How to help your child with their reading…
This term in our newsletter, we will be exploring ‘The Big 5’ of reading development. Research has found that each of these
is an essential building block towards our students becoming
successful readers.
The Big 5 Reading Fluency Fluent reading is a particularly important
skill for students as they move through
the year levels with increasingly more
use of longer textbooks, read more
lengthier narratives and research topics
in depth and are most often working
with set timelines. It supports students to
read texts for meaning; to understand
an author’s message, and to be able to
engage in meaningful talk about texts
(Serravallo, 2010).
An idea for practising fluency at home:
Read with a mask: Ask a student to
select and wear a mask. The character/
animal then reads the text to a partner
using the voice of the character/animal.
When the character/animal has finished
reading, the partner asks at least three
questions about what was read to
check for comprehension.
To be eligible for Camps, Sports and Excursion Fund payment.
You will need to provide your current Healthcare / Pension card for us to sight and photocopy
must be valid past 28th January 2020. Please hand your application form to the office
before Friday 26th June 2020
