Williams sisters fly high in tech industryBy ED MCMENAMIN

[email protected]

DOWNERS GROVE – CassidyWilliams will step onto a jet in SanFrancisco on June 12 and, along with99 computers programmers and techleaders gathered by British Airways, collaborate to find solutions to globalproblems by the time the plane landsin London.

Brainstorming with forward-think-ing tech industry CEOs 30,000 feetabove ground is just one in a longline of enviable opportunities she andyounger sister Cami have pursued asundergraduate students at Iowa StateUniversity.

When she returns from her flight,Cassidy, 21, will continue working onApple applications as an intern for In-tuit, the company that makes Quick-en and other software. Cami, 18, willspend her summer in Seattle, interningfor Microsoft, where Cassidy also pre-viously interned.

Cassidy set the initial, ambitioustone for the pair in eighth grade whenshe started working on her first web-site. Since then, they have been muchthe equals traveling to conferences andeven recently speaking at the WhiteHouse.

“It’s definitely a collaborative effortwhen we go in to talk to companies,”Cami said. “We kind of go in as a pack-aged deal.”

Their interests blossomed at Down-ers Grove South High School – wherethey took as many computer scienceand math courses as they could, theysaid – and continued at Iowa State Uni-versity, where the two are both heavilyinvolved on campus.

Cami will be a sophomore in the fall. She said that so far, she still is explor-ing all components of computer sci-ence, from the back-end architectureof a system to the front-end user-face of

a piece of software. Cassidy, who willbe a senior next year, is focused on the

front-end – building intuitive and us-able software and apps for consumers.

Whichever paths they choose, both

sisters could write courses in network-

ing.

Cassidy schedules lunches with just

about any company she can while in

Silicon Valley.A recent meeting with Google

scored her a spot to explore its high-ly anticipated computer eye glasses –Google Glass.

Just a freshman, it was Cami’s te-

nacity with Microsoft recruiters that

landed her the summer gig designing

apps for the Microsoft phone.

After undergrad, Cassidy said she’s

leaning toward going straight into the

workforce, although she is considering

graduate school.“I want to be able to make money

and make a difference out there and ap-ply what I know now to something thatwill matter,” she said.

Village looks toward pedestrian-friendly improvementsBy ED MCMENAMIN

[email protected]

D O W N E R S G R O V E –Downers Grove took a newlook at possible goals andprojects to make the villagemore friendly for bicyclistsand pedestrians in the shortand long term.

Public Works DirectorNaneil Newlon presented up-dated Bicycle and PedestrianPlans at the May 21 councilmeeting, the result of surveys, studies, public outreach andother efforts by the village.

The study found residentsthink Downers Grove is walk-able, in general, but that railcrossings and major trafficintersections do pose difficul-ties, among other issues.

To address that issue, oneof the long-term recommenda-tions for the council is to eval-uate the feasibility of a sepa-rated pedestrian crossings atLee Street, the downtown andthe railroad.

Short-term recommen-dations include creating abicycle and pedestrian taskforce, completing the network

of signed routes, increasingbicycle parking in the down-town, instituting a bicyclerack request system, and cre-ating a plan to beautify pedes-trian spaces and corridors inthe downtown.

Medium-term recommen-dations include identifyingfunding and locations for ex-panded bicycle parking at thecommuter stations, complet-ing the sidewalk network forat least one side of the streetand installing count-down in-dicators on existing high-pri-ority traffic signals.

“I’m excited about the re-port,” Councilman Bob Bar-nett said. “There’s a lot inhere that I think is an awe-some starting point for, frank-ly, bigger council discussionsabout policy.”

The plan had its first read-ing May 21, and Mayor Mar-tin Tully said it probablywill have another workshopsession before moving to theconsent agenda for a vote at alater date. Approving the planwould not approve launchingall the projects therein – staffstill would need council ap-

proval for any individual proj-ect costing more than $15,000.

Tully praised the plan andthe appeal that walkable andbike-friendly communitieshave for younger profession-als.

“This actually does haveeconomic-development as-pects to it,” he said. “We hearthat in order to attract highquality businesses to locate inDowners Grove … we need toprovide amenities that attractthe kind of workforce thatthose companies seek to havenearby.”

As Memorial Day is the unoicial

start of summer, the warm

sunny air

draws millions

of adults and

children outside.

Recreational

activities such

as use of music

concerts,

irecrackers,

power tools, irearms, NASCAR,

sporting events, and motorcycles

have one thing in common:

noise. While noise itself isn’t bad,

excessively loud noise is bad for

the hearing.

Warning signs from noise:

• You hear ringing or buzzing

in your ears ater exposure to

noise.

• You notice that you can hear

people talking but you have

diiculty understanding them

ater exposure to noise.

• You experience “fullness” in

your ears ater leaving a noisy

area.

Even though you may have

experienced these symptoms in

the past, your hearing might not

always “recover”, leaving you with

a permanent hearing loss. hese

types of hearing losses typically

show up several years ater the

noise exposure.

What you can do to protect your

hearing:

• With recreational activities that

have loud noise levels, wear ear

protection such as earplugs.

Earplugs come in custom or

non-custom styles. Non-custom

type foam plugs are available

at pharmacies and at hearing

clinics. Custom earplugs with

specialized attenuation ilters

are available at a hearing clinic.

• Limit exposure to noisy

activities around the home.

Children and adults using

personal listening devices such

as iPods, MP3 players that

use earbuds should have their

devices monitored for loudness

levels. A key test for unsafe

listening levels from earbuds

or headphones is if someone

is able to overhear the wearer’s

music, then most likely the

listening level is too loud.

Hearing loss from noise is

preventable. Monitor your

hearing and be aware of

potentially loud noises. If you

experience any of the above

symptoms or have questions, call

our oice.

Regas, a former longtimekindergarten teacher at BelleAire, was described by friendsand family as someone whoalways was ready for guests.Whether it was for the groupof high school friends she keptclose with for 50 years, herfriends from work who metregularly in a book club or foran impromptu gathering overa glass of wine in the living

room, the house always wasopen, Oakley said.

Regas also shared her loveof plants and flowers with herstudents at Belle Aire, whereshe taught for more than 20years. Sometime during hertenure, she added a readinggarden on the school grounds,a favorite place for students tolearn outdoors.

In the six years after herretirement in 2007, the gardenslowly lost its luster withouther care and maintenance.

Regas died this winter atage 70 after a battle with can-cer.

Since, family, friends, col-leagues and former studentsraised money to revamp thegarden space she once loved.Because of their efforts, it hasnew benches, a plaque in herhonor, freshly laid rock andlandscaped plants.

The school hosted a rib-bon-cutting for the revampedgarden last month at a teach-er-appreciation luncheon.

Oakley, who still teaches atthe school, and other teachersbring their students to the gar-den on a weekly basis, whenweather complies.

PARESTHESIA

Q: What is paresthesia?

A: Paresthesia is the name for the condition

in which skin feels tingly and numb. Think

“pins and needles.” It occurs most commonly

in the hands and feet, the feeling we sometimes

describe as your foot “falling asleep.” It can also

occur around the mouth as a numbness in the

chin, cheek, lip or tongue that may set in after a

dental procedure that requires anesthesia. It most

commonly occurs in the lower jaw after removal

of a wisdom tooth. It can happen after any

difficult tooth extraction, and sometimes after

even a relatively routine, non-surgical procedure.

The condition is generally temporary, but can

go on for a few weeks or months. Paresthesia

can cause a loss of feeling in the lip or tongue,

the result sometimes being drooling and

accidental biting of the lip or tongue. It can

change taste and temperature sensations in the

mouth. Patients having wisdom teeth surgery

are more susceptible to the condition. The

cause is generally injury to a nerve, usually the

mandibular or lower jaw nerve. Several studies

have found also that the type of anesthesia used

may be linked to subsequent paresthesia.

Whispering attorneyWhen I watch La Grange

Park Village board meetings, the president always has theattorney whispering somethingin his ear that the rest of theresidents and probably boardmembers can’t hear. It doesn’thappen with La Grange’s meet-ings. The attorney, when he’shad something to say, says itand everybody can hear it. Thismakes it seem like secretivethings are going on. I’d liketo see this stop in La GrangePark; let us hear everything theattorney is saying. DuPage voters left outIllinois House Bill Number 1522,

referred to in the May 22 Report-er, has now passed both houses

of Illinois General Assembly. The bill gives Peoria County andDuPage County the power tolevy and collect taxes and feesfrom residents to pay for storm-water improvements in thesetwo counties. The bill also givesreferendum power to approveor reject such fees or taxes toPeoria County voters, but notto DuPage County voters. StateSen. James Oberweis preparedand offered Senate amendmentnumber 2 to giveDuPage County taxpayers thesame referendum power asthose in Peoria County. TheOberweis amendment wasstripped from the bill prior tothe final vote. Evidently, DuPageCounty taxpayers are notintelligent or worthy enough toapprove their own taxation, butPeoria County voters are.

Statistics show that students in the U.S. have fallen behindtheir peers worldwide when it comes to achievement in science.

This deficit is impairing our ability to compete globally andto develop innovative solutions to worldwide challenges, such asgenerating new sources of energy.

That’s why at District 99,we’re bringing in the Legorobots.

The District 99 EducationFoundation, which is spear-headed by community volun-teers, just provided my depart-ment with a generous grant topurchase robotics kits, which use Legos as building blocks. Thesekits are no toys, though: they will serve as a seriously sophisticat-ed and powerful learning resource for all of our students.

Using the kits in their physics classes, students will designphysical robots and circuitry that runs the robots, and use com-puter program algorithms to have the robots perform tasks. Thiswill give our students new experiences and opportunities to exper-iment with engineering design, computer coding and electronics.

The kits are just one example of how District 99 is addressingthe new science standards called “Next Generation Science Stan-dards” (NGSS), which will raise a student’s level of analysis andcritical thinking, and opportunities to learn engineering designand development.

On April 9, the final edition of the standards was released.NGSS will replace state standards that have been in place for 15years – well before the explosion of the Internet.

In District 99, curriculum to align with NGSS is expected to beadopted in the 2014-15 school year.

NGSS will significantly improve science education and studentachievement across our nation – and make major changes to theway that science is taught. The performance expectations empha-size the process of “doing” science, a change from the past whenteachers lectured and students memorized.

We will be arming students with skills for the “real world,”such as asking questions, defining problems, analyzing and inter-preting data and communicating.

Thinking as a scientist does, I predict that NGSS will revolu-tionize the way our students learn, and ultimately ensure thatthey – and our country – can enjoy a brighter future.

A more than 20-year-old court ruling has been a cause for concern

DOOR-TO-DOOR SOLICITATION

During summer months, the Police Department receives an increase in

door and attempts to sell any goods or services. This includes items such as

magazine subscription, cleaning products, or candy. It also includes persons

seeking contributions (money, financial assistance, etc) that represent charitable

or religious organizations, scout troops, school groups, or other nonprofit groups.

Any person who solicits in the Village must first register at the Village by

completing an application form and being issued a solicitation permit.

All Solicitors must:

• Wear their Village-issued identification cards on their outer garments.

• Honor “No Soliciting” signs when prominently displayed near the main

entrance to the premises.

• Leave the premises when requested to do so.

• Indicate the purpose of their visit and not misrepresent that their purpose is

other than to solicit.

Commercial solicitors (selling goods or services for profit) may solicit Monday

through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Non-commercial solicitors (selling good

or services not for profit such as scout groups or school groups) may solicit from

9 a.m. to 9 p.m., including weekends and holidays.

Restaurant reviews

HINSDALE – From itsmenu of upscale Mexican fareand its vibrant atmospheredown to its colorful logo:What you see is what you getat CiNe, a modern Mexicantaqueria that’s as energizingas it is delicious.

My companion and I madeour destination downtownHinsdale on a recent Friday.Venturing along the village’shills and dream homes was atreat en route to the restau-rant, but stepping inside was abreath of fresh air after a weekfull of work.

The front façade of CiNepays homage to the originaltheater, with an awningprotruding over a downtownsidewalk and a small row ofoutdoor seating. The colorful,lit-up CiNe logo graces the aw-ning, letting incoming patronsknow just what to expect uponentrance.

The interior transportsguests to a Miami-like atmo-sphere – it’s colorful, yet easyon the eyes and modern, butjust warm and cozy enough.

Much like you would find atother Mexican fare restaurants,

the chips and salsa were com-plimentary and were broughtimmediately by our waiter, who greeted us with a smileand kind introduction, as well.

The salsa was a pleasantsurprise, having just enoughkick for my satisfaction, butnot enough to deter my com-panion with more sensitivetastebuds.

Picking up the menu, pa-trons are given options typicalof Mexican eateries – quesadil-las and tostadas as appetizers, tacos, fajitas and enchiladas forentrees – but each with its ownlittle twist courtesy of the chef.

Then there are the moreunique dishes, including theFilete a la Tomatillo, a hangersteak marinated in guajillo andagave, accompanied by roastedpotatoes. One of three Chef’sSpecials was the Sarandeado,a smoked walleye over potatopuree served with a relish.

CiNe offers an extensivelist of wine, cocktail and beeroptions.

For an appetizer, mycompanion and I couldn’t passon the Carnitas Quesadillas, made with slow braised pork

and topped with a trio of tastysauces. We each downed twoportions of the appetizer, making for just enough of aprelude to our meal along withthe chips and salsa.

The gem of the menu, though, is the taco selection.Patrons can combine any fourtypes from traditional optionssuch as pastor pork, chickenflautas and skirt steak, to albon-diga – a type of meatball – and

vegetariano, potato croquettesalong with relish, sour creamand queso fresco.

I opted for two each of thepastor and skirt steak tacos, taking a stronger liking to thelatter.

My companion went withthe enchiladas, and she enjoyedthe juicy and flavorful shreddedchicken. A creamy Mexicanrice put the dish over the topand had me convinced that

would be my next meal at CiNe.There wasn’t any room for

dessert, but the waiter offereda chocolate taco rendition thathad us thinking twice.

Show goes on for founder of Village Theatre GuildBy RENEE TOMELL

[email protected]

When Sue Keenan got herstart on stage in high schoolplays, she had no idea she’dgo on to help found VillageTheatre Guild of Glen Ellyn, acommunity theater institutionabout to cap its 50th seasonwith the edgy hit play “NextFall.”

“I saw it in New York whenit was nominated for a [2010]Tony,” says the Glen Ellynresident. “I loved it so much Ibrought it back and gave it to[the] guild to read. It’s very dif-ferent and such a good play.”

It’s not a show she thinksmany community theaterswould be comfortable under-taking.

“It is a gay theme,” Keenanexplains. “It’s a beautiful,thought-provoking play. After

it’s over, you can’t stop talkingabout it, which is what I con-sider good theater.”

New York is familiar terri-tory to Keenan, who majoredin theater in college.

“In the ’50s, I went to NewYork to be afamous actress,”she recalls witha gentle laugh.“I did televisionbit parts – under5s. [It means]under five lines. Those were thedays of live TV.

I was a on a soap opera for awhile, [where] I had more thanfive lines. Then I got marriedand we moved out here.”

Back in 1963, Keenanwas part of the group wholaunched VTG, initiallyputting on shows in churchand school settings. A year

later, they were renting aformer one-room schoolhouse, first from the school boardand then a new owner, GulfOil, which awaited a zoningchange to convert the propertyinto a gas station.

When the zoning changefell through, VTG was ableto secure a two-year loan andbuy the property for its per-manent home in the 1970s. Thesale of one acre of the land got

them out of the red.“We thought we wouldn’t

make it through the [theater’svery] first year, [but] once wegot the building we felt goodabout it,” says Keenan, whoin the intervening years hasbeen part of just about everyproduction, whether it’s act-ing, directing, stage managing, props or ushering.

She’s producing the cur-rent play, and will direct next

January’s show. Her day job business is

“Run Around Sue,” a personalconcierge for errands.

Play’s plot pointsSex and religion are the

intellectual focus of “NextFall,” about the relationshipbetween the agnostic Adamand Luke, a fundamentalistChristian hospitalized after anaccident. Flashbacks tell theirstory.

“This introspective playchallenges us to ask ques-tions about the nature of ourcommitments and faith,” saysdirector Jim Liesz of GlenEllyn. “As you are being com-fortably entertained, you growto realize how elusive theanswers are when it comes tomorals, values, what it meansto believe, and what it mightcost not to.”

Downers Grove South players celebrate Saturday in Hinsdale after beating Waubonsie Valley 4-1 to claim a regional title.

North vs. SouthBy JASON ROSSI

[email protected]

HINSDALE – Forget GreenBay. Downers Grove canstake its claim as Titletown.

The baseball teams fromDowners Grove North andDowners Grove South joinedtheir softball counterparts asregional champions on Sat-urday. North topped MeteaValley 6-5 in nine innings towin the Class 4A Oswego re-gional while South defeatedWaubonsie Valley 4-1 to takethe title at Hinsdale Central.

It was South’s first re-gional title since 2011 andNorth’s first since 2007, andit set up a sectional semifinalshowdown between the twoteams. The Mustangs toppedthe Trojans 7-3 in early May

thanks in large part to eightNorth errors, but the playoffmatchup is a whole new af-fair.

“We’re probably going tosee a different pitcher fromthem, and they’re going tosee a different pitcher fromus,” South coach Darren Orelsaid. “You don’t put a wholelot of stock into that game.I know they didn’t play well

defensively like they are ca-pable of doing.”

North coach Chad Isaac-son has had one message forhis team all season, and itdoesn’t change no matter thegame or opponent.

“We’ve got to take care ofour own business,” he said.“We’ve got to be able to dowhat we do in order to win.Every team you play fromhere on out has proved thatthey belong and has earnedit, so you throw the recordsout the window.”

Ray Greco singled homeMatt Zabloudil in the bottomof the ninth to deliver North’sregional title. Metea scoredfour times in the fifth to takea 5-3 lead, but North (21-11)scored twice in the sixth.

Brian Glowicki pitched a

complete game and allowedjust one earned run in thetop of the seventh as theMustangs won their region-al. South’s 5-6-7 hitters – MattZinnecker, Alex Galik andJavier Martinez – combinedto go 5-of-8 with two runs andthree RBIs.

Both teams practicedMonday to get ready forWednesday’s game, withboth coaches respecting theopponent.

“Downers Grove Southis as good as any team in thestate,” Isaacson said. “We haveto play well, and that’s it.”

“We’ll go out and battleas hard as we can, and hope-fully the team that plays thebest wins,” Orel said. “Thedownside of it is that one ofus has to lose.”

an Gockman’s single plated arun in the sixth to give pitch-er Elaine Heflin all the supportshe needed. Heflin struck out 17and pitched a no-hitter. An in-field error was the only blemishfor the Trojans’ (25-8) defense.

The regional title win wasespecially sweet for Heflin, Car-olyn Nojiri, Brittany Nagy and

Madeline Wojciak, who werepart of the last regional titleteam as freshmen but are theleaders of the current team asseniors.

The regional win set up ashowdown with Benet in a sec-tional semifinal. The two teamsnormally play each other inthe regular season but had thisyear’s clash canceled due toweather. It will be the first timeHeflin’s power pitching goesagainst Benet’s prolific offense.

“I told the girls to enjoy (theregional win), but also that wehave bigger goals in mind,”Magro said. “We’ve never wona sectional game. Benet shouldbe a good matchup because a lotof the girls know each other sowell.”

New view North’s Zabloudil emerges as standoutcatcher after working in bullpen last year

By JASON [email protected]

D O W N E R S G R O V E –Crouching down behind homeplate gives Matt Zabloudil amuch different view than heexperienced last spring.

The Downers Grove Northsenior catcher was primarilythe Trojans’ bullpen catcherlast spring as three-year var-sity starter Pat Lowry com-manded a spot in the startinglineup.

Zabloudil bided his timeand earned his chance thisspring, and he’s made thetransition to full-time catcherlook easy.

“I new it would be bigshoes to fill, especially be-cause it’s kind of a new thingfor me,” Zabloudil said. “ButI’ve worked with good coach-es so when I got to varsity itmade it a little easier.”

To be sure, there is noth-ing really easy about being acatcher. There are the bumpsand bruises from foul ballsand blocking pitches in the

dirt. There’s calling pitchesand defensive assignments, and there’s the inherentleadership role that comeswith the position. Zabloudilhasn’t fallen short in any ofhis duties.

“I knew he’d be capable,”

North coach Chad Isaacsonsaid. “He’s a kid that couldhave started for us last year, but he had a three-year starterin front of him.”

A starter on the fresh-man and sophomore teams, the 2012 summer season was

Zabloudil’s introduction tovarsity baseball, and Isaac-son didn’t hesitate giving himthe full load. Zabloudil wascalling pitches, calling out de-fensive plays, controlling op-ponents’ running games and, most importantly, building abond with the pitchers thatwould form the backbone ofthe rotation. That latter partwas an extension of some-thing that started during thespring season.

“The great thing about be-ing the bullpen catcher is thatyou get to work with a lot ofthe guys every day,” Zabloud-il said.

Isaacson lauded Zabloud-il’s ability to receive the ball, meaning he does a superb jobstopping balls high and lowand to either side of the plate. The coach also said Zabloudilcontrols the base paths with agood throwing arm and gen-erally takes command of thegame. That he is also one ofthe Trojans’ leading hitters interms of average is a bonus.

This spring is Zabloudil’slast donning the catchinggear. In the fall, he will be thethird generation of his familyto attend Villanova Universi-ty, where he will study busi-ness and accounting with thehopes of one day working inthe front office for a sportsfranchise. With that in mind,he’s relished every moment ofhis senior season.

“Senior year, it’s been ablast. I wouldn’t change any-thing,” Zabloudil said. “Thebiggest thing I wanted to dowas go out there and have fun. It’s a great group of guys andI’ve enjoyed every day withthem.”

Timreck powers Mustangs to regional title

By JASON [email protected]

DOWNERS GROVE - Nick Tim-reck just did what he’d done allseason long.

W h e n D o w n -ers Grove South’sboys volleyballteam needed a bigpoint or a defen-sive stop, the se-nior was there ashe helped the Mus-tangs top Glen-bard West 23-25,25-20, 25-13 in a re-gional championship match May22 at South.

The Hilltoppers won the firstgame and threatened to pull awayin the second game, but Timreckhelped turn the momentum in theMustangs’ (25-11) favor.

He served three points to turna 7-6 deficit into a 9-6 lead. WhenWest seemed to seize a little mo-mentum with a sideout that madeit 14-11 later in the game, he had

back-to-back kills to pad the lead. And in the third game, he had akill and two block-kills as theMustangs’ 9-7 lead swelled to 16-7during David DeMarco’s servicerun.

“Nick has been that way allyear long,” South coach KurtSteuer said. “He’s someone werely on and the guys put a lot offaith in him that he’ll be able toput the ball down almost everytime he touches. He’s a leader onthe court and someone we love tohave.”

The win not only deliveredSouth’s first regional title since2011 but also made a longtimedream become a reality for Tim-reck.

“It’s awesome. We had a bit-tersweet loss in the regional fi-nals last year, but this year it’sjust awesome. It feels amazing,”he said. “It’s the way I’ve alwaysimagined it since I started playingfreshman year. I always wanted towin a regional championship onour home floor, and we did it.”

Injury-plagued Trojans make earlyplayoff exit after fast season start

By JASON [email protected]

DOWNERS GROVE –Downers Grove North’sboys volleyball teamedroared out of the gate witha 12-0 record to start theseason, but then injuriestook a heavy toll.

After the hot start anddealing with the injuries, the Trojans played around.500 and the season endedwith a 14-25, 25-17, 25-18loss to Wheaton Warren-ville South in a regionalsemifinal game May 21.

“It was like we tookone step forward and onestep back all season afterour start,” North coachMark Wasik said. “Onceour schedule started heat-ing up is when we neededto be at full strength andthat’s when we had all

these injuries pop up.”Senior outside hit-

ter Gilius Blinstrubaswas limited with bursi-tis (which was initiallythought to be a stressfracture). The Trojans(23-13) also dealt withbroken fingers to threedifferent players, andwhen Michael Grantcame back after missingthe early part of the sea-son with a stress fracturein his foot, he rolled hisankle and was sidelinedagain. Wasik said he had

his full lineup for just onematch this season.

The good part of allthe injuries was that theyounger players that willreturn next season hadmore opportunities to play.

“It didn’t help us in thehere and now, but it helpedus grow and added to ourdepth,” Wasik said.

West Suburban Silverall-conference selectionsBlinstrubas and BrooksNevrly are among sevenseniors that will not returnbut leave behind a good ex-ample for the players com-ing back.

“They leave behind alesson in unity,” Wasiksaid. “They were reallygood friends and hung outbeyond being a team onthe court. It made for anenjoyable coaching expe-rience.”

Big number

4-2: Trojans record in theWest Suburban Silver thisseason. They defeated ProvisoWest, York, Oak Park-RiverForest and Hinsdale Central.

hen the weather gets dark and gloomy on a

warm afternoon, big storm clouds roll in and

the sky turns an unusual color, there might be

a tornado on the way.

Tornadoes are violent storms that begin in a thun-

derstorm and extend all the way to the ground. They

have strong winds that often (but not always) form a

funnel shape, and can destroy many buildings, cars

and trees in their path.

Tornadoes form when a warm andmoist pocket of

air runs into a cold and dry front. When the twomeet,

they can cause the atmosphere to become unstable.

If strong winds meet this unstable atmosphere, it can

spin the storm into a tube formation, called a funnel

cloud. Once the funnel cloud forms, it can be very

dangerous.

There is normally a warning when a tornado is on

the way. You will often hear a tornado siren in your

town if conditions are right for a tornado to form. If

you are watching TV or listening to the radio, you will

also hear a warning. Tornadoes are also very, very

loud. You will often hear the sound of a tornado com-

ing— like a loud train going by— before you see it.

If a tornado is on the way, you need to move very

quickly to make yourself safe. Here are a few things to

remember:

! Avoid windows. If a window breaks, you want to be

away from the glass.

! Go to the basement: Basements are often the

safest place to be in a tornado. If you don’t have a

basement, get on the lowest floor of the building away

from windows.

! Protect yourself: Get under a heavy table, cover

yourself with a mattress or crouch on the floor with

your head covered in a safe place.

! At school: Follow the drill! Know what the plan is

for a tornado at school. Listen to your teachers’ in-

structions, and keep calm and quiet.

Keep grass look-ing its bestTomaintain a lovely

lawn, the experts atLowe’s offer these tips:

n Most lawns willgrowwell with about 1inch of water a week.Water in the earlymorn-ing, so the sunwill helpdry the grass. Night-timewatering can resultin prolongedmoistureon the blades and canopen the door to dis-ease.

n how do you knowif you’re wateringenough? Try the “soupcan test.” Set an emptycan next to your lawnsprinkler. When there’sabout a half-inch ofwater in the can, it’stime to turn off thesprinkler.

n When you’remow-ing, never cut off morethan one-third of thegrass blade. Leavingthe grass longer en-courages a deeper rootsystem. To better pro-tect your lawn on hills, mow up and downwhenusing a ridingmowerand across when using awalk-behindmower.

n Already dealingwith weeds? Post-emer-gents are a great way topromote grass growthwhile killing activelygrowing weeds on con-tact. Post-emergentswork best when appliedlater in the growingseason - after weeds areestablished but beforethey’ve gone to seed.Read the fertilizer’s labeland strictly follow theapplication instructionsfor best results.

Three years ago, a visionaryproject called the Urban TreeForge almost toppled with thedeath of founder John Metzler. It could have disappeared al-together if not for others whoshared his passion for trees.Today, artist Jason Boone

carries on that vision at UrbanTree, a new name and a new lo-cation in Pittsburgh.“It’s been a lifelong dream to

have a workshop, bring in thewood on one side and the furni-ture comes out the other,” saidBoone.

Lifelong passion

Like many life passions,Boone’s love of woodworkingstarted at an early age, on a farmnear Kansas City, Mo.“My parents were brave

enough to allow me to have afair amount of tools in the ga-rage,” he said, laughing. A youngentrepreneur, he would buy pat-tern books, go around town get-ting orders and return later withthe finished piece.

He said the direction of hislife changed the day Metzlerdied in 2010.“He passed away May 13, and

he had a bunch of jobs waitingto be finished,” said Boone. “Ijumped in and helped finish up.Then in July, I got laid off fromthe architectural firm.”Boone’s dream remained with

the forge, and so did he. How-ever, many of the other artistsdrifted away.“I started up my own com-

pany, buying out pieces of theUrban Tree Forge, even some ofthe wood,” he said.In July, he made the move

from the old location to the newone. It still functions as a co-operative, with five businessessharing the space.Boone’s dream of a “full-cycle”

workshop came closer with the

building of a drying kiln, a keycomponent in creating qualityfurniture.Important to Boone’s vision is

keeping everything local.

The process

The process begins whensomeone calls to donate his rawmaterial.A board member of Tree

Pittsburgh who has participatedin Arbor Aid for five years, heis sensitive to people’s feelingsabout trees and the years theyhave invested in them.“In general, people don’t want

to cut their trees down,” he said.“They come down for reasonsout of their control.”Not concerned with the type

of tree, he is looking for bigones, 30 to 36 inches in diam-eter, that he can slice into slabswith his monster of an Alaskanchain saw.“I get a lot of pin oak, ash trees,

beech and maples along with afew cherry and a few walnuts.”After four to six hours of work,

he ends up with six to eightplanks, which are transportedback to Urban Tree. They arestacked to air-dry in a largeroom in the front end of thewarehouse for a year or two be-fore they go to the drying kiln.Kiln-drying time for wood

varies with the species. Sometake as little as a month, whileothers may take as much as fourmonths.
