Route Planning

Advance Features

Page 15: DhiLogics Transportation Management System

Route Optimization Route optimization does a Transportation Network Analysis to

create an optimized shipment plan by using the selected trips and the shipments. There are different parameters that are used in determining the best optimal routes for vehicles for delivering the shipments on time.

Cost Analysis Gives a complete cost analysis of shipment plan. For each

shipment it gives the details of transportation cost share, warehouse cost, load/unload cost etc.

It allows to do a What-if analysis by allowing to modifying the parameters and rerunning the routing plan creation. Users can come up with the best cost effective plan using the cost analysis module.

Consider your company has shipments lying in multiple locations. They should be delivered to multiple destinations. Some of the shipments pass through various Transhipment points.

Manually planning the trip for each packet will be a laborious task. There are multiple parameters that needs to be considered like shipment type, weight/volume of the shipment, available capacity of the vehicle, average speed etc.

Planning module takes all the shipments and trips and then generate a complete end to end trip plan for each of the shipment. It considers above mentioned parameters in coming up with an optimal plan by reducing the cost, increasing the yield and by increasing the customer satisfaction by trying to deliver the shipments on time for the customer.

Planning helps you to increase the utilization and revenue by identifying the underutilized vehicles and segments before hand and plan for co-loading or market vehicles.

Planning helps you to find gaps in your planned trips for better delivery of your shipments and helps you to take necessary actions.

How it helps?

Margin Analysis

Advance Feature 2

Page 19: DhiLogics Transportation Management System

Why and when to do a operational cost analysis?

In a highly competitive industry like logistics every paisa saved matters

Identifying and predicting loss making routes help in course correction

Analyzing your route margins at the earliest helps you reduce the cost.

Fully understanding the Transhipment costs is essential for running a successful hub and spoke model

Page 20: DhiLogics Transportation Management System

What are the current Problems faced?

Accuracy Most operations manager roughly estimate the margins for each

trip. This need not be accurate.

Complexity: With additional trans shipment points, calculating margins

become more difficult and less accurate

This becomes even more complex with increasing fleet size

Delay in Course Correction: Course correction is mostly reactive and not predictive. i.e. The

management will be aware of a loss making route only after running the route for some time. In India this is typically identified in 6-8 months. This drains already low margin business.

MATH behind DhiLogics TMS

Revenue is spread across the distance travelled by the cargo.

If a cargo worth INR 1000.00 travels 100 km, revenue generated for each km is INR 10.00.

Cost is divided into multiple layers

Cost per Mile for Company of Vehicle or Market Price for Market/Contract vehicle is used for calculating the cost

Additional costs like Loading/Unloading charges, Warehousing charges etc. are considered for each Transhipment. This can be different for different locations.

Pickup/Delivery costs are applied

How it works?

Page 29: DhiLogics Transportation Management System

Consider you have around 2000 packets that needs to be delivered or picked up from different locations. You have around 10 vehicles

Manually planning the number of vehicles required and the route for each vehicle and planning these 2000 packets to these vehicles will be time taking process

DhiLogics Router does this in a single click in producing an optimal plan using minimum vehicles and thus saving TIME, FUEL and COST

Common Issues with missing cargo

Most common issue a transportation company faces is the case of “missing” cargos

There could be many reasons for this. The graph highlights some of the common reasons and percentage of occurrence.

Page 34: DhiLogics Transportation Management System

The causes - Why it happens ?

Mishandling

•Errors while loading and unloading

•Miscommunication

•Incorrect data entry

•No end to end data visibility or tracking

Theft

•Theft of High Value Items

• No system to pinpoint the last known position

• No end to end tracking

Lack of Planning

•Not Data Driven Planning

•Manually organized leading to errors

•No checks or validations

•Lack of management

•Person dependent

Others

•Lack of training

•Time constraints

Implemented by handling design of Supply Chain Exceptions

Most software depends on point to point movements and updates on the packets for tracking.

We forecast the movements through the hubs and record the updates. Hence any missed transactions at the shipment level will be alerted at the hubs.

CHENNAITrip 1 - Vehicle 1

Trip 2 - Vehicle 2

XLoad

LR# - 1234Pune to Chennai

LR# - 1234Pune to Chennai

LR# 1234 is from Pune to Chennai. As per the original plan, LR is shipped to Bangalore in Vehicle 1 and from Bangalore to Chennai in Vehicle 2. In the above scenario the package is unloaded in Bangalore and not loaded into the Vehicle 2.

Un Load Load

Page 40: DhiLogics Transportation Management System

How Is IT WORKING ?

Other TMS

Data is logged after the event. i.e. Once the shipment is loaded, only then the TMS is updated

Difficult to track the exact position of the cargo

High probability of manual error - Loaded not recorded, Unloaded but not recorded etc.

NO DATA NO ACTION

DhiLogics TMS

End to End scheduling can be done in advance

What needs to be loaded & what needs to be unloaded is driven by system generated Load sheets

If the shipment does not reach the exact destination alerts and messages will be triggered

DATA DRIVEN DECISION
