ARIZONA’S HUNGER RESPONSE In 2010, nearly 1,600 food banks, pantries and other food providing organizations offered "first line" defense against hunger in Arizona. The State's emergency food provider network continues to work tirelessly to respond to the growing needs of hungry people, distributing nearly 134 million pounds1
of food to Arizona's low-income children and adults.
There is still a lot to be done. Record numbers of foreclosures, high cost of gas and food, and changes in federal and state resources have resulted in an escalating volume of hungry families and individuals requesting emergency and supplemental food assistance from Arizona's food banks. Please contact the Association of Arizona Food Banks or one of our regional food bank warehouse members (inside front cover) for more information about:
♦ starting a food bank / pantry; ♦ distributing fresh produce through a local produce distribution network; ♦ recruiting more volunteers to help with an existing program; ♦ handling large donations of food; ♦ locating emergency and/or supplemental food supplies; ♦ obtaining technical assistance on any issue related to food banking; or ♦ working toward long-term solutions to eliminate hunger and its effects.
The Association of Arizona Food Banks is a private, non-profit organization whose member food bank warehouses coordinate a multitude of food assistance programs to serve the entire state of Arizona. Established in 1984 to bring a more efficient, coordinated approach to the enormous task of providing food to a growing number of hungry citizens, our staff and Board of Directors work to obtain resources for food banks, share up-to-date information about the impact of hunger, help create solutions to eliminate hunger as well as promote sound public nutrition policy. This coordination model has been recognized nationally for its outstanding achievements by such entities as Feeding America (formerly America’s Second Harvest) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Association of Arizona Food Banks has been working since 1984 to strengthen communities and help make food banking better.
1 Association of Arizona Food Banks – As reported by all food banks for fiscal year 2009-2010.
