish peo-ple is the Torah, but not every one is a

“It wasn’t an easy path, for either ofus. I remember reading [NJOP’s] littleblue Hebrew Primer late at night, prac-ticing Adon Olam and slowly driftingoff to a good night’s sleep. But weekafter week, Rabbi Buchwald broughtthe service to life and, as I began to bet-ter understand the structure of the serv-ice, going to synagogue became a lotmore meaningful and fun....As a moviebuff, I would say that going to serviceswithout being able to read Hebrew islike watching a foreign film withoutsubtitles and sound,” remarked

Vladimir, in a beautiful trib-ute to NJOP for the

role it played intheir lives.

While theGutins rep-resent theexcitingsupportthat comes

from NJOPalumnae,

HonoreesJanet and

Sholom Spitz aresterling examples ofNJOP supporters who, from the very begin-ning, have watched the

transformation of the organization froma one-man show into a nation-wide andworldwide phenomenon.

The Spitzes relationship with NJOPstems both from their commitment tothe Jewish people and familial bonds--they are the brother-in-law and sister-in-law of Rabbi Ephraim Buchwald. While it might have been this family tiethat brought NJOP to the Spitzes’ atten-tion, it was the incredible energy andthe success of Rabbi Buchwald and hisorganization that made them suchenthusiastic supporters. “We all beganto realize,” commented Sholom, “that[Rabbi Buchwald] had a unique capaci-ty to reach people on a level thatallowed them to experience Judaismand connect to their souls as neverbefore.” That realization is the founda-tion of the Spitzes’ support of theNational Jewish Outreach Program, and, as noted by Janet and Uri Kaufthalduring the Spitzes’ tribute video, it issupport that they give with constantpositive energy and enjoyment.

In addition to their ongoing support, the Spitzes have been the sponsors ofRabbi Buchwald’s weekly Torah mes-

scholar of the Torah. I am not....But I ama defender of the Torah, and so are thePodolskys...”

That the Podolsky family existstoday to share in the work of NJOP is,in itself, a story of survival. From theashes of Europe, Zenek and FannyPodolsky came to Brooklyn, rebuilt theirlives and created a beautiful family withseven children. Indeed, so profound istheir story of regeneration and dedica-tion to their community, as well as theirpersonal success, that, at the end of theevening, New York DemocraticCongressman AnthonyWeiner presented themwith a specialCongressionalProclamation.

“Historytaught us alesson,” Mr.Dombdeclared,“that Jewishsurvival canonly be guar-anteed by us, notby anyone else. Andtonight I want to tell youthat Jewish survival isguaranteed by a familyby the name of Podolsky. We cannot change our yesterdays, butwe sure can change our tomorrows.[With] people like the Podolsky family, there will be better tomorrows.”

Better tomorrows obviously beginwith the quality young leadership with-in the Jewish community. This year,NJOP’s Young Leadership Award waspresented to Eliana and Vladimir Gutin, who have a unique, almost fairytale, story. Eliana, a beautiful model fromGorky in the former Soviet Union, cameto the United States and began model-ing for a designer of clothing forOrthodox Jewish women. Fascinated byJewish life, she began attending RabbiBuchwald’s Beginners Service andeventually converted to Judaism. Elianamet handsome, dashing Vlad, who wasthen starting his career at Goldman-Sachs, and told him in no uncertainterms that she would not marry himuntil he became more observant. Shebrought him to the Beginners Service, where he relearned the Hebrew he hadforgotten since his Bar Mitzvah. Nowmarried and blessed with two beautifulchildren, they are living a full and ful-filling Jewish life.

sage since the founding of NJOP in1987, in memory of Naftali Tzvi Spitz,z”l, the father of Sholom Spitz andAidel Buchwald.

As the Dinner drew to its conclu-sion, Rabbi Buchwald announced onefinal tribute. “While I am given creditfor the success of NJOP,” RabbiBuchwald stated, “Beryl Levenson[Associate Director of NJOP] was therefrom the very start. Beryl is the trueheart and soul of the National JewishOutreach Program. Over the past 17years...Beryl took our organization fromits infancy and guided it to become oneof the largest and most successful out-reach organizations in the world. Timehas no meaning for Beryl, she is on forthe Jewish people 24/7.” RabbiBuchwald also noted that Beryl’s hus-band Sam, an accountant, has alsogiven of his talents to help NJOP when-ever asked. After 17 years of dedication,Beryl and Sam have moved forwardwith their plans for Aliyah. While Berylfound people to take over some of herwork, the organization is blessed toknow that she will be continuing towork for NJOP from afar.

Dedication such as that demonstrat-ed by NJOP’s honorees and employeesattests to just how important NJOP’swork is, and the success of the EleventhAnnual Dinner is a testament to howdeeply and effectively that worktouches the Jewish people.

Singles Dinner Number 5!

There are many ways to reach out to the Jewish people, and NJOP is commit-ted to utilizing the ones that show the most promise. Convinced of thepositive impact of the warmth of a Shabbat meal, along with the opportunity

to hear inspiring words of Torah, and perhaps meet the right person, NJOP has,for the last 5 years, been reaching out to singles on Manhattan’s Upper WestSide with sumptuous Friday night dinners. On April 8, 2005, NJOP, once again, hosted a special Shabbat dinner, sponsored by our loyal and dear friend Mr.Sam Domb, at the West Side Institutional Synagogue.

Over 200 singles from across the tri-state area attended the spirited evening.Rabbi Ephraim Buchwald kicked off the night with opening remarks, followedby Gary Tolchinksy’s insightful Dvar Torah. Guest Speaker David Fishof, agentto high profile sports figures and music stars, kept the audience at the edge oftheir seats with his exciting and amusing speech describing his efforts to servehis clients effectively, while at the same time observing his faith correctly.

Thank you to our loyal Honorary Chairs, dedicated committee and tablehosts for their hard work and for helping to make this dinner a true success.Honorary Chairs: Carole and Jack Forgash and Michelle and Eli Salig.Committee: Karen and Andrew Duell, Joe Fraiman, Ron Goldofsky, MarjorieLipkin, Ruth and Benjamin Lubick, Rabbi Mayer Offman, Joel Pelofsky, AdenaSamowitz.

I’m grateful that the program exists. I tried to reviewHebrew on my own last year--that was not successful. Ididn’t know where to turn at a reasonable cost. I like myteacher and the materials. I rarely take the time to fill outsurveys because I am so pressed for time, but I felt I owe youat least this for a program that is very important to me.

S. A.Conshohocken, PA

I’ve had real difficulty when I tried previously. This coursemade it easier. I was thrilled from the first lesson when Iactually understood a sentence. From that point onward, Iwas “hooked on Hebrew!”

Elizabeth Bedwell Mississauga, ON

The most informative and excellent learning program I haveever had.

F. F.Brooklyn, NY

This course is a wonderful introduction to reading Hebrew. It is very exciting for me to read some Hebrew and many ofthe prayers.

S. K.Hewlett, NY

It was a very positive experience and opened up a newworld to me.

K. K.Smithtown, NY

A definite learning experience as well as a link to a basic life-long thread/culture that never goes away--and that’s a goodthing.

Susan RotterEast Meadow, NY

The techniques the Rabbi used to teach us the alphabet andreading were so good. I never could learn how to readHebrew as a child -I didn’t grasp it- but I learned the wholealphabet in only a few hours!

Karen SilvermanDresher, PA

I really enjoyed the program. I can read simple Hebrew textsnow. I feel more connected to my Judaism as a result.

Alison SpitzerAllentown, PA

I enjoyed the informal atmosphere of the class and thegracious manner of the instructor in explaining points andanswering questions.
