Who is the most listened-to pianist onYouTube? Not the ubiquitous Lang Lang, asyou might expect, but Valentina Lisitsa, whois now approaching a staggering fifty millionhits. And its though this medium that shehas single-handedly reinvented her career. The story begins in Kiev, in the Ukraine,

where Valentina Lisitsa was born in 1973.She began the piano aged three, showednatural ability, and from then the course wasset. As she laughingly puts it, My mumwas a real stage parent! The way forwardat this point, if you lived behind the IronCurtain, was via music competitions. Itwas all about competing and winning, as ifmusic were a sport. Everything was gearedtowards the next competition, and theplaying had to be inoffensive so as not tooffend the judges but that was not musicto me. I did enjoy being on stage, but not inthis way. Instead she found pleasure inclasses where there was no competitiveelement playing chamber music andaccompanying, or sightreading her waythrough symphonies and operas. That herprodigious musicianship has survivedunscathed says much for her character.I was young, and I didnt quite analysewhat was going on I didnt realise thathere were two irreconcilable approachesto music. To hear Valentina play is to be reminded

of an old style of playing: theres virtuosityaplenty but theres also a profound beautyof line, whether shes playing BeethovensMoonlight Sonata or SchumannsTrumerei. My greatest heroes are all fromthe past: first and foremost Rachmaninov;but also the great Polish pianist JosefHofmann you can learn so much from theway he achieves particular musical effects and Wilhelm Backhaus, who was so famed for his Beethoven. Its adream team!Its ironic that it was a competition that

finally released her from this somewhatbrutalist system: she and her pianisthusband Alexei Kuznetsoff (who had been aclass-mate in Kiev) won the Dranoff TwoPiano Competition in 1991 and moved to the USA. That was one factor that shapedValentinas career; another rather moreunlikely one was her love of chess. Itbecame my refuge when I was growing up.Youve got to remember that it was a hugely popular thing: it made prime-timenews and, unlike music competitions, if youwon a chess competition it was becauseyou knew more, or were a more aggressiveplayer. But just like in music there is adifference between old-style Romanticplaying and the modern style, in chess there is the winning move and the mostbeautiful one. And I realised I chose the

most beautiful ones, so thats when Idecided I should probably abandon playingin piano competitions! Fast-forward some fifteen years, to 2007.

Valentinas career was going through a slowpatch when she uploaded a video clip ofRachmaninovs tude-tableau, op.39 no.6(the wonderfully nicknamed Little RedRiding Hood), which she has included onthis recital. The resolution was low, thesound wasnt great but we put it onbecause it was free to upload! And forsome reason people liked it. Thatssomething of an understatement. This wasfollowed by Chopins tudes in what waseffectively a home-made DVD. This becameavailable on Amazon too, and suddenly shefound herself as the No.1 seller. And this,without any reviews in magazines or anymarketing. That might have made somepianists bitter, but not Valentina: she hascreated her own success, and shes justlyproud of her self-sufficiency. Shes alsoaware that shes a trend-setter within theoften conservative world of classical musicin her adoption of new media and herwillingness to interact with the world atlarge. Im very happy if Ive showed theway. I get lots of messages from peoplesaying Im giving them hope becausethey can see that you can succeed withouta huge amount of capital or a major PRcompany, by word of mouth. People arevery sensitive to anything fake. And thats

the point: Valentina is the real deal: a hugelygifted musician whose delight in what shedoes is infectious. As she says, I just wantto keep playing until I drop dead; I dontwant to teach; I dont want to make lots ofmoney. And shes not just saying it.Perhaps precisely because of that

intensely polished approach to music-making in her youth, Valentina is nowabsolutely keen to share the whole process,warts and all, with her audience. Music istransitory. You cannot cage the moment and put it in stone. And Im fighting thatidea that it has to be perfect. The newgeneration growing up today hear perfectperformances via CDs, and they think thats how it actually happens.So via YouTube you can see Valentina

practising; you can witness her droppingnotes; you can laugh with her as she playstake after take of one of Rachmaninovsmost fiendish tudes-tableaux in a recording session. She is refreshingly downto earth: her extraordinary rise to fame onlyreally hit home, she says, while she wasstaying in the UK for a week and someonerecognised her in Waitrose. And herreaction, typically, was not only to pose forphotos but to rush back to the apartmentand fetch a DVD! But theres no question that shes created

a worldwide buzz, both among thecognoscenti and the wider public: her debutat the Royal Albert Hall on 19 June has

attracted people from all over the world.Theres a lady from Barbados coming,people from New Zealand. Basically its agathering for friends old and new. Of courseits a concert, but its also a celebration.Just as people power has made her nameon the internet, so it seems entirely apt that it should be a two-way process, withthe audience choosing what she plays in theAlbert Hall. At the time of writing, there was a cliff-hanger in the votingbetween Beethovens Moonlight andAppassionata Sonatas and a similarlyclose-run contest between a MozartFantasy, a Bach Partita and a SchubertImpromptu. Though much of this repertoire has

been in Valentinas fingers for a good fewyears, Scriabin is a more recent discovery. I came to him rather reluctantly but fell inlove: its fascinating to compare him withRachmaninov; they were contemporariesbut followed such different paths, withScriabin picking up where Chopin left off andthen going absolutely his own way in hisshort life! Rachmaninov and Chopin aremainstays of Valentinas huge repertoire, andits perhaps in their music, above all, thatyoure most aware of what she has learntfrom those dead teachers of hers: thatthe piano can be, in the right hands, averitable songbird.

Larsolution tait mdiocre, la prise de sonntait pas fameuse mais nous lavonsmise en ligne parce que ctait gratuit !Et, pour une raison ou pour une autre, elle a t apprcie. Cest un peu uneuphmisme. Cette vido sera suivie des tudes de Chopin dans ce qui est en fait un DVD fait maison. Celui-ci estgalement vendu par Amazon, et soudainelle se retrouve en tte des ventes. Et cela sans aucune critique dans les revues ni marketing. Cela aurait pu rendre amerscertains pianistes, mais pas Valentina : elle a cr son propre succs, et elle est juste titre fire de son autonomie. Elle agalement conscience dinnover dans lemonde souvent conservateur de la musiqueclassique, en adoptant de nouveaux mdiaset en tant prte linteraction avec un

large public. Je suis trs heureuse si jaimontr la voie. Je reois beaucoup demessages de gens qui disent que je leurdonne de lespoir parce quils voientquon peut russir sans un gros capital ousans une grande socit de relationspubliques, simplement grce au bouche--oreilles. Les gens sentent trs bien tout cequi est factice. Et cest bien cela son atout :Valentina est trs authentique : unemusicienne immensment doue, dont leplaisir ce quelle fait est contagieux.Je veux seulement continuer jouerjusqu ma mort ; je ne veux pas enseigner ;je ne veux pas gagner beaucoup dargent.Et elle est vraiment sincre.Peut-tre prcisment en raison de cette

Durch dieses Portal hatsie im Alleingang ihrer Karriere ein neuesProfil gegeben. Die Geschichte beginnt in Kiev, in der

Ukraine, wo Valentina Lisitsa 1973 geborenwurde. Als sie mit drei Jahren das Klavierentdeckte, lie sie Naturtalent erkennen,und von da an stand die Zukunft fest. Aber ebenso wie in der Musik bestehtein Unterschied zwischen dem romanti -schen Spiel nach alter Schule und demmodernen Stil; beim Schach gibt es denentscheidenden Zug und den schnstenZug, und als mir klar wurde, dass mir dieschnsten Zge lieber waren, beschloss ich, dass es wahrscheinlich besser war, die Klavierwettbewerbe aufzugeben! Rund 15 Jahre vergingen. Valentina kam

mit ihrer Karriere nur schleppend voran, alssie 2007 einen Videoclip von Rachmaninovstude-tableau, op. 39, Nr. 6 (mit demschnen Beinamen Rotkppchen) insInternet stellte. Die Auflsung war niedrig,der Ton nicht berragend aber wir ludenes hoch, weil es ja nichts kostete! Undirgendwie gefiel es den Leuten. Das isteine leichte Untertreibung. Diesem Stck,das auch auf der vorliegenden CD enthaltenist, folgten Chopins tudes, effektiv in Formeiner selbstgemachten DVD, die dann auchber Amazon angeboten wurde, und pltz -lich stieg Valentina an die Spitze der Best -seller auf. Und das ohne Rezensionen inZeitschriften oder irgendwelches Marke ting.Manche Pianisten htte das vielleichtverbittert, aber nicht Valentina: Sie hat ihrenErfolg selbst geschmiedet und ist zu Recht

stolz auf ihre Unabhngigkeit. Sie ist sichauch bewusst, dass sie durch ihre Aufge -schlos senheit gegenber den neuen Medienund die Bereitschaft, mit der groen, weitenWelt direkt in Kontakt zu treten, in dem oftkonservativen Reich der klassischen Musikeinen neuen Trend aus gelst hat. Ich wrdemich freuen, wenn ich anderen den Weggewiesen habe. Viele Leute schreiben mir,dass ich ihnen Hoff nung gebe denn siesehen, dass man auch ohne riesigenfinanziellen Aufwand oder eine groe PR-Firma Erfolg haben kann, einfach durchWeiterempfehlung. Il fatto che questa sua prodigiosamusicalit sia sopravvissuta incolume la dicelunga sulla sua personalit. Ero giovane enon analizzavo fino in fondo quantoaccadeva non mi ero resa conto chequesti erano due modi irriconciliabili diaccostarsi alla musica.

Ascoltando Valentina vengono in mente le esecuzioni vecchio stile: abbonda ilvirtuosismo, ma emerge anche una profondabellezza melodica, che stia interpretando laSonata Al chiaro di luna di Beethoven o ilSogno di Schumann. I miei pi grandi eroisono tutti quelli del passato, soprattuttoRachmaninov, ma anche il grande pianistapolacco Josef Hofmann si pu impararetanto dal suo modo di ottenere particolarieffetti musicali e Wilhelm Backhaus,famosissimo per il suo Beethoven. concorso a liberarla da questo sistemaspietato: con il marito, il pianista AlexeiKuznetsoff (suo ex compagno di studi aKiev) nel 1991 vinceva il concorso Dranoffper due pianoforti e si trasferiva negli USA.Questo fattore ha dato forma alla carriera diValentina; un altro pi inconsueto statolamore per gli scacchi. Erano il mio rifugiomentre crescevo. Bisogna ricordare che eraun gioco enormemente popolare: facevanotizia nelle ore di punta e, a differenza deiconcorsi musicali, vincere una gara discacchi significava saperne di pi o avere unmetodo di gioco pi aggressivo. Ma come nella musica c differenza tralinterpretazione romantica tradizionale e lostile moderno; negli scacchi c lo scaccomatto, ma anche la mossa pi bella. Io ho

Era solo linizioSeguivano gli Studi di Chopin in quello cheera in realt un DVD fatto in casa, poidisponibile su Amazon e ad un tratto lapianista si ritrovata al primo posto nellevendite. E tutto questo senza recensionistampa n marketing. Una cosa cheavrebbe potuto suscitare risentimento in unaltro artista, ma non in Valentina: ha creato ilproprio successo ed giustamenteorgogliosa della sua autonomia. ancheconsapevole di aver lanciato una modanellambito del mondo spesso conservatoredella musica classica con ladozione deinuovi media e la disponibilit a interagirecon il mondo esterno. Sono molto felice sesono riuscita ad aprire la strada agli altri. Miarrivano molti messaggi di persone chedicono di aver cominciato a sperare, perchvedono che si pu avere successo anchesenza lappoggio di enormi capitali o diunimportante azienda di PR, attraverso il

passaparola. La gente intuisce presto se lecose non sono autentiche. Ed qui che stail punto: Valentina una musicista di dotistraordinarie e il suo piacere per quello chefa contagioso. Voglio solo continuare asuonare fino allultimo respiro; non voglioinsegnare; non voglio fare tanti soldi. E nonfa tanto per dire. Forse proprio per via dellapproccio

intensamente perfezionista nei confronti delfare musica della sua infanzia, oggi Valentina molto desiderosa di condividere linteroprocesso, nel bene e nel male, con il suopubblico. La musica effimera. Non si pu imprigionare lattimo e scolpirlo nellaroccia. E io non sono contro lidea dellaperfezione. Oggi, le nuove generazionipossono ascoltare esecuzioni perfetteregistrate su CD e pensano che questa siala realt. Cos attraverso YouTube si pu vedere

Valentina esercitarsi; si pu sentire quandosalta le note; si pu ridere con lei quandocontinua a ripetere battute del pi infernaletude-tableau di Rachmaninov in una seduta di registrazione. gradevolmentepratica: dice di essersi resa conto del suostraordinario successo durante un soggiornodi una settimana nel Regno Unito, perchqualcuno lha riconosciuta al supermercato.La sua caratteristica reazione, oltre aspingerla a posare per una foto, stataquella di precipitarsi nel suo appartamentoper andare a prendere un DVD!

Linteresse universale che ha suscitato,sia tra gli esperti sia tra il gran pubblico, indubbio: il suo esordio alla Royal Albert Hallil 19 giugno ha richiamato spettatori da tuttoil mondo. Vengono una signora dalleBarbados e alcuni dalla Nuova Zelanda. Inpratica, una riunione di amici vecchi enuovi. un concerto, s, ma anche unafesta. Come il potere del pubblico le hacreato un nome su Internet, cos sembrato del tutto giusto restituire qualcosae lasciare che fosse il pubblico a scegliere ilprogramma per il concerto allAlbert Hall.E infatti, per esempio, i voti sono rimasti inbilico tra le Sonate di Beethoven Al chiaro diluna e Appassionata, mentre altri braniprotagonisti di sfide di stretta misura sonostati una Fantasia di Mozart, una Partita diBach e un Improvviso di Schubert. Sebbene Valentina abbia gran parte di

questo repertorio a portata di dita da un bel po di anni, Scriabin una scopertapi recente. Mi sono accostata a lui conuna certa ritrosia, ma poi me ne sonoinnamorata. Il confronto con Rachmaninov affascinante. Erano contemporanei, mahanno scelto vie molto diverse: Scriabin hacominciato dove aveva finito Chopin e poi ha seguito una direzione molto personalenella sua breve vita! Rachmaninov eChopin sono due pilastri nellenormerepertorio di Valentina e forse nella loromusica, soprattutto, che si intuiscesoprattutto la lezione che ha imparato daisuoi maestri defunti: nelle mani giuste,il pianoforte pu essere lo strumentopi melodioso.
