PRODUCT FEATURES
2.1 DescriptionTheDigital TransformerRatiometerDTR®Model 8510 is a lightweight,rugged,portableinstrumentdesignedforonsitetestingofpower,potentialandcurrenttransformers.
OperationoftheDTR®8510isfullyautomatic.Nousercalibration,rangeselection,handcrankingortediousbalancingisrequired.
During each test cycle, the DTR® 8510 automatically checks for:• H/Xleadreversal
• Continuityoftestedcircuits/windings(ifconfigured)
• Shortcircuitconditions(highcurrent)
Upon completion of a test cycle, the DTR® 8510 displays:• Turns Ratio:Theratiooftheprimarytosecondaryvoltageatthe

• Excitation Current: TheRMSexcitationcurrentintheHwindingduetotestexcitationduringnegligibleloadingoftheassociatedXwinding
• Polarity:Indicatesthepolarity(phase)ofXrelativetoH• Deviation: Indicatesthedeviationfromnameplateratioin%

Digital Transformer Ratiometer DTR® Model 8510 7
The DTR® 8510 will display the following messages:• IncorrectLeadConnections• H/XReversal(accidentalstep-upmisconnection)• Short(excessexcitationcurrent)• OpenCircuits• CircuitContinuity• LowBattery

DataView®allowsfullcontroloftheinstrument.
The DTR® 8510 utilizes an advanced, low-voltage, step-down measure-ment technique in which the high voltage “H” windings are subjected to test excitation. This results in greater operator safety and the ability to test a much wider array of transformer types and sizes.

The smart charger has the following features:
• Multiple charge detection methods -dV (typical) and dT/dt. Typically,theindicationthatthebatteryisfullychargedisdetectedbyaslightdropinitsvoltage(-dV).However,ifthebatteriesareunusedforalongtime,theymaydisplaythesamedropinvoltageintheearlypartofthechargecycleeveniftheyarenotfullycharged.Thisisafalseindication.Inordertopreventtheterminationofchargecycleduetothisfalseindication,thereisanintegraltimerbuiltinthechargerwhichwilldisregardthe–dVforthefirstminutesofthechargecycle.
Thebatterypacksarebuiltwithathermistor.Thesmartchargerconstantlymonitorsthebatterypacktemperature.Abuilt-intemperaturechargecontrol(+dT/dt)securesoptimalcharge.
• Safety timer termination. Incasethebatteriesdonotexhibitsufficient–dV/dtforthechargertodetect,thereisaninternalsafetytimerwhichiscustom-programmedforthebatterypacksusedintheDTR® Model 8510.
• Fast charging cycle. Thischargecyclesuppliesamaximum900mAchargeuntil-dVis detected.
• Integral start timer to prevent initial, false -dV detection. Afewbatterycellsmayhaveavoltagedrop(-dV)inthefirstpartofthechargecycle.Thisisespeciallytrueforbatterycellswhichhavebeenidleforalongperiodoftime.Becauseofthis,astart-timerbuiltintothechargerprevents-dVdetectioninthefirstminutesofthechargercycle.
• Reverse polarity/short circuit protection. Thechargerisprotectedagainstreversepolaritybyanautomaticallyresettablepolyswitchfuseontheoutput.
• LED status indicator (seeTable8-1onpage54).
• Universal input voltage. Withtheuseofaproperpowercord,thechargercanbeconnectedtostandardACreceptacleanywhereintheworldwithouttheneedforanexternaltransformer.
