Funding for the development of this game was provided by a National Science Foundation GK-12 grant for the Boat-of-Knowledge in the Science Classroom (BooKS) project at Ohio University. The game is developed by the Virtual Immersive Technologies and Arts for Learning Laboratory (VITAL lab).

In the “Dilution or Pollution?” game, users play two levels. If user wins both levels, the user earns a prize. The prize is playing a fish-catching game in which the user is required to catch 20 fish in 10 seconds.

In level 1 user calculates a dilution concentration. The game presents two flasks with aqueous solutions. One solution has poor water quality (i.e. high nitrate concentration), and the other has good water quality with a low concentration of the pollutant. User calculates (outside of the game) the concentration of the pollutant in the combined, or diluted, solutions. After that, user drags each flask to the solution container. Buttons will appear with possible concentrations. If user selects the right answer, user gets 100 points.

In level 2 users will determine if water quality is acceptable by comparing given concentration to acceptable values for clean rivers. If user selects the right answer, user gets 100 points.
