Although there are some hematologic conditions that pediatricians may treat as part of their primary care practice, children may present with symptoms that require the involvement or consultation of pediatric specialists. Additionally, many oncologic conditions mimic other non-malignant pediatric conditions, and it is essential for pediatric providers to streamline their differential diagnosis when subtle signs of a more serious illness arise. Lastly, children who present to their providers during and after the conclusion of treatment may have health care needs that are different from their peers. Attendance at the symposium will offer participants an opportunity to update their knowledge regarding the diagnosis and management of the most common hematologic and oncologic problems, as well as the care of childhood cancer survivors. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to: • Evaluate common hematologic and oncologic problems in pediatric and adolescent patients • Discuss current diagnostic and treatment guidelines when patients present with hem/onc symptoms • Apply appropriate management and treatment for each diagnosis • Identify patients requiring referral for specialty services Target Audience This educational program is designed for Healthcare and other professionals involved in management of trauma patients/systems including: • Pediatricians; pediatric nurse practitioners • Family physicians and NP’s • Emergency room MDs, PAs, and NPs • Medical residents and fellows • Medical social workers • Any other health care professionals interested in the diagnosis and care of children CME Accreditation Statement This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Accreditation Requirements and Polices of the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) through the joint providership of the Westchester Academy of Medicine and Westchester Medical Center.
