BackgroundStarting from small beginnings in 1978, Drummond Printing Pte Ltd was a family owned business operating as a local print store with offset print technologies.

Fast forward some 34 years, and today Drummond has asserted itself as a leading print and communication service provider with an extensive business network spanning the ASEAN region.

Steering the company’s course from the outset is CEO, Goh Chong Sing who has been involved in the printing industry for more than 30 years. His successor, Damien Goh, Managing Director of Drummond has built on the company’s success and further expanded the business overseas as well as forging new business growth and market dominance in the print production for sports events.

The ChallengeIt has not all been smooth sailing though. Drummond faced tremendous competition in the market place as their customers demanded faster turnaround time and the ability to communicate their requirements through the internet.

“To keep up with the changing

demand, we invested in our first entry-level Fuji Xerox digital print equipment, DC5065 with PrintShop Mail variable software in 2006. Printing for sports events was the first project we took up after embarking on the digital journey.

The organisers demand very fast turnaround time with small print runs and the participants’ information would only be provided after the closing date for us to personalize each race bib with a unique number together with other variable details.

In addition to learning new technology, we also faced production issues as the substrate used for the race bib is different from the commodity paper” said Damien.

The SolutionTo overcome the challenges, Fuji Xerox Singapore worked closely with Drummond to implement their digital printing roadmap.

In 2007, Drummond moved to a mid-level digital print equipment, the 700DCP. As print volumes grew, XMPie® variable software was added to provide an automated solution allowing not only the generation of running numbers but also providing a rule-based solution to promote 1to1 marketing.

On the back of continued rapid increase in print volume, Drummond invested in the production equipment Fuji Xerox Color 1000 Press in 2011, providing the ability to handle the tremendous increase in volume and more challenging substrate required for the production of race bibs.

Subsequently, Drummond also implemented the FreeFlow Web Services ordering tools to provide a seamless end to end solution from order entry to printing and shipping for their customers.

The ResultsProducing more JobsEquipped with the Fuji Xerox Color 1000 Press, Drummond has successfully increased the volume of print output by 300% over a 5-year period.

Variable-data PrintingVersatile workflows via XMPie® variable data software enable Drummond to deliver higher ROI per campaign. Its strength in the production of race bibs is further enhanced with the variable-data printing by giving every participant a unique numbering. This had helped the organisers to be more effective with the identification of race participants.

Digital printing has provided additional flexibility and agility, allowing Drummond to produce more jobs and to tailor the finished product to each customer’s specific requirements.
