Identifying nouns

• Identify all nouns in the following sentence: According to research, on average, people who use languages in their jobs earn around 8% more.

• Rewrite the sentence so that every noun begins with a big letter.

Nouns with a capital N!

• According to Research, on Average, People who use Languages in their Jobs earn around 8% more.

• All nouns written in German begin with a capital letter, regardless of where they are in a sentence.

Another complication

• In the German language, all nouns have a gender attached to them.

• der – masculine

• die – feminine

• das – neuter

Identifying the gender

• Genders are sometimes, but not always, logical.

• Logical: der Bruder; die Schwester

• Illogical: das Mädchen

• There are some patterns, but the best way to learn a gender is to memorise it with the noun.

• Words with the following endings are usually masculine: -el; -en; -er; -ig; -ich; -ling; -and; -ant; -ar; -är; -ast; -ent; -eur; -ier; -ist; -ismus; -or; -us

• Most trees, fruits and flowers are feminine.

• Words with the following endings are usually feminine: -age; -e; -ei; -heit; -keit; -schaft; -ie; -ek; -eke; -ik; -in; -ion; -tät; -ung; -ur

• Names of cities and most countries are neuter.

• Words with the following endings are neuter: -chen; -lein

• Words with the following endings are usually neuter: -tum; -ment; -eum; -ium; -um; -ett

• Infinitives used as nouns are always neuter.

• Knowing the correct gender of nouns is important because gender affects articles and adjectives in sentences.
