Dear school community
Boundaries with Kids –Dr Henry
Cloud & Dr John Townsend
As parents we need to parent in the present
and keep an Eye on the Future.
With this in mind , do we do whatever we do
with a clear purpose to develop character in
our kids? Most of our problems result from
our own character weaknesses.
Character refers to who the child is – their
abilities, inabilities, morality, relational
strengths and weaknesses, responsibility,
empathy, performance structures, problem
solving, coping mechanisms, habits, traits, and
talents.
What it's like to be a parent:
It's one of the hardest things you'll ever do
but in exchange
it teaches you the meaning of unconditional
love. Nicholas Sparks

Transition
Students from grades Prep to 5 will be
participating in the final whole school transition
experience on the 11th December.
For periods of this day students will spend time in
the grade level they will be progressing to in
2013.
This is to prepare our children emotionally and
socially for the demands of their upcoming
transition.
NOTE - Children will not be placed with their
future teacher for 2013.
Please see your child's teacher if you have any
questions.

How spectacular is the garden looking! Anna and the children have transformed bare beds into a lovely productive veggie patch and it will be very exciting come term 1 next year to see all the wonderful produce that will be ready to harvest. A very big thank-you to Jamie Helleren who gave up his week-end to put down the concrete slab we needed to set our new shade/hothouse on when it arrives. Your efforts are very much appreciated!
The children have been enjoying the great recipes Lil has devised for classes this term and have been having fun with all the Cooking of Christmas treats. Lil has also been very busy preparing chutneys, relishes and marmalades for our Christmas stall to be held on Carol’s Night.
I would like to extend my appreciation to Anna and Lil for all their input, expertise and hard work to make the SAKG program such a success. All the children love your classes!

Kids in the kitchen
Get your children involved in cooking
By Liliana Kotsiopoulos
The last few weeks of term have gone already and not long
until Christmas.
As I sit and write this article you will see the benefits of
eating together at the table, and also how much better is it
when the children helped cook it.
Getting the family into the kitchen can be hard work.
Everything will take more time and the mess afterwards can
be daunting for some. You will be amazed how far the
flour and mess can travel. But as well as being great fun
and a good way of bonding it's an activity with life-
changing possibilities as it was for me.
Cooking is such a huge educational tool. It’s not just about
the food or mess.
There’s measuring, reading, following a simple recipe and
there’s maths.
Cooking is fun and like most things with children it will
often work best if your children believe it was their idea.
So over the holidays why not plant some seeds in your
backyard and watch them grow, smell and turn into a
delicious dinner.
When I started cooking with the children here at Dorset
some would come along to the session with such negative
thoughts about trying something new.
As we near the end of term, I’ve seen such a big change in
what the children think of healthy eating and how you can
use a vegie in so many different ways.
This program has made a big impact on the families here at
Dorset with many lovely comments from parents and
children.
So I hope I’ve given you all some thought about including
the kids with parts of your meal preparations at home.
Best wishes for a safe and happy Christmas to all the
families at Dorset.
Kind regards
Liliana Kotsiopoulos
Thank You Afternoon Tea A great celebration for all the parents who have helped with the learning programs. It was great to see so many parents here yesterday. Again we the staff, appreciate your great efforts. Look forward to seeing you on board next year. School Council Our last meeting for the year was held last night. Thank you to all councillors for their work throughout the year. This pivotal committee of the school works exceptionally hard on formatting policy and organising the financial resources of the school. Thank you John Dousset for a great job as President of the council. A thank you function was held last night for school councillors and staff. I’m looking forward to working with School Council in 2013 to provide even greater opportunities for our children at this excellent school. Book Day Response was a little disappointing, so please attend to this matter, at your earliest convenience. If you are experiencing financial hardship please make contact with me to work out alternative arrangements. I would appreciate all booklists finalised by the end of the school year. End of Term Dismissal School will be dismissed at 1.30pm on Friday 21st December. Our final assembly will be at 9.00 am on that day. School recommences on Wednesday 30th January at 9.00am. There will be no assembly on that day. Children will go straight into their grades on the first day of school. Swimming Policy Thank you to the parents who have offered to help with formulating this policy. I will make contact shortly to commence work. I would like to present this policy to school council in February 2013. I will be approaching our uniform manufacturer to see if they can supply swimming apparel in the school colours. A hectic week - How good does the Peace Garden look! Thank you Cynthia and Jamie Helleren and family for the hard work!! Much appreciated. See you at the working bee - 5pm Regards,
