DOWNERS GROVE – Communi-ty High School District 99’s pursuitof electronic message board signs atNorth and South high schools re-mained undimmed by the village coun-cil after its meeting Feb. 3.
A motion during the meeting al-lowed further discussion for an amend-ment that would permit the signs inthe campus-scale institutional andpublic district, also known as INP-2.
As of Monday, the zoning ordinanceprohibited electronic message boardsigns in all zoning districts.
A vote on the amendment wasscheduled for the council’s meetingTuesday.
The school district has been work-ing with the village to begin the appli-cation process to rezone its two schoolproperties from residential to INP-2.
“District 99 has had an interestin digital content signage for almosta decade and we do understand theprohibitions regarding such signagein the village,” said SuperintendentMark McDonald at the Feb. 3 meeting.“However, we believe our schools haveunique and compelling communica-tions reasons that are perhaps differ-ent than any other entity in our com-munity.”
McDonald said while communi-cations strategies have changed dra-matically over the past decade, peoplestill rely on North High signage for in-formation relating to the school, andcontinue to remark about the lack ofsignage at South High because of a tor-nado in 2011.
Jim Kolodziej, director of physicalplant and operations and purchasingat District 99, presented the proposedsigns for the two schools. For North, the plan is to keep the base of the ex-isting sign and add the LED sign ontop. The digital sign would be similar
in size to the current sign at 8 feet 6inches tall and 10 feet wide, he said. The South sign would be identical insize to North’s and would be about 30feet from 63rd Street and 90 feet fromDunham Road.
The monument-style signs wouldoffer full-color display on two sides, static text and images and automaticdisplay dimming at night. The messag-es on screen would last about 12 sec-onds before disappearing and beingreplaced by a new message.
The signs would be used for schoolannouncements, crisis notification,weather-related closings, notificationof drills in progress, government agen-cy announcements and invitations toevents, according to District 99 Com-munications Director Jill Browning.
Mayor Martin Tully was on the vil-lage council in 2007 when the districtfirst brought up the idea of electronicmessage boards that the council ulti-mately rejected.
“While I struggle with the digital
sign concept, technology has changed, things have changed for the better,”he said. “The most important thing isthe new category of INP-2 zoning. Thatdidn’t exist in 2007.”
However, Tully expressed concernthat allowing INP-2 in one place couldlead to widespread use in areas suchas the business sector, where the signswouldn’t provide information that ben-efits the public.
“From my perspective, I would bein favor of seeing what an ordinancemight look like,” he said.
According to village documents, theINP-2 zoning district was designed toaccommodate development of proper-ties larger than 4 acres for public, civicand institutional use. The only proper-ty zoned INP-2 in the village is the Ad-vocate Good Samaritan Hospital cam-pus. Village documents indicate otherproperties that could be eligible forINP-2 zoning include: District 99 prop-erties, Downers Grove Grade SchoolDistrict 58 properties, the MidwesternUniversity campus, park district prop-erties, forest preserve properties andvillage properties.
Commissioner Greg Hose didn’tfeel the digital sign concept warrant-ed further discussion, citing concernsfor residents in proximity to otherproperties that would fall under thenew ordinance.
“In this day and age with tech-nological advancements being whatthey are, we have myriad ways tocommunicate. The sign just doesn’thave the same impact,” Hose said.“In terms of the rezoning I am fine,in terms of the location of the SouthHigh sign, I am fine with that. But asfar as digital signage, I cannot sup-port it at this time.”

“District 99 has had an interest in digital content signagefor almost a decade and we do understand the prohibitions
regarding such signage in the village. However, we believe our schools have unique and compelling
communications reasons that are perhaps differentthan any other entity in our community.”

PROFESSIONAL CLEANINGQ:How often should I have my teeth cleaned?A: The short answer is you should go for ateeth-cleaning session with your dentist every sixmonths, the same interval that’s recommendedfor a checkup. Professional cleaning is necessarybecause no matter how diligent you are inbrushing and flossing at home, there’s no wayyou will be able to reach every nook, cranny andfissure where plaque can accumulate and hardeninto tartar. The dentist’s office, for one thing,is equipped with the tools that can effectivelyget into those small spaces. And the work willbe done by either the dentist or by a dentalhygienist, a licensed professional. They will use either hand-held scalers – smalltools used to scrape off the plaque buildup – orperhaps an ultrasonic machine that uses soundwaves to loosen the plaque. Then they will washthe plaque away with a jet of cool water. As aprecaution against periodontal, or gum, disease, the dentist or the hygienist will also clean thesides of the roots of the teeth. In some cases, this may require the use of an anesthetic, eithertopical or injected, to eliminate discomfort. As a final step, they will polish your teeth tomake them sparkle and to help resist plaqueaccumulation. Talk with your dentist about theimportance of regular professional cleaning.

DOWNERS GROVE – Potentialamendments to the historic preserva-tion ordinance and creating a historicdistrict may promote civic pride, stabi-lize and improve the economic vitali-ty of Downers Grove’s landmarks andhistoric areas, according to officials.
While the existing historic preser-vation ordinance was adopted in 2007,currently, there are no historic dis-tricts within the village.
The ordinance includes historiclandmarks, historic districts and cer-tificates of appropriateness that worktogether, according to village docu-ments. In the seven years since the or-dinance’s inception, only two homeshave been designated landmarks: 5256Carpenter St. and 4943 Highland Ave.
The low numbers of landmarkhomes and lack of any historic dis-tricts in a town that is 183 years oldsignals that residents are not engaged, according to some council members.
“Something about what we are do-ing isn’t getting the desired results,”
Commissioner Bob Barnett said. “Isuspect everyone in town generally isof the impression that it would be bestif we protect some of our historic prop-erties and for some reason, in sevenyears, we haven’t.”
Commissioner Greg Hose said hewould like to explore incentive optionsfor residents interested in the ordi-nance.
“How can we get more interest indesignating your property or yourneighborhood as a historic district? And what can we do to incentivize peo-ple to move down that path?” he said.“We have a great history here in Down-ers Grove and we have a tremendousresource in the historic preservationordinance. I’d like to see more people
What’s next?
The council will meet again to discussthe proposed amendment changes thefirst week in March.

DOWNERS GROVE – Mary Frenchknew she was onto something goodwhen her own pain from three decadesin the fitness industry melted away. Infact, the physical education instructorfor Downers Grove School District 58felt so good that she decided to becomea Melt instructor to help others havethe same positive experience that sheencountered.
On her feet all day as a physical edu-cation instructor – but also working as aStott Pilates instructor andAFAAgroupfitness instructor – French, 51, had somenagging body aches and pain until shediscoveredMelt in 2010.
“Melt is my self-treatment techniquethat I used daily to hydrate my con-nective tissue to relieve stuck stress,”French said. “It has helped my plantarfasciitis, hip, back and neck pain.”
Cementing her fitness knowledgewith the Melt Method has been a dreamto empower others, she added.
The Melt Method is a self-treatmenttechnique developed by Sue Hitzmann,a manual therapist and exercise phys-iologist, according to the Melt website. The technique involves balls, sized from
large grapes to golf balls, that are rolledbeneath hands and feet in patterns forglobal fluid exchange within the body,French said.
“The technique taps into differentparts of your body where ‘stuck stress’may be living that can cause pain if leftuntreated,” French said. “The techniquesendsamessage to thenervous systemtohydrate certain parts of the body where
the connective tissue is dehydrated.”The gentle pressure from the balls
pulls fluid from surrounding fibroblastcells that are found in the connective tis-sue, she added.
French spent seven days in Utah in2013 to become one of only seven Meltinstructors in Illinois. She takes herknowledge to workshops throughoutthe area, including a recent workshop atWhole FoodsMarket Hinsdale.
“I think it’s a great class, but youhave to be proactive,” Hinsdale residentBogusia Biegaj said. “I definitely felt adifference in class. My hands feel looserand lighter.”
Berwyn resident Judy Vessely sawa flier and was interested after contin-uedpain fromahip replacement surgerytwo years ago.
“It’s your body, so what you put intoit, you get out of it,” Vessely said. “Thisis opening a different concept to me, andwhether it works for everyone, I don’tknow.”
French has felt the results firsthandand is on a mission to bring wellness topeople suffering from chronic pain.
“That is the benefit to this technique, the balls are soft,” French said. “Youdon’t want to put yourself into pain toget out of pain.”

A big thank you goes out to the panelists at the inaugural Subur-

a chance to hear about the prospects for the 2015 economy with
a focus on the western suburbs. “Cautiously optimistic” might
not sound like the most ringing endorsement for the state of our
towns’ economy, but given where we were just a few years ago,
it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

February is American Heart Month, and it’s also a popularmonth for working out. At the Downers Grove Recreation Center, thousands of visitors everyweek aim to make their hearts’healthier by lifting weights, running on the track, playingbasketball or joining a Zumbaclass. In early February, however, four Park Districtemployees had to act quick-ly, when one of our fitnessmembers collapsed. While onestaff member performed CPR,others called 911, and togetherthey were able to save a life.
Cardiac arrest often strikeswithout warning and, accord-ing to the American HeartAssociation, nearly 383,000out-of-hospital sudden cardiacarrests occur annually. Immedi-ate CPR, however, can double,or even triple, a victim’s chance of survival. It’s for emergenciessuch as this that every employee in the Downers Grove Park Dis-trict is trained in CPR and automated external defibrillator use;skills that can allow anyone to become a life-saving superhero.
Learning CPR doesn’t require weeks of intensive trainingeither, as it can actually be learned in one evening. The Down-ers Grove Park District offers several courses, including CPRskills for babysitters and classes in infant and adult CPR. TheseAmerican Red Cross certified courses cover CPR skills, rescuetechniques for conscious and unconscious choking victims andinstruction on how to use an AED machine (we have one in eachof our Park District facilities). Red Cross certification lasts for twoyears.
The American Heart Association website, heart.org, also pro-vides online courses and a list of other locations in the DownersGrove area that offer CPR classes. So for American Heart Month, take the time to learn a super power and sign up for a CPR course.

Celebrity Dance Studio CelebratesValentine’s Day With A Masquerade Ball!
By Denise Freese
The benefits of dance are tremendous,at both recreational and competitive lev-els. According to www.dance-teachers.org, dancing provides good exercise, whichcan lead to stress reduction, strongerbones and muscles, improved balance andstamina, and even weight loss. Dancersgain confidence by achieving new skills, and are rewarded with a creative outlet; allyou need is the desire to have a good time.
Ballroom dancing has become ex-tremely popular; the success of the tele-vision show “Dancing With The Stars” isa testament to this. Couples move to themusic using step-patterns and rhythmsthat match the musical style of a song. The “Smooth/Ballroom” style, made up offlowing dances that require a couple tobe constantly moving around the dancefloor, includes the Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, and Quickstep.
The second type of ballroom dance isthe Latin/Rhythm style. A lot of energy isrequired as the dancers keep time to the
rhythm of the music. Examples includeSwing, Rumba, Cha Cha, Salsa, Merengue,Disco, and Samba.

Keep Teeth Healthy By LimitingAcidic Foods & Beverages
By Denise Freese
It’s a well-known fact that sugar isharmful for your teeth. What you maynot know is that acid produced by bacte-ria in the mouth is the cause of cavities, according to Kimberly A. Harms, DDS, aspokeswoman for the American DentalAssociation.
Any carbohydrate that you eat canstart the process of acid production, including sugar, rice, potatoes, bread, fruits and vegetables, according towww.webmd.com. The website statesthat acidic foods and beverages canbreak down your teeth’s outer shell (theenamel), weaken the tooth, and maketeeth susceptible to decay.
As erosion of the tooth enamel pro-gresses, it can result in tooth sensitivity, pain, a higher likelihood of decay, anddarker teeth. Dr. Nancy Rosen, a den-tist in Manhattan, stated in an article onwww.cbsnews.com that acid in foodsand liquids can cause irreversible ero-sion of tooth enamel, which can’t be re-
paired with simple fillings. Veneers andcrowns are needed to fix the affectedteeth.
The article lists various suggestionsfrom The Mayo Clinic to minimize thedamage to teeth. First, limit consump-tion of highly acidic foods and beverag-es, such as soda (both regular and diet),energy drinks, juice, wine, most fruits, pickles, and sauerkraut. It’s also goodto eat acidic foods as part of a largermeal to help neutralize and eliminate theacids. The worst time to eat acidic foodis just before bedtime, because saliva, which helps neutralize and dilute acids, decreases during sleep.
The Mayo Clinic suggests drinkingwith a straw to minimize contact of thefluid with the teeth. Swishing the mouthwith water or a fluoride rinse can alsohelp neutralize the acid. Wait 30 min-utes to brush your teeth after eatingacidic foods so you don’t brush the acidall over your teeth.
Visit your dentist for regular clean-ings and check-ups to help keep yourteeth healthy!

SOUND OFFDowners Grove plow problemsThe Downers Grove snow removal for the
past stormwas just horrible. I drove someof their primary streets [on Feb. 3] … andtheywere still covered by snow and ice. Forexample, Curtiss and on to Gilbert Street …I also drove Burlington Avenue fromWest-mont to Downers Grove, and theWestmontportion was virtually snow free … but whenyou got to the Downers Grove portion, lookout! It appeared almost ignored. …We gaveyou a bigger salt dome – please use it. Youhave a new natural gas-powered plow truck– get it on the road. You have all the toys, but you don’t use them. … Downers Grove, they don’t have a disaster plan. They are aplan for disaster.
Worst Downers Grove snow effortI have lived in Downers Grove for
more than 25 years, and this [was] theworst snow removal effort I havewit-nessed.While other surrounding towns(Westmont, Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale, etc.)had plowed all of their streets down to clearpavement byMonday afternoon, DownersGrovewas still working on clearing theirmain roads. …Maybe our elected officialsshould redirect their efforts from buildingan unneeded $50million police station/vil-lage hall and spend some of that money ongetting the needed equipment necessary toprovide our residents with the services theydeserve. If it is not an equipment problem, thenmaybewe need to train our snowplowdrivers on how to effectively plow ourstreets. Something is very wrongwhenother surrounding towns can provide theseservices and Downers Grove cannot!
Historic Downers Grove house?I’m curious as to what makes the Ed-
wards House historic. Sometimes old isnot historic. Sometimes old is just old.
Late callOn Sunday [Feb. 1], we had about
18 inches of snow and blizzard con-ditions. Why is it that most districtscanceled Monday school early Sundayexcept District 58 [in Downers Grove]?We did not receive notice until 9:50 p.m.!This was an easy decision in our estima-tion. There should be a set time on thedays when school might be canceled. Youdon’t need a Ph.D., just common sense.
Sticker issueThe garbage stickers in the Downers
Grove vicinity are so thin for the pricewepay for them. It’s ridiculous. It’s hard to evenget themon the canswithout them rippingand falling apart. They’re so expensive; whydon’t theymake them a bit thicker?
Voters have spokenMore than 3,000 [Downers Grove]
voters signed the petition to place thereferendum on the ballot to advise thecouncil that they are for or against thevillage hall [and] police department andrelocating the fire station to the Ogdenand Lee site for the election. The villagecould have put this referendum questionon the ballot with the stroke of the penbut did not want to sample the public orgovern by referendum, to quote some ofthe commissioners. I believe the votersof Downers Grove have sent the councila strong message that they want to beheard.
College of DuPage board burnAs if the COD board approving [Robert]
Breuder’s buyout by a vote of 6-1 for thesecond time wasn’t enough, there at thebottom of the … page was an ad for theWaterleaf restaurant at COD, which isrunning in the red. Can we spell fiasco?
Name for COD buildingShould there be any other namesake to
the COD Homeland Security EducationCenter? Considering the less-than-hon-orable shenanigans of the COD trusteesand the controversy surrounding thelucrative buyout of Robert Breuder, I askthe COD trustees to please do somethinghonorable and name the COD HomelandSecurity Education Center after Sgt. Rob-ert Miller, a [Medal of Honor] recipientand native of Glen Ellyn who was killedwhile fighting for the very freedomsyou have as you make such importantseverance package decisions of yourless-than-honorable president!

Bruce Rauner unveils broad agendaBy KEVIN P. CRAVER
Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner inhis first State of the State address laidout a broad agenda to revitalize Illi-nois’ economy that focuses significant-ly on stripping the power and influenceof labor unions.
Rauner in his 40-minute speech tostate lawmakers the afternoon of Feb.4 called his proposals “bold” and “ag-gressive” but “necessary and very do-able” to repair the state’s deep finan-cial troubles, and make Illinois morecompetitive with other states.
“The time is now for all of us, Re-publicans and Democrats, to do bigthings – the right things – for the peo-ple of our great state. Now is the timefor bold and decisive action. It is makeor break time for the Land of Lincoln,”Rauner said.
Butwhile Rauner preached the needfor bipartisan cooperation to stop whathe repeatedly called on the campaigntrail the state’s downward spiral, healmost certainly will find a number ofhis proposals, especially those blunt-ing organized labor, a very hard sellto Democratic lawmakers whom holdHouse and Senate supermajorities.
He outlined some of his proposals inhis address, and others in an accompa-nying list of priorities he called “The
Illinois Turnaround.” He told lawmak-ers they should consider the plan asa whole rather than a list of separate
initiatives, and that while they wouldfind things they don’t like, they willfind a number of things they do.
Among his top priorities for eco-nomic growth are implementing moresignificant workers’ compensation re-form, tort reform, implementing truecompetitive bidding for public worksprojects while limiting prevailingwage requirements, and allowing localvoters to decide by referendum wheth-er or not local government employeesshould be forced to join a union or paydues as a condition of employment –Rauner dubbed the localized right-to-work areas “employee empowermentzones.”
“Employee empowerment zoneswill increase jobs for residents, in-crease economic activity for local busi-nesses and generate more tax dollarsfor local governments. It’s a win-win-win proposal,” Rauner said.
Rauner also seeks to limit organizedlabor’s influence by extending the ex-isting ban on political contributionsfor businesses with state contracts toall organizations with a collective bar-gaining agreement with state govern-ment, and organizations funded by en-tities receiving state Medicaid funds.
In exchange for the business re-forms, Rauner said he supports a planto increase the state’s minimum wagefrom $8.25 to $10 an hour, but phased inover seven years.
Gov. Bruce Rauner tours NOW Foods in Bloomingdale while on the campaign trail Oct. 24,2014. Rauner presented his first State of the State address Feb. 4 in Springfield.

POLICE WARN OF LATEST PHONE SCAM
The Downers Grove Police Department would like to alert ourcitizens to the latest telephone scam. A citizen contacted theCrime Prevention Unit and advised that they received asuspicious phone call at their home. The resident checkedcaller ID before answering his phone and was surprised to seehis own home phone number displayed. The resident answeredthe call, but the caller then hung up without speaking.
The technology exists that allows a caller to use a phony name and telephonenumber on your caller ID system. The typical way a scammer utilizes thistechnology is to display a financial institution or governmental agency on yourcaller ID. The scammer then gains your trust and attempts to lure you intoproviding sensitive financial information.
Per the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), caller ID spoofing is illegalif it is used with the intent of defrauding, causing harm, or wrongfully obtaininganything of value. Persons receiving these types of calls are encouraged to contactthe FCC by phone (1-888-CALL-FCC) to file a complaint.
As with any other suspicious phone call, never provide personal and/orfinancial information to any incoming phone call. If you receive a call, hangup, and call the financial institution or governmental agency directly via thephone number given on your banking statement or the agency’s website.

While Rauner in his speechdid not address the state’s $111billion unfunded pension li-ability – a 2013 reform bill isawaiting an Illinois SupremeCourt ruling regarding itsconstitutionality – his prior-ities list included a proposalto move state employees intoa new tier of benefits or into401(k)s while protecting thepension benefits they haveaccumulated to date. Another
proposal seeks to give stategovernment employees mer-it-based raises.
AnumberofRauner’s propos-als are aimed at the local level, suchas lowering theproperty taxburden on Illinois homeowners.Besides the right-to-work andprevailing wage reforms that hesaid will decrease local govern-ment’s costs, hewants a two-yearfreeze on property taxes and anincreased emphasis on consoli-dating local units of government– Illinois at almost 7,000 has farmore thananyother state.
“Our property taxes are
out of control and are crush-ing middle-class families. Illi-nois’ high property taxes haveskyrocketed because state andlocal governments have beenunable or unwilling to controltheir own spending. We mustempower taxpayers to takecontrol of their property taxbills by giving them greaterability to control local govern-ment spending,” Rauner said.
Rauner also echoed pre-vious calls for constitutionalamendments for term limitsandmerging the offices of trea-surer and comptroller.
Lawmakers will meet againnext week when Rauner deliv-ers his proposed 2016 budget, whichwill give amore completepicture as tohowheplans to payfor initiatives such as increasedfunding for K-12 education, andat the same time what needsto be cut. Besides a multibil-lion-dollar backlog of unpaidbills, the state faces a $6 billionbudget shortfall for the nextfiscal year beginning July 1. Amuch-criticized 2011 increase inthestate incometaxwasallowedto expire Jan. 1 as promised.
While Rauner said he wants
to keep income taxes “low andcompetitive with other states”and keep the state’s flat taxover a progressive one basedon income, he wants to extendthe state sales tax to include anumber of services. He likelywill find pushback from mem-bers of his own Republicancaucus, some of whom opposeany attempt to find more reve-nue over cutting spending.

praise from local Republicanlegislators and even receivedpositive words from the otherside of the aisle.
Illinois Senate RepublicanLeader Christine Radogno,R-Lemont, said she’s encour-aged by Rauner’s early signsof bipartisan leadership.
“It’s exciting to have agovernor who wants to workwith lawmakers on long-termsolutions to the state’s prob-
lems,” she said.State Sen. Chris Nybo,
R-Elmhurst, was part of thecommittee of lawmakerswho escorted Rauner intothe House of Representativeschambers to present his ad-dress.
Nybo said he is ready toroll up his sleeves and get towork with Rauner and hisfellow lawmakers to improveIllinois’ business climate andboost job creation.
“He’s got a plan to get oureconomy back on track, toget our budget under control,
and at the same time, to directmore money to our schools.Education is the most import-ant thing we do in our state,”Nybo said. “I think he canaccomplish a lot. I think heis looking for partners. I amexcited to be one of those part-ners, and I am ready to get towork.”
Rauner’s commitment togovernment consolidationtapped into a major talkingpoint for many local officials.State Rep. Ron Sandack,R-Downers Grove, hopes thestate can mirror the success
witnessed in DuPage County.“The DuPage County mod-
el has achieved an estimated$100 million in taxpayer sav-ings,” Sandack said, “and Ihope to see that effort extend-ed statewide so that taxpayerseverywhere can experiencetax relief.”
State Rep. Deb Conroy,D-Villa Park, said she was“especially encouraged” bythe governor’s pledge to con-solidate units of governmentafter she was part of the bi-partisan effort in DuPageCounty.
Conroy also agreed withRauner’s focus on the state’sfiscal crisis. She said she’scommitted to working withRepublicans to pass a “fiscal-ly responsible budget whilepreserving funding for ed-ucation and other vital ser-vices.”
“I look forward to hearingthe specifics of Gov. Raun-er’s plan and will continue towork with my colleagues inthe House and Gov. Rauner tofind balanced solutions to ourstate’s fiscal problems,” Con-roy said.

BROOKFIELD – Directlyacross from the Metra railcrossing, on the corner ofGrand Boulevard and Brook-field Avenue, sits 1-year-oldFuego, a quaint respite fromthe everyday. In a cleverlydesigned building, the tradi-tionally decorated Fuego is acantina in the truest sense, ahandy place to stop for a mar-garita or a cold beer and sometasty Mexican classics.
My friend and I grabbeda small table by one of theexpansive windows in the re-laxed space accented by stone.
We began our meal with abasket of light and salty chipsand salsa, and an order of theCeviche de Fuego, a chilledblend of chopped shrimp, tomatoes, onions, peppers, cilantro and lime – lots oflime. Elegantly served in a tallmartini glass, the seafood dishwas a refreshing and tastystart to our experience.
I opted for the carnitadinner, featuring slow-roastedpork sauteed with onions tocreate some oh-so-yummycaramelized edges. It’s like theMexican answer to a classicpulled pork, with complex sea-sonings and just enough bite.
My friend ordered the chilirelleno dinner, a fresh pobla-no pepper filled with Mexicancheeses. It was enclosed in aflaky crust, similar to a puffpastry, baked to a goldenbrown.
But the real star was thehomemade ranchero sauce.Smoky and rich, this blend oftomatoes, peppers and herbsis cooked a long time – until itturns thick, deep red and deli-cious. (The chef really shouldbottle the sauce and sell it atthe bar.)
And although we werestuffed, the dessert menu wascalling, so we ordered thechurro bites. They were deca-dent and sweet, fried crisp andcovered in a syrupy cinnamonsugar, with warm chocolatesauce for dipping.
A variety of classic Mex-ican favorites, from tacos toflautas, rounds out the menuat Fuego. Quench your thirst
with a margarita, house-madesangria or one of many greatlocal craft beers at the fullbar.
Letting Fuego live up to itsname – the Spanish word forfire – you can warm up thiswinter with homemade soupsor try the chili prepared with
both beef and chorizo. Theonline menu also highlightslunch specials.
The service was friend-ly and personable, and therestaurant’s location juststeps from the train shouldserve it well. When warmweather finally returns, patio
seating will beckon commut-ers and lovers of Mexicanfood to outdoor tables for arelaxing afternoon or eve-ning.
The Mystery Diner is anewsroom employee at Sub-urban Life Media. The diner’sidentity is not revealed tothe restaurant staff before orduring the meal. Only positivedining experiences will resultin published reviews.

DOWNERS GROVE – TheTrojan boys put an end toDowners Grove South’s recentdominance on the hardcourt.
For the first time since the2007-08 season, Downers GroveNorth prevailed in a regu-lar-season, crosstown rivalrygame, defeating the Mustangs66-53 on Saturday. DGN guardJordon Kedrowski scored agame-high 24 points and cen-ter David Edwards recordedhis first career double-double(12 points and 11 rebounds) asthe Trojans turned a tightlycontested first half into a com-fortable victory.
“The atmosphere waselectric tonight, I didn’t real-ly expect it to be that crazy,”Kedrowski said. “Just comingout to a packed gym with abunch of Downers North andSouth fans is a really cool ex-perience.”
Both teams exchanged bas-kets in a frenetic first half thatended with Downers GroveNorth on top 16-13. But DGSquickly responded in the sec-ond frame, as a Denis Alibe-govic 3-pointer gave the Mus-tangs their first lead.
Kedrowski then seized mo-mentum for the home team, knocking down consecutivetreys before converting athree-point play that gave theTrojans a 25-17 advantage.
“My teammates did a greatjob of finding me in open spotson the break,” Kedrowski said.“But credit Downers South, they are a hardworking groupand did a great job of bottlingus up after that.”
Sophomore T.J. Cliffordwas the catalyst for the Mus-tangs’ ensuing run, sinking agame-tying 3 with 1:30 left inthe second quarter then throw-ing down a furious left-handeddunk to give Downers GroveSouth a 32-30 halftime lead.
But in the third quarter, theTrojans used their size and in-side-out game to their advan-tage. Back-to-back baskets byEdwards opened the scoring inthe second half and swung mo-mentum in favor of the hometeam. The 6-foot-7 center then
converted a three-point playearly in the fourth quarter toincrease the lead to 49-42.
“That was the most com-plete game I’ve seen Edwardsplay,” DGN head coach JimThomas said. “He was domi-nant on both sides of the balland scored in double figuresfor the first time in his ca-reer.”
A pair of Kedrowski 3s andseveral clutch free throwssealed the victory for the Tro-jans. Downers Grove Northguard Myles Farley scored 12points while Alibegovic pacedthe Mustangs with 22 points,18 of which came from behindthe 3-point arc.
Both squads dropped con-ference games heading intothe crosstown rivalry game.Downers Grove South lost toHinsdale South 56-50 on Fri-day, while a buzzer-beating3 propelled Glenbard West toa 54-53 win against DownersGrove North.

DOWNERS GROVE – DownersGrove North senior Peyton Winters re-ceived an unexpected ovation beforeSaturday’s rivalry game against Down-ers Grove South.
With the lights dimmed in theDGN gym, Congressman PeterRoskam (R-Wheaton) took the courtand surprised Winters by presentingher with a certificate recognizing herappointment to the U.S. Naval Acad-emy.
“I have no doubt she will make herfriends, family and our entire commu-nity proud at the U.S. Naval Academy,”said Roskam, who nominated Wintersfor the Naval Academy when she wasgoing through the application process.“I look forward to hearing of her con-tinued success on and off the basket-ball court.”
“It definitely caught me off guard,I had no idea it was going to happen,”Winters said. “Once I saw him there,I caught on to what was happening.I was a little lost for words, it was ahumbling experience and an amazinggesture.”
But when the crosstown rivalrytipped off, Winters’ play spoke for it-self.
Coming off her first career tri-ple-double (24 points, 12 rebounds and12 blocks) against Glenbard West onThursday, Winters wreaked havocearly and often in the low post againstDowners Grove South. The 6-foot-2 se-nior tallied six points and four blocksin the first quarter as the Trojans racedout to a 17-8 advantage and held on fora 43-34 victory.
Matched up against 5-foot-8 Mus-tangs forward Kiera James, Wintersand the Trojans limited DownersGrove South’s interior play, regularlyforcing the visitors to settle for jumpshots and increasing their lead to 28-12by halftime.
“You expect that type of dominantplay from your seniors,” DGN headcoach Stephan Bolt said. “The ball hasto go into her and we have to get hertouches. She did a great job of finishingtoday and being aggressive and goingto the basket.”
In the second half, the Trojans wereable to answer after each DownersGrove South offensive outburst. TheMustangs opened the third quarterwith a 6-0 run, cutting the deficit to 10points before the Trojans ended the pe-riod on a 6-2 run of their own.
Kasandra Rugienius and AddysonWesolowski then drained back-to-back 3s in the fourth quarter to pull
within seven, but it was too little, toolate and DGN held on for a nine-pointwin.
DGN guard Lauren Porcelli led allscorers with 14 points, Izzy Greenblatthad 10 points and Peyton Winters had12 points and nine blocks
Following a 74-62 victory againstHinsdale South on Friday, DGS headcoach Lyndsie Long lamented thatthe Mustangs were out of sync earlyagainst their crosstown rival.
“Our shots weren’t falling and wewere rushing through our offense inthe first half,” Long said. “It took a lit-tle longer than expected to get in thegroove of the game and we just cameup short.”
Still, Friday’s win capped a 10-2West Suburban Gold record and sec-ond-place conference finish for theMustangs, who will host a West Subur-ban Crossover game against HinsdaleCentral at 6 p.m. tonight before begin-ning playoff action next week.
The Trojans will go on the roadWednesday for a crossover gameagainst Hinsdale South.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Why Kedrowski was selected:
Downers Grove NorthSenior | Senior
JORDONKEDROWSKI
The senior guard scored a game-high 24 points Saturdayin a win against crosstown rival Downers Grove South.
SuburbanLife
Jordon Kedrowski hasmade quite an impact in hisonly year on the Trojans’ var-sity team. After transferringfrom Neuqua Valley before thestart of the school year, thesharpshooting guard quick-ly because the team’s mostconsistent scorer and a solidballhandler. After his 24-pointperformance in the annualcrosstown rivalry game,Kedrowski, the Sears Hard-ware & Appliance Athlete ofthe Week, spoke with Subur-ban Life Sports Editor AlexSoulier about the matchupagainst Downers Grove South.
Soulier: How would youdescribe the experience of yourcrosstown rivalry game?
Kedrowski: The atmospherewas crazy. It was so great tosee both fan bases come outand support their teams. Wethanked the N-Zone for their
support, they’ve been great tous all season.
Soulier: You scored ninestraight points in the second quar-ter. What did you see on offensethat enabled you to go on a run?
Kedrowski: I think theywere pressuring a lot, and thatleaves room for mistakes and Ilooked to capitalize. My team-mates were doing a good job ofswinging the ball, and I wantedto reward them for finding me.
Soulier: What do you need todo to end the season on a posi-tive note going into playoffs?
Kedrowski: I think weneed to stick with what weare doing defensively. Thisseason, we have been able toscore relatively easy, but weneed to key in on defense andget better with every gameand practice. I think that willdrive us through the playoffs.
