1. Until the early twentieth century there was little gender divide between men’s and women’s perfumes. Separate men’s fragrances only really came into being in the 1930s.

2. The best place for a man to apply fragrance isn’t the neck — where it evaporates quickly — but the chest, where it’s trapped against clothing and will last much longer.

3. So successful is Boss Bottled from Hugo Boss (p19) that a bottle is sold somewhere in the world every eight seconds.

4. ‘Headspace’ technology, where organic (or even inorganic materials) are placed in jars and the odour compounds are extracted with gas chromatography means almost any smell — even rain-soaked concrete — can now be captured, artificially re-created and added to fragrance.

At the turn of the twentieth century, a wealthy balloonist called Ernest Archdeacon aimed to encourage aeronautical development in France by offering a series of prizes for the first airplane flights. Much of the money ended up going to Alberto Santos-Dumont who, by 1904, was already one of the world’s most famous aviators.

Despite picking up thousands of Francs as a reward for his daring, the man known in Brazil as the ‘father of flight’ was unhappy. In order to time his journey, like most men he relied on a pocket watch, but with both hands gripping the controls of his rudimentary aeroplane he was unable to check how long he had been airborne. His friend, Louis Cartier, offered to come up with a solution…

The rest, as they say, is wristwatch history. Inspired by that first pilot watch, other manufacturers turned

their hands to creating aviation-inspired timepieces that were robust, practical and best of all, heroic. And today, the design features that defined the early aviator watches still hold true: dials and hands are strongly contrasted (white on black); thick straps (that could fit over a jacket); luminous minute markers; and all-important water resistance, in case of aquatic crash landings.

Other qualities that can be found in the latest aviation watches are propeller-themed counters (Aviator Men’s World Time Pilot Watch, p89); a rotating bezel that shows the time in 24 world cities (Citizen Eco-Drive Official Red Arrows Watch, p86); and mechanisms powered by light so you never need a battery (Citizen Eco-Drive Perpetual Chrono AT Men’s Watch, above and p86). Watches for magnificent men, even if they don’t happen to own a flying machine.

Quartz movementMost modern watches — and all digital ones — are made using a quartz movement. When charged with a battery — or in some cases from solar energy — the man-made crystal oscillates at around 32,000 times per second. These vibrations enable the watch to keep time, making them supremely accurate and reliable.

Gin and bear itWhen you think about great British spirit, you might first think of politeness or the stiff upper lip. But if you think about great British spirits, then gin must be the first word that springs to mind.

Gin made London its home in the 1600s when this juniper-favoured liquor was brought back from the Netherlands, the true home of gin. There it was a more savoury, spicy affair but when it came to London, it was sweetened using different fresh herbs like thyme and fruit peels such as lime to give it a truly refreshing feel.

Today, the gin market has exploded with new varieties being released regularly, but they all reference the classic gins of the 1800s, such as Gordon’s (p121). A true London dry distilled gin, Gordon’s is known for setting the standard by which gin is measured. Indeed, it’s the world’s best-selling London dry gin.

don’t know your whiskey from your whisky? Fear not, we’re here to help...

The English language may be spoken on both sides of the Atlantic, but you’ll often see subtle differences in the way words are spelt. One of those words, for example, is whisky, or whiskey, depending on where you are.

In the US, there’s often an ‘e’ added. Just take a look at the bottles of Jack Daniels we have onboard: Old No.7 Tennessee Whiskey (p115) is what the label says and delicious Tennessee whiskey is indeed what’s inside. But hang on. Our bottles of Johnnie Walker Black Label Blended Scotch Whisky (p113) don't have the ‘e’, on the front. Why is this? Where did the ‘e’ go, and does this make the drink any different? Well, yes and no: both are still whisk(e)y by definition, but one is a Tennessee whiskey and one is a blended Scotch whisky. So what’s the difference?

Well, Tennessee whiskey is made mainly from corn, with a small percentage of rye and malted barley.

Once the spirit is produced, it is then filtered through charcoal, a part of the production known as the ‘Lincoln County process’. For Jack Daniels this involves passing their liquor through 10 feet of sugar maple charcoal. The spirit is then matured in brand new American white oak barrels to give a full, sweet flavour and rich, deep colour. Or should that be color?

Not every whiskey that comes out of America uses the ‘e’ (most do) but in Scotland every distiller there must use the spelling that omits the ‘e’. Law dictates that all Scotch whisky must be produced in Scotland, and Johnnie Walker is no different. This expression expertly blends together malt whiskies made from just barley, which have both rich malty flavours and some smoky hints, with grain whisky made from corn, adding elements of vanilla and heather to the mix; all produced in Scotland, and all without a single use of the letter ‘e’.
