“SQL Server 2008 R2 Fast Track Data Warehouse gives us a high-performing solution that provides our employees with a complete picture of our business in other countries, while giving them new, powerful analytical tools.” Rolf Daalder, Director, ICT, FMO Development bank FMO invests in more than 80 emerging markets. The bank wanted to speed the delivery of updated financial data to its employees and get reports to regulators faster. To do so, FMO implemented a Microsoft data warehouse and business intelligence (BI) solution. Employees now have a complete view of the bank’s business; reports can be delivered quickly; and the solution can scale to meet business growth. Business Needs The Netherlands Development Finance Company (FMO) is a development bank that invests in companies and financial institutions in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. FMO provides loans, guarantees, and other products and services with the goal of contributing to sustainable growth and alleviating poverty. The bank’s investment professionals need frequent access to updated data about its activities in those markets. “Employees need to investigate what FMO is doing in Africa, for example, when they’re researching that market and meeting with potential clients and investors,” says Rolf Daalder, Director of ICT at FMO. “It was complicated to compare finance information with marketing information. There was no integrated view.” Additionally, the FMO IT department wanted to improve the process of providing business intelligence data to the bank’s finance department. Daalder says, “All departments need updated reports every morning when they arrive in the office. But it was too time-consuming to extract the data from different systems.” FMO also had to address increasing requests for data from regulators. “Auditors require us to provide more and more financial information, faster than ever,” Daalder says. “We wanted to get data to them as quickly as possible. Here also we wanted to improve.” FMO decided it needed a new BI solution that offered better analytical capabilities and faster performance. Solution In late 2011, FMO tapped Info Support, a Microsoft partner, to help implement a new data warehouse and BI solution. In the first phase of the solution, Info Support helped FMO implement Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise data management software. Info Support also implemented a BI solution based on Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Analysis Services and SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services. “We were already using SQL Server 2008, and our users work in Microsoft Excel and SharePoint every day,” says Daalder. “This solution added BI features on top of what we already had, and that was very attractive to us.” Info Support used its standardized Endeavour BI development platform to implement the solution. Endeavour BI is a set of building blocks, document standards, guidelines, and tools based on best practices.
