SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES

• Increase in hunger and thirst

• Unexplained weight loss• Frequent urination• Tingling of feet and hands • Low energy• Persistently high blood

glucose

Although these are the classicsymptoms, there may be no

warning signs!

UNDERSTANDING INSULIN

• Hormone produced in pancreas for getting glucose (sugar) into the cells for energy for the body

• When body overwhelmed by too much sugar, insulin cannot be produced fast enough to process it and the body becomes glucose-intolerant

TYPE I DIABETES

• Classic form of diabetes– Traditionally diagnosed in

children or young adults – usually by age 30

– Often considered to be genetic

– Body does not produce insulin

– Body’s immune system destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas

– Also known as “juvenile onset”

TYPE II DIABETES• Type II represents 90-95% • Can be present in children• Pre-diabetes also increases

risk of heart disease.• Gestational diabetes

– About 4% of pregnancies– Increases complications for

mother and child.• Generally manifests later in

life and may have a nutritional origin

UNCONTROLLED DIABETES

• May damage nerves– Foot problems – Can lead to the need for

amputation• Body more vulnerable to:

– Skin infections– Eye diseases– Heart disease– Kidney infections– High blood pressure

• May bring on insulin resistance syndrome (metabolic syndrome)

make dietary changes and exercise regularly

INFECTIONS

• INFECTIONS raise blood sugar• Must check levels every 4

hours• Check for ketones• Check temperature• Don’t stop taking insulin• Oral meds might have to stop

EXERCISE

• Moderate is best– Takes up glucose at almost

20 times the normal rate to lower blood sugar level!

• Intense exercise can have the opposite effect and actually increase blood glucose levels – especially for diabetics

STRENGTH TRAINING• Strength training has profound

effects • 16 weeks of strength training

produced dramatic improvement in sugar control comparable to taking medication.
