But First, A Little Bit About Me• Don Johnson• Resident of New Haven, CT for 4+ years, before that most of my adult life

in Southern California.• BA in Math, minor in physics, but have long ago forgotten what I learned.• A “software developer” for close to 40 years, with most of that developing

software for automated warehouses and the “Top Gun” combat aircrew training systems.

• An atheist/evolutionist from roughly age 20 to age 36 when I became a Christian.

• Struggled much with this strange new idea of “In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth.”

Page 3: Did The Universe Create Itself?

• “ …the “Big Bang” was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics.” Stephen Hawking

• “ … tiny quantum fluctuations in the very early universe became the seeds from which galaxies, stars, and ultimately human life emerged” Stephen Hawking

• “Creation … , really does amount to something complicated springing spontaneously into existence”. Richard Dawkins

• If you look at the universe and study the universe, what you find is that there is no evidence that we need anything other than the laws of physics and the other laws of science to explain everything we see. There's absolutely no evidence that we need any supernatural hand of god. -- Lawrence Krauss, World-Renowned Physicist

Page 4: Did The Universe Create Itself?

• This is the thinking common in the culture today, and is being taught to the younger generations.

Stephen Hawking, Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss are among the worlds foremost evolutionary scientists. They are atheists, and are among the most visible and ardent proponents of Darwinian evolution and atheism in todays culture.

Lets Look At The Laws of Physics

• Newton’s Three Laws of Motion:• “Law” of Gravity:• Conservation of Mass-Energy:• Conservation of Momentum:• Laws of Thermodynamics:• Electrostatic Laws:• Invariance of the Speed of Light:

Page 9: Did The Universe Create Itself?

And Ask Yourself a Few Questions

• Do these laws explain a method, a mechanism or a formula for producing a universe?

or • Do these laws describe an already existent

universe?

So science has identified something on the order of 230 constants relevant to our known universe. And it is claimed that these constants and laws are finely tuned such that even a small change in any of them would make life as we know it impossible.

Again the questions.

• Do these constants explain a method, a mechanism or a formula that would cause a universe to come into existence?

or

• Do these constants describe and constrain an already existent universe?

Machines in Our Cells

• Now take a look at some of the Molecular Machines in our cells that Scientists Have Argued Show Irreducible Complexity. For brevity’s sake I have listed only the names of the machines, but have left a few descriptions to whet your appetite (Note: Not all of the items listed exist in human cells, nor do they exist in all cells). My thanks to Casey Luskin of Discovery Institute for this list.

• 14. Cytochrome C Oxidase: 15. Proteosome: The proteosome is a large molecular machine whose parts must be must be carefully assembled in a particular order. For example, the 26S proteosome has 33 distinct subunits which enable it to perform its function to degrade and destroy proteins that have been misfolded in the cell or otherwise tagged for destruction.50 One paper suggested that a particular eukaryotic proteasome “is the core complex of an energy-dependent protein degradation machinery that equals the protein synthesis machinery in its complexity.”51

RNA Polymerase: Like its DNA polymerase counterpart, the function of the RNA polymerase is to create a messenger RNA strand from a DNA template strand. Called “a huge factory with many moving parts,”78 it is a “directional machine and, indeed, as a molecular motor” where it functions “as a dynamic, fluctuating, molecular motor capable of producing force and torque.”79

Helicase/Topoisomerase Machine: The helicase and topoisomerase machines work together to properly unwrap or unzip DNA prior to transcription of DNA into mRNA or DNA replication.90 Topoisomerase performs this function by cutting one DNA strand and then holding on to the other while the cut strand unwinds.91

39. RNA degradasome: 40. Photosynthetic system: The processes that plants use to convert light into chemical energy a type of molecular machines.95 For example, photosystem 1 contains over three dozen proteins and many chlorophyll and other molecules which convert light energy into useful energy in the cell. “Antenna” molecules help increase the amount of light absorbed.96 Many complex molecules are necessary for this pathway to function properly.

Page 32: Did The Universe Create Itself?

Again, the very small

Page 33: Did The Universe Create Itself?

And the very large

Page 34: Did The Universe Create Itself?

Now Compare Two Accounts of Creation

• “ … tiny quantum fluctuations in the very early universe became the seeds from which galaxies, stars, and ultimately human life emerged”

• “In the Beginning God created the heavens and the Earth”

Quantum fluctuation is the temporary appearance of energetic particles out of nothing, as allowed by the Uncertainty Principle.

Page 35: Did The Universe Create Itself?

• “… pairs appear, lead a brief existence, and then annihilate one another …?”

This … this is what created the universe, galaxies, stars, planets and the myriads of life forms on our own earth?

This … this is what ultimately created human creativity and intellect? Music? Literature? Architecture? Art? Culture? Family? the scientific method?

Pairs appear … and then annihilate one another? Does this process lend itself to the creation of the enormous and dense information contained in the DNA molecule?

Does this seem to you to be a strong argument for evolution as the cause of all things … seen and unseen?

Page 36: Did The Universe Create Itself?

Or Does This Make More Sense?Psalm 19For the director of music. A psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them.Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth.

So Which Is It?

This? The No God Hypotheses

Page 39: Did The Universe Create Itself?

Or This? The God Hypotheses

Page 40: Did The Universe Create Itself?

AND SO WHAT? WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

Page 41: Did The Universe Create Itself?

The first verse of the Bible identifies who God is. He is the Creator, not an idea, not a moral standard, etc.; He is the Creator. All of Scripture agrees and supports that point. The Bible begins that way, and continues on through the Psalms (Psalm 19:1 says, ‘The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament shows His handiwork.’) the epistles (Colossians 1:16-17), and the last book of the Bible (Revelation 4:11 says, ‘Thou are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.’). Thus the concept of literal creation identifies the Creator.

Page 42: Did The Universe Create Itself?

The second point is that creation identifies man. Man is not just a body, a stack of chemicals, as it were, which arrived by natural processes. Yes, man does have a body, but he also has a mind and a spirit (Genesis 1:26-27 says, ‘And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.’). Man is in the personality image of the Creator.

Donald Chittick, Ph.DCreationist Physical Chemist (USA)http://creation.com/what-is-biblical-creation-and-why-is-it-important

Page 43: Did The Universe Create Itself?

The third point is that creation is the basis of the Gospel. Man was created perfect, but in Genesis 3 we have the account of the Fall. Man was tempted to substitute his own autonomous truth standard for the Creator’s absolute. Up until the Fall, the Creator’s Word was the test and standard for truth. The Creator said, ‘Don’t eat this fruit.’

Page 44: Did The Universe Create Itself?

AGAIN!SO WHAT? WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

Page 45: Did The Universe Create Itself?

You may believe in the Biblical Creation as the answer to “why are we here?”Or

You may believe in Darwinian Evolution as the answer to “why are we here?”

BUT

If you have kids or grandkids in a public high school, they are learning Darwinian Evolution.• In their coursework.• From teachers.• From their friends.• From the media.

Even if they go to church.

And they are learning it as truth!

Page 46: Did The Universe Create Itself?

And they are learning it as truth, and will not hear a clear presentation of evidence that counters evolution! If they have a Biblical/Creationist world view they will be denigrated by professors and peers. You should not be surprised when they reject a Biblical/Creationist world view you thought they held, and you should not be surprised when they reject your values and instead adopt “the values of a week ago last Thursday”.

Atheism is much like locking yourself in a cave with no windows, but a door. Inside the cave there is a strong and long standing taboo about that door: Do not go near that door! Do not open that door, even just a crack!

The type of science that an atheist (mis)uses searches in all of the corners of the cave looking for God (or god if you prefer) and not finding him concludes that there is no such thing since he … it …them can’t be found in the cave. Then one day a brave soul decides to open the door to see what is outside. Outside of the cave he finds many wonderful, mysterious and interesting things, and then proceeds to seek and discover more about them and who might have created these things. He seeks answers more fully in ways … spiritual (i.e. the Bible) … in reflective thought … and by science …in examining the created things he has discovered outside of the cave.

Since God exists beyond time and space, He will never be discovered or proved using scientific methods.Dare to open the door and see what lies beyond; you may be amazed at what you find.

ATHEISM

Page 48: Did The Universe Create Itself?

But is it true?

Page 49: Did The Universe Create Itself?

DiscussionAn explanation of the Creation or Evolution of everything there is must satisfy: * The original creation of the universe * The creation of all physical laws & constants * The creation of life from non-life * The creation of mind and thought
