Ahora Más Que Nunca…La Gente Necesita Nuestra Ayuda

Dear Friends in Christ,

The Holy Father’s visit to our shores this past April was a great occasion to

celebrate our Catholic faith. Virtually every local television channel and cable news

network covered each address by Pope Benedict and every Mass he celebrated.

Such media coverage instilled in many a great sense of pride in being Catholic.

In our own neighborhood, an important way to show our Catholic pride is by

coming together as people of faith and supporting our Bishop’s Annual Appeal.

The Appeal is a tangible sign of our faith, as it supports many of our elementary

schools, our diocesan priests’ retirement residence, the education of our seminarians

and the work of our Catholic Charities agencies. Imagine the great impact we’d

have if every diocesan family participated sacrificially in some way.

Enclosed you will find information about our 2008 Appeal along with various

giving opportunities available. Please prayerfully consider making a generous gift

so that we can continue to effectively fund important ministries and serve our

brothers and sisters in Christ. Together, let us “act as beacons of hope” to God’s

people in need.

Faithfully yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Arthur J. Serratelli, S.T.D., S.S.L., D.D.

Bishop of Paterson

“The focus of our sacramental ministry should be to helppeople establish and nurture that living relationship with‘Christ Jesus, Our Hope’.”

– Pope Benedict XVIBasilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington DCApril 16, 2008

17 retired diocesan priests are currently living at Nazareth Village in Chester. Thisresidence is a well-earned option for our priests, and allows them the opportunityto live in community while continuing to celebrate Mass at parishes when possible.

How You Help: Your gift to the 2008 Bishop’s Annual Appeal allows our retiredpriests both companionship and independence. It is a wonderful way to honor thepriests who have served us and who have dedicated their lives to the Church.

“Let your faith and love bear rich fruit in outreach to the poor, the needy and those without a voice.”

– Pope Benedict XVIYankee Stadium, NYApril 20, 2008

Imagine if you tended to the various needs of 60,000 people a year—those withdisabilities; people with chemical addiction; families in need of food, counseling orafter-care; seniors requiring special assistance in their daily living. By participating inthe Bishop’s Annual Appeal, you are doing just that—and more!

How You Help: Your gift to the 2008 Bishop’s Annual Appeal provides directassistance to literally thousands of people in need each year. It is an awesomeresponsibility to care for our brothers and sisters in Christ. By giving to the Appeal,it is also a great honor.

“First and foremost every Catholic educational institution is aplace to encounter the living God who in Jesus Christ reveals histransforming love and truth.”

– Pope Benedict XVICatholic University of America, Washington DCApril 17, 2008

Over the years, many of our elementary schools have received financial support fromthe Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Especially now, this support is even more necessary sothat our schools can flourish as places where academics and evangelization meet.

How You Help: Your gift to the 2008 Bishop’s Annual Appeal provides financialassistance to many of our most needy schools. Only with your help will we be ableto serve these wonderful Catholic institutions. Your participation is urgently needed.

“Can there be any greater mark of love than this: to follow in thefootsteps of Christ, who was willing to lay down his life for his friends.”

– Pope Benedict XVIYankee Stadium, NYApril 20, 2008

Thank God, the number of seminarians preparing for priestly life in our Diocese hasincreased dramatically in recent years. These men come from the United States aswell as other countries. With this blessing of increased vocations comes the challengeto meet the increased costs associated with their formation.

How You Help: Your gift to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal enables our Diocese toprovide the best possible education for our seminarians so that they will one dayeffectively serve you, your children and your grandchildren.
