GIARRATANo MAKeS HISToRY
CAPTAIN AMeRICA: Junior pitcher Kyle Zimmer was named a second team All-American in Baseball America’s college preseason poll. The right-hander became the first San Francisco Don to be named a preseason All-American since Tagg Bozied in 2000. The La Jolla, CA native burst onto the national scene last season when he outdueled then No. 12 UCLA and phenom Gerrit Cole, shutting out the Bruins, 3-0, while striking out 11 in the first game of the NCAA Los Angeles Re-gional. Zimmer four-hit the Bruins and walked none to propel the Dons to their first Regional win since 2006.
This year, Zimmer is 0-1 in four starts largely due to the fact that he was on a strict pitch count in his first three starts. However, Zimmer owns a sterling 25-to-1 strike-out-to-walk ratio, in addition to a gaudy .213 batting average against.
SCoUTING THe AGGIeS: UC Davis enters this series 8-8 (.500) on the year. First-year Head Coach Matt Vaughn earned his first victory on Opening Day against Utah, win-ning 3-0. Most recently, UC Davis took two of three from Seattle University at Dobbins Stadium. Kevin Barker leads all hitters with an impressive .389 batting average.
LAST TIMe VS. USF: The last meeting between UC Davis and USF came in a double header on 2/27/11 and went the Dons way in both contests, 6-2 and 8-4 in the second game. In fact, USF owns the advantage over the last three seasons, going 5-1 in six contests.

SCoUTING THe RAINBoWS: Mike Trapasso led the Rain-bows to a 17-7 first place finish in the WAC last year. Ha-waii enters the series against USF with a solid 11-6 record behind leading hitter Pi’ikea Kitamura (.339) and starters Jarrett Arakawa (2-0, 1.63) and Scott Squier (3-1, 3.18)
LAST TIMe VS. USF: The last meeting between USF and Hawaii came on 2/24/08 when The Dons won, 11-3. The two teams split the four-game series, 2-2. Hawaii won the first two games, while USF took the last two by a combined score of 17-8, winning game three, 6-5, then pounding Ha-waii in the finale, 11-3.
JUSTIN’S TIMe: College of San Mateo junior transfer Justin Maffei has been the Diamond Dons hottest hitter thus far. The center fielder ranks first on the team in hits (20), runs (12), dou-bles (4), home runs (2), slugging pct. (.536), on-base pct. (.507), and steals (6). Maffei also ranks within the top 10 in the WCC in multiple categories including batting average (.357 - 10th), slugging (6th), on-base pct. (2nd), runs (8th), doubles (T-6th), home runs (2 - T-2nd) total bases (30 - 6th), walks (12 - T-4th) , hit by pitch (5 - T-2nd), stolen bases (6 - T-1st).
SeeING CLeARLY: Third baseman Adam Clear is currently rid-ing a 10-game hitting streak entering the Thursday tilt against Hawaii. In his last 10 games, Clear is 18-for-36 (.500), includ-ing five multi-hit games. During the streak, Clear has three doubles, two RBIs, and five bases on balls. Prior to the hitting streak, the Novato, CA native was just 4-for-26 (.153). However, since February 28 against California, Clear has improved his batting average a ridiculous .170 points to .323.
ARMS RACe: The Dons’ team ERA of 2.65 (44er, 149.2ip) in 2012, ranks 3rd in the WCC. The Dons’ 134 strikeouts are tied for first in the Conference with San Diego. USF’s 134-to-45 strikeout-to-walk ratio also ranks first. USF has five pitchers with an ERA lower than 2.00 that have thrown at least 10.0 in-nings this season. In addition, USF’s staff is holding opponents to a stingy .230 batting average against.
AMAZING ABe: Redshirt sophomore Abe Bobb (3-1, 2.00 ERA) has been excellent as the Saturday starter. Bobb’s three wins, four starts, and 27.0 innings pitched all rank first on the team. Bobb has gone at least seven innings in three of his four starts, including his most recent 7.2-inning effort against Fresno State. Bobb’s 2.00 ERA ranks 7th in the WCC and his 27.0 in-nings pitched ranks 8th. Bobb’s three wins are tied for third in the conference and his 21 strikeouts are tied for 10th place.
FIRST TIMe FoR eVeRYTHING: Four-year senior Mason Mo-rioka entered the 2012 season without a collegiate home run to his name. That all changed on Opening Day, as Morioka took a 2-1 pitch from San Jose State reliever Kyle Hassna deep over the left field fence in the top of the ninth, to lengethen the Dons lead to 4-0. Morioka’s first collegiate homer traveled approximately 400ft and landed in the adjacent softball field on San Jose State’s campus. Morioka hit his second homer of the year, a solo shot, against Missouri, launching a 1-1 offering 60 feet up the left field netting with encapsulates Benedetti Diamond. Morioka’s two homers are tied for second in the WCC.
H20 BoY: Junior reliever Elliott Waterman has been stellar for the Dons in 2012, recording two wins and two saves, which rank second and first on the team, respectively. Waterman earned a win and a save in two consecutive games against Missouri and owns a gaudy 1.50 ERA and a perfect 15-to-0 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 12.0 innings pitched. Waterman’s seven appearances are also tied for second on the team.
ZIMMeR BRoS.: Junior pitcher Kyle Zimmer is joined this year by his younger brother, Bradley, who has started in 15 of the Dons’ 17 games this year. The Zimmer brothers are one of two brother tandems on the team, joining the Balog duo. Both Zimmers played their high school ball at La Jolla High School in San Diego, California. Bradley’s bat has started to heat up recently as the RF has upped his batting average significantly over the last two weeks. The freshman is now hitting .241 (13-for-54) with two doubles.
