Geography

Hungary is situated in the Carpathian Basin in Central

Europe.

It has boundaries, shared with Austria, Serbia, Croatia,

Slovenia, Romania, Ukraine and Slovakia. The highest

point in the country is Kékes (1,014 m) in the Mátra

Mountains north-east of Budapest. The lowest spot is 78

meters above sea level, located in the south of

Hungary, near Szeged.

The major rivers in the country are the Danube and Tisza, which divide Hungary into

3 parts. Lake Balaton, the largest, which is a famous tourist destination. Hungarians often

refer to it as the Hungarian Sea. It is Central Europe's largest freshwater lake and an

important recreation area. Smaller bodies of water are Lake Velence and Lake Fertő. Lake

Hévíz, the largest thermal lake in the world.

The Great Alföld contains the

basin of the Tisza River and its

branches. It encompasses more

than half of the country's

territory.

Hungarians have inhabited the Great Plain for at least a millennium. Here is found

the puszta, a long, and uncultivated expanse (the most famous such area still in existence is

the Hortobágy), with which much Hungarian folklore is associated. It was the home of

massive herds of cattle and horses.

The country’s political,cultural,historical and commercial center.

The EU 9th most populous capital city

The capitaly city was united in 1873 by 3 parts:Buda,Pest and Óbuda.Itis the Danube

river which divide the city.On its right side we can find Buda with its hills and on the

left side we can find Pest which is a flatland.

It has more than

Buda Castle

It was build during the middle-ages and got his final shape during the 17-19th centuries.

Now it contains several famous museums and galeries like

Parliament

It is the symbol of the Danube panorama.It is the biggest Parliament building in the

world.The building guard the Hungarian crown and regalias.

Hungarian National Museum

It contains the country’s most significant scientific

collection.The museum has a wide range of

exhibitions:Hungarian history from the beginning

till the 1990s.

Opera House

One of the leading Opera House in Europe.It has several famous bandmaster like Erkel

Ferenc,Otto Klemperer.

Hero’s square

In the middle archangel statue takes place and around this the statue of the 7 chief and the

most outstanding kings and leader’s of the country.

City center

It has several famous places.The most common are the Vörösmarty square and the Váci

utca/Fashion street/

Váci utca is the most famous mall int he city where you can find every kind of

shops,restaurants and cafés.

The Danube prom is also a well-known place which is situated between the Chain-

bridge and Elisabeth-bridge.

Bridges in Budapest

There are 7 bridges which connect Buda and Pest.The oldest one is the Chain-Bridge which

was built in 1849.

Countryside cities

Balaton

The beauty and the thousand appearances of Lake Balaton captivate the

curious tourists. It is the largest lake of Central Europe, its length is 77

kilometers. The region holds countless unique recreational facilities,

secrets and experiences for the guests. Its eastern peak is 100 kms far

away from Budapest.

Eger

Eger is a city of grape and wines. Its fort offers an excellent view of the

beautiful downtown. The city, with its glorious historical past, minarets

and palaces is a place of thermal baths, good food, wine and of course,

good cheer. It is 125 kms far from Budapest.

Pécs

Mysterious crypts from the Roman Age, Turkish djamis with cupolas, a

slim minaret, exquisite Zsolnay-ceramics, grandiose Csontváry-paintings,

decorative Vasarely-patterns, almond-trees blooming early in spring,

restaurants and cafeterias with pleasant atmosphere: this is Pécs. The city

is 200 kms far from Budapest to the South.

Sopron

The city which is one of the most abundant ones in historical sights in

whole Hungary is Sopron. It is a small town, wreathed by the Lővér Hills

covered in pine forests and vineyards producing excellent wine. It is

situated by the Austrian-Hungarian border, 220 kms from Budapest and

60 kms from Vienna.

Szeged

The number of sunny days is 2100 hours a year, therefore this town, at the

junction of the rivers Tisza and Maros, is often called the "town of

sunshine". Szeged is situated 170 kms far from Budapest to south-east.

Hungarian culture

Traditional clothing

It combines the Western and East impacts in its elements.In the territory of the country

regions has own clothing which were also the part of their identity.

It is common to have more colours especially blue and

red.Now people don’t wear traditional clothes just in

national holidays.

Folk music

The Hungarian folk music is quite diverse as contains Turkish and Finnish elements as

well.The number of the known folk songs are more than 100 000.

Economy

Hungary is the member of the OECD and European Union.

Agriculture sells a lot of products in the whole EU.The main products

are:wine,galloway and wheat.

The country is quite poor in raw materials.It attract the Finance activities,property

investment and economic service.

It is the service sector which is growing continously.During the last decades huge

investment was made in logistic and transportation sector and also a lot of

multinational company establish new firms in Hungary.

Food and Gastronomy

The Hungarian cuisine is a significant part of the Hungarian culture, it is diverse,

creative assortment of meals, and it has unique and characteristic tastes.

Our cuisine culture is a result of more than a thousand year of

historical development, which is based on natural capabilities of

Hungary, but enough of the boring history, let’s see how it goes in

everyday life.

Traditional Hungarian dishes are primarily based on meats, seasonal vegetables, fruits,

fresh bread, cheeses and honey.

The most popular food in Hungary are ‘pörkölt’ (stew),

goulash soup, fisherman’s soup, stuffed cabbage,

paprika potatoes, bean soup, ‘túrós csusza’ – curd

dumplings (paste with curd cheese, clotted cream, and a

little bacon, and Somló sponge cake, Dobos cake.

Our recipes are based on centuries-old traditions of spicing and preparation methods. So meal

times have a significant role in our lifes, you won’t starve here

Weather and clothing

Our climate is temperate continental, so you can find every kind of weather and

temperature, you have to be prepared for every case There are a lot of differences between

the 4 seasons. The coldest month is January, the hottest is July.

Although weather can make us surprised for time to time, so as our mothers said ‘you

should always wear more strata’. In the winter time, temperature can be really low, don’t

AIESEC in Hungary

AIESEC was founded in the country in 1972.By this action

Hungary is in the first countries in the soviet area which joined

AIESEC.

In the country 12 Local Commitees work in

universities.The country is has good reputation in the region and network by its good quality

internships in GIP and GCDP side.We have very close partnerships with several countries

from each region e.g:Ukraine,China,Colmbia etc.

We have several National partners with whome we have partnership in Exchange or

in other areas.

These companies are: TATA Consultancy Services,ABInbev,PriceWaterhouseCoopers and

P&G.

There are also several local camps and national conferences during the year where we have

also international delegates and facilitators.

It has tracks for the new members and also the current members/leaders of the country with a

lot of company representatives.

GLS 2012-Global Leader’s Summit

Global Leaders’ Summer is one of the biggest and most important in the AIESEC world when

the leader of the organisation contribute to the long-term strategy and development.

Reception activities in Hungary

AIESEC is not just responsible for your legal and accommodation obligations but also

to organise several kinds of events in order to get to know the country and the culture.

It can be variable by LCs as everyone has different ideas for entertainement as here you

can get to know the standard ones.

Welcome parties biweekly

For the new comers it is really important to introduce them to the current interns and

to the AIESEC members.

They are mostly chill-out parties in pub,party place in the city.

Cultural day

It is organised by Budapest LCs.The goal of these events is to show

some piece of the Hungarian culture to our interns by different

activities,like festivals,wine-tasting.

Reception week-end

Organised by both Budapest and countryside LCs.These are one week-end long

excursions in the country which contains several kinds of programs from the museums till

excursions.
