Community Building Block: Resolving Conflict

Conflict and Sonship

When the Bible discusses redemptive purposes and aspects (predestination, glory, atonement, Spirit’s work, new covenant, sanctification), sonship is in view (e.g., Rom 8:15-32; Gal 3:15-4:7; Eph 1:3-6; Heb 2:1-18; 12:1-14; 1 Jn 3:1-3).

Sonship is the distinctive mark of the New Covenant (Gal 3:26-4:7)

Sonship is a key characteristic of sanctification (Heb 12:4-7)

Sonship and Conflict

It reminds us that sonship means likeness

It reorients our perceptions of each other

It reorients our thoughts and response toward God and away from ourselves

Causes of Conflict

Misunderstandings resulting from poor communication

Differences in values, goals, gifts, calling, priorities, expectations, interests, or opinions

Competition over limited resources

How Could You Respond?

Glorify God: How can I please and honor God, in this situation?

Get the Log Out: How can I show Jesus’ work in me by taking responsibility for my contribution to this conflict?

Gently Restore: How can I lovingly serve others by helping them take responsibility for their contribution to this conflict?

Go and Be Reconciled: How can I demonstrate the forgiveness of God and encourage a reasonable solution to this conflict?
