JACKALS DOUBLE UP DEVILS, 4-2

Elmira, NY – Just 22 seconds after surrendering a one-goal third-period lead, the Elmira Jackals got a goal by A.J. Perry and went on to beat the Trenton Devils, 4-2, Wednesday at First Arena.

Improving to 32-26-6-3, the win clinches a season-series victory for the Jackals, while the Devils fall to 24-36-2-6, their third loss in four games.

Even though Perry’s goal proved to be the game-winning tally, the Jackals’ league-leading offense was ignited by the first professional points of four different players, including Martin Moucha and Andrew Favot who each contributed two points. The winning goalie was Marco Cousineau, who improved to 7-3-0 against the Devils, making 36 saves on 38 shots.

The only Devils to score past Cousineau were Jeff Prough and J.S. Berube, while Ryan Ginand moved to within five points of Scott Bertoli’s single-season franchise scoring record, notching his 74th point of the season with an assist. Returned on loan from Albany Wednesday, Dave Caruso made 31 saves in a losing effort in his first start for Trenton since March 9.

After getting shut out twice in the previous three games, the Devils wasted little time getting on the scoreboard on Wednesday, as Prough scored just 2:51 into the first period. Prough’s goal was scored when he corralled a carom off the end-boards on his forehand, faked to his backhand, and quickly shot into the corner of the net. Prough’s 21st of the season is his first for Trenton since February 5, having spent 21 of 22 intervening contests with Albany. Ginand and Dave Leaderer assisted.

The Devils lead stood for less than four minutes, as Martin Moucha intercepted a clearing attempt by Caruso and fired into an open net to tie the game, 1-1, at 6:16 of the first.

Just under 10 minutes after tying the game, the Jackals took a 2-1 lead when Drew Paris blasted a shot from the right point through Caruso for his fifth goal of the season.

Elmira maintained its lead into the third period, but J.S. Berube collected the rebound of a Chris Berenguer shot and deposited his 11th goal of the season, on the backhand, to tie the game, 2-2. Prough picked up the secondary assist for his 10th multi-point game of the year.

However, Perry restored Elmira’s lead just 22 seconds after Berube tied the game and Vinny Geonnetti added an insurance goal at 10:22, as the Jackals cruised to a 4-2 victory.

With four games remaining in the 2010-11 season, the Devils return to Sun National Bank Center to begin their final homestand of the season against the Kalamazoo Wings Friday at 7:00 p.m.

Jeff Prough picked up two points in his return to the Trenton lineup Wednesday in Elmira.

Ryan Ginand added another assist Wednesday in Elmira and now has 74 points for the year, tied for third most in the ECHL. With four games to play, the second-year pro from Northeastern trails Scott Bertoli by five points for Trenton’s single-season scoring record. Bertoli put up 79 points (31g, 48a) in 64 games during his final pro season in 2006-07.

Ginand also leads the ECHL with 395 shots on goal this season (5.9 per game), the third highest total in ECHL history, and can move into second place with three or more shots tonight.

RECORD-CHASING RYAN

Wednesday’s game in Elmira marked the return of two player from AHL-Albany: goaltender Dave Caruso and forward Jeff Prough.

Prough netted his 21st goal and 10th multi-point game of the season Wednesday, his first game for Trenton since February 5. For Prough, Trenton’s leading goal scorer each of the last two seasons, his return to New Jersey’s state capital comes following the longest and most productive AHL stint of his four-year professional career. In 20 games with Albany since February, Prough potted his first AHL goal (2/20 vs. Adirondack) and assist (2/15 at Charlotte) while making marked improvements in his defensive play. Head coach Kevin Dean noted the most substantial improvement in Prough’s effort on the penalty kill.

For Caruso, his most recent stint in Albany was his third this season in the AHL, where he’s posted six of his 11 total wins this season. The 28-year-old is tied for Albany’s lead in wins since February, when he posted his first AHL shutout February 15 in Charlotte. Caruso suffered the loss Wednesday in Elmira, allowing four goals on 35 shots.

Prough and Caruso are two of 11 players to suit up for both Albany and Trenton this season. Entering action on March 25, the Albany Devils have won eight of their last 12 games and have a record of 30-35-1-4, with 11 games remaining in the AHL’s regular season. Other Trenton players who’re currently in Albany include Andy Thomas (recalled March 16) and Darcy Zajac (recalled February 18).

Ben Farrer Signed to an ATO from Providence College March 12, Farrer suffered a season-ending lower body injury in his pro debut March 13.

Matt Godlewski Signed from nearby Princeton University on March 11, the 6-1, 195-lb. defenseman has played four games with Devils and posted an even plus/minus rating, though he did not make the trip to Kalamazoo and Toledo because of school work.

Bryan Haczyk Nutley, NJ native signed out of Niagara University on March 11 and recorded an assist in pro debut that night vs Toledo. Suffered lower body in third pro game, March 16. Now on 3-day injured reserve.

Matt Germain Signed to his first pro contract from Providence College on March 12, the Rockland, MA native has been a fequent face on the power play and has a goal and two assists in his first five games as a Devil, plus a shootout goal March 16 vs. Elmira.

Alan Reynolds Goalie signed to ATO from Princeton University March 18 who played 8:46 of scoreless hockey in relief of Jeff Lerg last Friday night. Released from ATO 3/22.

Chris Berenguer The son of former Major League Baseball pitcher Juan Berenguer, Chris was signed to his first pro contract from Hamline University on March 16. In four games, the 6’2 defenseman has three assists.

Trenton begins its final homestand of the season tonight against the Kalamazoo Wings at 7:00 p.m. The Devils were 1-3 in the four games since last playing at SunCenter March 16. Trenton was mathematically eliminated from possible playoff contention with Sunday’s 1-0 loss in Toledo. The Kalamazoo Wings, have already punched their ticket to this year’s playoffs, the Devils have a chance to play the spoiler role in their opponent’s quest for a North Division championship. The K-Wings lead second-place Wheeling by six points with six to play and one game in hand.

Trenton also seeks to exact revenge for last Friday’s 5-0 loss at Wings Stadium which gave Kalamazoo a 2-1 edge in the season series and a 5-3 lead in the all-time head-to-head series. Both teams are coming off losses, as the Wings lost 1-0 Wednesday vs. Cincinnati and the Devils lost 4-2 Wednesday in Elmira.

Trenton has been without Trevor Kell and Bryan Haczyk the last three games and Dan Charleston the last two. None of the three are expected in Trenton’s lineup tonight. Trenton doesn’t take the ice again until next Wednesday, while the Wings play in Elmira Saturday and Sunday. The Devils try to even the season series with Kalamazoo after losing 5-0 last Friday at Wings Stadium.

Defenseman Chris Berenguer, who was signed by the Devils out of Hamline University March 16, has been chosen by the nation’s coaches as the 2011 winner of the Sid Watson Award Award, symbolic of the nation’s best Division III men’s hockey player.

The 6-2, 205-lb. native of Eden Prairie, MN, helped Hamline to a 17-7-5 record and both the regular season and tournament titles of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). The Pipers finished the season with a 4-0 NCAA quarterfinal loss to St. Norbert last week after defeating Wisconsin-Superior in the opening round, 3-2 in OT.

Berenguer, the second straight MIAC Player of the Year to win this award, earned first team All-American honors for the third time this season. His four-year career marks: 37 goals and 79 assists for 116 points.

Said Hamline head coach Scott Bell in nominating Berenguer, “Chris Berenguer is the best player to ever put on the Hamline University sweater, and he is without question one of the best to ever play in the MIAC. He scores as well as any defenseman in college hockey, to be sure - his 32 points rank him third nationally and his 13 goals are second nationally among defensemen - but more importantly, he scores the big goals. None of his scoring prowess takes away from his play as a defensive defenseman. He is a rock in front of the net, and lugs the puck up the ice consistently and steadily.

“Chris embodies the D-3 spirit and philosophy. He is happily married to Nicole and has a beautiful daughter, Stella. His ability to balance hockey with academics and family has caught heartwarming conference and national press.”

The award is named in honor of former Bowdoin College head coach Sid Watson, a three-time winner of the Edward Jeremiah Award as Division III Coach of the Year. Watson won 326 at Bowdoin in a career that spanned from 1959 to 1983. He was also the school’s athletic director.

Berenguer was a key member of the Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL) Anderseon Cup championship team during the 2005-06 season.
