The previous match-up during the 2001 preseason slate was the inaugural game played at Heinz Field. COACHES MARTY MORNHINWEG Marty Mornhinweg (1-12 career record) was named the Detroit Lions' head coach January 25, 2001. Mornhinweg previously served the last four seasons as the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. His offensive outputs during those four seasons included tremendous gains in both the running and the passing game. During his tenure with the 49ers, the team led the NFL in rushing in consecutive seasons (1998-99), grounding out 2,085 yards (130.0 avg./gm) in ‘99 and a team-record 2,544 yards (159.0 avg./gm) in ‘98. During the 1998 season, San Francisco led the league in rushing, gross passing yards, total offense and first downs, as they accumulated the second-highest all-time offensive output in league history. The unit became the first offense to lead the league in both gross passing and rushing yards since the Chicago Bears accomplished that feat in 1941. Prior to joining the 49ers coaching staff, he spent two seasons with the Green Bay Packers from 1995-96. He was the Packers’ offensive assistant/quality control coach in 1995, and was quarterbacks coach in 1996 as the team went on to win Super Bowl XXXI. Before joining the pro ranks, Mornhinweg served as the offensive coordinator for Northern Arizona (1994). He spent three seasons with the University of Missouri from 1991-93 (offensive line 1992-93, slots/tight ends 1991). He was the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach for Southeast Missouri State (1989-90), running backs coach for Northern Arizona (1988), a graduate assistant at Texas-El Paso (1986-87) and receivers coach at Montana (1985). He began his coaching career at Oak Grove High School (San Jose, Calif.) in 1984. Mornhinweg was a standout quarterback in college while directing the offense at Montana, as he established 15 passing records at the school. He prepped at Oak Grove H.S. and played for Mike Holmgren, who was the school’s offensive coordinator. BILL COWHER Now in his ninth year as Pittsburgh's head coach, Bill Cowher (career overall record of 102-66, 2-1 vs. Detroit) was named to succeed Chuck Noll as the Steelers head coach on January 21, 1992. Since that appointment, Cowher has carved out his own niche in his hometown (Crafton, Pa.), becoming only the second coach in NFL history (Paul Brown, 1950-55) to lead his team to the playoffs during his first six years as a head coach. He also guided Pittsburgh to a berth in Super Bowl XXX, the club's first appearance in the league's title game since 1979. Cowher took over as Steelers head coach in 1992 following seven years as an assistant coach under Marty Schottenheimer in Cleveland (1985-88) and Kansas City (1989-91). He served as the Chiefs' defensive coordinator/linebackers coach during his three years in Kansas City, and was special teams coach for the Browns in 1985-86 and secondary coach in 1987-88. Cowher's coaching career began after a five-year NFL playing career (linebacker), which included three years in Cleveland (1980-82) and two seasons with the Philadephia Eagles (1983-84). Prior to his NFL playing career, Cowher was a four-year letterman at North Carolina State, where he was the Wolfpack's team captain and most valuable player in 1978 as a senior.

LLAASSTT GGAAMMEE DETROIT 27, MINNESOTA 24; DECEMBER 16, 2001; PONTIAC SILVERDOME The Detroit Lions won their first game of the 2001 regular season and spoiled the Minnesota Vikings' playoff chances. After losing their last nine contests by a mere 4.2 average points per game, the Lions found a way to win in the fourth quarter. QB Mike McMahon, who threw for 241 yards and rushed for an additional 74, orchestrated a 13-play, 80-yard fourth quarter drive which gave the Lions a three-point lead they would not relinquish. Both teams opened the game scoring defensively. CB Todd Lyght stepped in front of a QB Todd Bouman offering and returned the interception 59 yards for a touchdown to give the Lions a 7-0 lead. It marked the fifth touchdown and 35th interception (four with Detroit this season) of Lyght's career. The Vikings, however, would answer with a defensive touchdown of their own. S Tyrone Carter picked up RB Aveion Cason's fumble and rumbled 46 yards to knot the score at seven apiece. On the ensuing drive, McMahon's 69-yard pass to WR Scotty Anderson set up a one-yard touchdown run by McMahon to give the Lions a 14-7 lead. Midway through the second quarter, the Lions tacked on an additional three points as K Jason Hanson nailed a 44-yard field goal to give the Lions a 17-7 lead. Led by DE Robert Porcher, who recorded two sacks on the day (his fourth multi-sack game of the year), the Lions' defense did not allow any more points and walked into the locker room at halftime with a ten-point lead. Due in large part by the play of Vikings WR Randy Moss (seven catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns), the Vikings scored 17 unanswered points in the third quarter to take a four-point lead. But with 10:40 left in the game, FB Cory Schlesinger scored on a one-yard touchdown plunge and the Lions' defense held the rest of the way to give the Lions their first victory of the season.

THE LAST TIME Pittsburgh 16, Detroit 19 OT November 26, 1998 at the Pontiac Silverdome In the first Thanksgiving Day overtime game since 1980, the Lions rebounded from a 10-point second half deficit to edge Pittsburgh, 19-16, on a 42-yard Jason Hanson field goal 2:52 into the extra period. The game-winner was Hanson's fourth field goal of the day (eighth four-field-goal outing of his career) and came after Detroit had marched into Steelers' territory on the first drive of overtime. After a scoreless first quarter, Norm Johnson gave the Steelers a 6-0 lead with the first two of his three field goals, but Hanson cut that lead in half with a 45-yard effort late in the second quarter to make the score 6-3 at halftime. Each team punted after their first two possessions of the second half, but Kordell Stewart hit Will Blackwell from 24 yards out to stake Pittsburgh to its biggest lead of the day at 13-3 midway through the third quarter. Hanson ended the Lions' next drive with a 51-yard field goal to trim Pittsburgh's advantage to 13-6. The Lions' defense then held the Steelers twice, paving the way for a game-tying 21-yard Charlie Batch-to-Herman Moore TD connection with 6:36 remaining. Detroit got the ball back immediately deep inside Steelers' territory following a fumbled reverse on the ensuing kickoff, and Hanson gave the Lions their first lead of the day three plays later (35-yard field goal). Stewart then engineered a 15-play, 74-yard drive that put Pittsburgh in position for a 25-yard game-tying field goal by Johnson with one second remaining in regulation. Detroit won the coin toss in overtime, paving the way for Hanson's heroics. Despite churning out only 70 yards rushing, the Lions were led by a gutsy effort by Batch, who left the game late in the first half after straining his neck while blocking on a 35-yard reverse run by Germane Crowell. Batch finished the day 16-of-23 for 236 yards and a TD and ran his streak without throwing an interception to 94 consecutive attempts.

LLIIOONNSS AATT AA GGLLAANNCCEE LLIIOONNSS OOFFFFEENNSSEE OFFENSIVE LINE: The Detroit Lions' offensive line went through major changes this off-season… Only two players from last year's front five started all 16 games in 2000 (G Jeff Hartings and C Mike Compton) and both players left via free agency… Ten-year veteran Ray Roberts, who started ten games at both tackle positions last season, retired… And T Aaron Gibson was released on Oct. 30… With those changes, only four players remain from the 2000 squad that had starting experience, including: C Eric Beverly, G Kerlin Blaise, G Tony Semple and G Stockar McDougle… The Lions emphasized the selection of offensive linemen in the draft… The team's top two selections, T Jeff Backus from Michigan and C Dominic Raiola from Nebraska, should prove to be a pillar of strength and stability for years to come… Beverly has started every game for the Lions at center, although Raiola saw his first action in the middle (two series) during the Lions' regular season game against the 49ers (11/4) and has played at center in five of the last six games… McDougle, who made the transition from left tackle to left guard in the off-season, saw his first action at Chicago (11/2) at right tackle after being sidelined for seven weeks due to a foot injury… Last week vs. Minnesota, McDougle saw more playing time at right guard in place of Matt Joyce… Eight-year veteran Tony Semple, who started nine of the last ten games at left guard, has played solid football and has impressed the coaches… One of the key acquisitions made by the Lions in the off-season was the signing of free agent G Brenden Stai… Stai, a six-year NFL veteran who spent his first five years with the Pittsburgh Steelers and 2000 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, has started every game at right guard… Fourth-year G Kerlin Blaise adds depth to the right guard position…. Backus, the team's 2001 first-round draft choice, has been impressive since joining the Lions and has started every game at the left tackle position… Eight-year veteran T Matt Joyce, who was signed in the off-season, has become a very valuable member of the front five (has started at right tackle and left guard spots in 2001)… His ability to switch positions along the offensive line has given him increased playing time, and he has assumed the role as the team’s regular starting right tackle.

TIGHT END: 1999 Pro Bowl participant and 2000 Pro Bowl alternate David Sloan has both the size and speed to be a lethal target down the middle… He has caught 24 passes for 284 yards and four touchdowns in 2001… Against the Bengals (10/28), Sloan's two touchdowns (both one-yard TD receptions) marked a single-game career-high for the seven-year veteran, while vs. Arizona (11/18), Sloan again caught two touchdown passes… Last week vs. Minnesota (12/16), Sloan led the team with five receptions and collected 64 yards on the day, including a key 26-yard reception on the game-winning drive that put the Lions up for the remainder of the game… The Lions released Pete Mitchell on Nov. 14 and John Waerig on Dec. 11 to make room for other roster positions… With Mitchell and Waerig's departure, rookie Stephen Trejo has shifted from fullback to tight end to fill in as a backup… Trejo was the team's starting TE at Chicago with the injury (knee) suffered by Sloan… Bradford Banta, an eight-year NFL veteran, was signed during the off-season and is used primarily as the long snapper on special teams. WIDE RECEIVER: The wide receiving corps is loaded with talent and is beginning to prosper under the new West Coast offense, although the group has become depleted with injuries… Veteran Johnnie Morton has been the Lions' most consistent receiver in recent years and his speed and pass-catching ability is again proving to be a significant asset for the Lions' offensive unit… He leads the team with 60 catches for 947 yards and three touchdowns… Morton has tallied four 100-yard receiving games, including 111 yards on five catches in the 2001 opener against the Packers, six catches for 100 yards and a touchdown in the team's second game against the Browns, nine grabs for 113 yards and a touchdown against the Titans (10/21) and seven catches for 153 yards against the Arizona Cardinals (11/18)… Morton needs only 53 yards to record his fourth 1,000-yard receiving season in the past five years… Germane Crowell, the Lions' deep-play threat, tore his Patella tendon against the Titans (10/21) in the fourth quarter and will miss the remainder of the season… Up to that point, Crowell was building steam

Herman Moore, who owns virtually every receiving record in Lions' history, was placed on IR (10/17) due to a torn muscle in his hip… Eight-year veteran Bert Emanuel was signed on Oct. 24 to add experience to the depleted receiving corps... Emanuel was playing extremely well and becoming better accustomed to the West Coast offense (three starts), however vs. Arizona (11/18), he suffered a leg injury which has sidelined him for the past four games… The team is hoping they will have him back this week for their contest at Pittsburgh… Second-year receiver Larry Foster has started three games (vs. Cincinnati Oct. 28, at San Francisco Nov. 4 and vs. Minnesota Dec. 16) at the receiver slot beside Morton and has played an important role on several special teams units… Desmond Howard, who acts as the team's kick and punt return specialist, is seeing more action at the receiver position… His 36-yard touchdown reception against the Titans (10/21) in the fourth quarter was his first receiving touchdown as a Lion and first since 1995… Howard suffered a shoulder injury at Arizona (11/18) that sidelined him for several games, however he did return to action at Tampa Bay (12/9)… 2001 fifth-round draft choice Scotty Anderson was inactive for the team's first five games, however he has played a prominent role with the offense since that time (three starts)… Anderson made his first start as a Lion vs. Green Bay (11/22) and also caught the first touchdown pass of his career, which was a 29-yard reception to pull the Lions within two points with less than 20 seconds remaining... His 69-yard reception last week vs. Minnesota was only one yard short of being a touchdown and also set up the Lions' second touchdown of the game. RUNNING BACK: RB James Stewart, who was voted as the team's offensive MVP in 2000, returns for his second season with the Lions… Stewart's hard north-south running style has proven to be very effective in the new West Coast offense… Not only can he carry the load, but Mornhinweg has been very impressed with Stewart's ability to catch the football out of the backfield… Stewart has rushed for a total of 615 yards on 128 carries (4.8 yards per carry avg.) and has caught 22 passes for 241 yards and one touchdown… His 56-yard reception at Chicago (12/2) was the longest of his career… He was inactive for four games due to an ankle sprain, however returned to the starting lineup vs. Green Bay (11/22) where he rushed for 102 yards on 14 carries… Stewart is averaging 5.7 yards per touch this season (including both rushing and receiving)… Veteran RB Lamont Warren made his presence felt during the preseason as he showcased both his running and pass-catching ability… Warren serves as a third-down back and spells Stewart when needed, although he did make his first start of the year against the Bengals (10/28) due to an ankle sprain to Stewart… Reuben Droughns, who originally was drafted by the Lions in the third round of the 2000 draft, saw the most extensive playing time of his career while Stewart was out with an ankle injury (started three contests)… Against Tampa (11/11), he recorded the first touchdown of his career when he caught an eight-yard touchdown reception to tie the game at 17 apiece late in the fourth quarter… Seven-year veteran FB Cory Schlesinger is the team's bruising lead blocker… Schlesinger, who signed a four-year contract extension in the off-season, has showcased his capability of catching the ball out of the backfield as he caught a career-high six receptions vs. Green Bay (11/22)… At Arizona (11/18), he caught four passes for a single-game career high 60 yards… He is currently ranked second on the team with 46 receptions for 375 yards (both represent single-season career highs)… Also at fullback is Brock Olivo, who contributes heavily on special teams… On Nov. 19, the Lions added depth to the running back position as they signed rookie Aveion Cason to the active roster. QUARTERBACK: Charlie Batch was the go-to guy at quarterback for the Lions' offense until he suffered a separated shoulder at Chicago (12/2) which will sideline him for the remainder of the season… He was placed on the Injured Reserve list on Dec. 5… Batch threw for a then single-game career-high 345 yards, 31 completions and tied a career mark with three touchdown passes at Minnesota (10/14)… He followed up that career day with an outstanding performance vs. Tennessee

-of-42 attempts for three touchdowns nearly helped the Lions come-from-behind victory attempt… At Arizona (11/18), Batch broke several franchise single-game records when he completed 36-of-62 passes for 436 yards and three touchdowns… With Batch's injury, rookie Mike McMahon saw his first career start at Tampa Bay (12/2) and during his second start vs. Minnesota (12/16) last week, he led the Lions to their first victory of the season… McMahon set career marks in several categories, including: attempts (28), completions (15), yards passing (241), yards rushing (74 on 12 attempts) and he also scored on a one-yard touchdown run… McMahon showcased his athletic ability on national television against the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving Day when he engineered two touchdown drives late in the fourth quarter to pull the Lions within two points... He stepped in for Batch one series during the first half and two series during the second half against the Packers (completed 9-of-20 for 89 yards and a touchdown, also scored on the two-point conversion)… At Chicago (12/2), McMahon was inserted in place of Batch in the fourth quarter and helped to set up Hanson's 40-yard field goal (wide

LINEBACKER: The linebacking corps has undergone several changes due to injuries… Two-time Bro Bowler Stephen Boyd was placed on IR (Nov. 19) due to a back injury suffered against the Vikings (10/14)… Third-year pro Chris Claiborne has moved into the starting middle linebacker position… Claiborne, who played middle linebacker during his college campaign at USC, played very solid football during his first game in the middle against the Titans (10/21) after recording 15 tackles (6 solo, 9 assists), two passes defended and one interception… He also had a very solid game at Chicago (12/2) when he recorded a game-high 14 tackles… Claiborne currently leads the team with 128 tackles and is tied for second place on the team with four sacks… His sack and forced fumble on Packers QB Brett Favre on Thanksgiving Day gave the Lions their only lead of the day as DE James Hall gathered the fumble and ran it in for an eight-yard touchdown… He recorded his second interception of the season after the ball bounced threw Barrett Green's hands he made a great catch to set up the Lions' offense with great field position… In Claiborne's place on the right side is Barrett Green (second-round pick in 2000), who had been the team’s nickel ‘backer… Against the 49ers he recorded a career-high 15 tackles (six solo) along with a forced a fumble… Allen Aldridge continues to reside on the left side of the linebacking corps… Veteran Scott Kowalkowski has not only been invaluable as a backup for the middle linebacker position, but is a consistent special teams contributor… Nickel backer Clint Kriewaldt has the speed to cover and the knack for the ball to lay a big hit… Kriewaldt saw his most extensive action on defense at Minnesota when Boyd was out with a back injury and the team used a 5-2 defensive front... On Oct. 17, the Lions added depth to the linebacker unit when they signed Khari Samuel, who originally was a third-round draft choice of the Chicago Bears in 1999… Seven-year veteran Brian Williams was added for depth on Dec. 7. DEFENSIVE SECONDARY: The Lions have a very talented secondary, though they have been battling injuries throughout the season… The secondary has been hit hard with injuries stemming from last year and the 2001 preseason…. CB Robert Bailey was placed on the Injured Reserve list on Dec. 4 after suffering a neck injury vs. Green Bay on Thanksgiving (Nov. 22)… He also announced his decision to retire after a very successful career in which he won two Super Bowl rings (with Baltimore last year and with the Dallas Cowboys in 1995)… Terry Fair, who started and played extremely well during the team's first 12 games at cornerback, injured his right foot and will likely miss the remainder of the season… Strong safety Ron Rice has been one of the most consistent players in the secondary, however he is also out for the season after being placed on Injured Reserve due to a back and neck injury… The Lions added depth at safety just before the final preseason game against Tennessee when they signed six-year veteran Tommy Bennett (started in 2001 opener at strong safety)… Although Bennett received a four-game suspension by the NFL for violating the league's banned substance policy and he will also miss the remainder of the season… S Kywin Supernaw (started first three games of his career late last year) had surgery to fix a herniated disc in his neck, and he was placed on the Injured Reserve list… CB Bryant Westbrook, who was playing at a Pro Bowl level until rupturing his Achilles tendon last year at Minnesota (11/30/00), made his first start of the season last week vs. Minnesota… At Chicago (12/2), he intercepted his first pass of the year… In his place is free agent acquisition CB Todd Lyght… Lyght brings with him 10 years of experience from the Rams’ organization… Last week vs. Minnesota (12/16), Lyght recorded his fourth interception of the year and returned it 59 yards for a touchdown to give the Lions an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter… His interception against the Vikings was his first as a Lion and against the 49ers (11/4) he made a great play to keep his feet in bounds for his second interception of the year… At Arizona (11/18), Lyght gave the team added spark in the second quarter after recording his third interception as a Lion and 34th of his career… CB Jimmy Wyrick saw the most

LIONS NOTABLES OOFFFFEENNSSIIVVEE OOUUTTPPUUTTSS Detroit has been developing its offensive fire-power in the 2001 season as the Lions continue to adjust and adapt to the West Coast offense. Currently, the Lions are ranked sixth in the NFL in team passing and they are 14th overall in team offense. Among NFC teams, Detroit ranks fifth in passing and is seventh overall in total offense. Ø Last season, the Lions ended the 2000 campaign ranked 25th in passing (167.2

yards/gm). This year, the offense is currently ranked fifth in team passing in the NFL by netting 231.5 yards per game. In the NFC, the Lions' passing attack is ranked fifth in the conference.

Ø In the Lions first win of the 2001 season, the team totaled 167 rushing yards on 35 carries (4.8 avg.) and scored two touchdowns last week vs. Minnesota. Leading the way were RB James Stewart (20 rushes for 91 yards) and QB Mike McMahon (12 rushes for 74 yards and 1 TD). The Lions’ output of 167 yards equaled the team’s high of the season previous gained vs. Green Bay Nov. 22.

Ø With the return of RB James Stewart, who missed the previous four games due to injury, the Lions rushed for a then season high 167 yards on 25 attempts (6.7 avg.) vs. Green Bay Nov. 22. In the previous four games, the Lions rushed for a total of 224 yards (56.0 yds/gm) as Stewart was sidelined. On the season, Stewart has accumulated a 4.8 yards per carry rushing average (128 attempts for 615 yards and one TD).

Ø Behind the record-setting performance by QB Charlie Batch at Arizona Nov. 18, the Lions’ offense set several team records and collected some of the franchise’s highest totals in other team offensive categories. The Lions’ 62 pass attempts

-game record by surpassing the previous high of 57 attempts accomplished vs. Chicago 10/9/88. The team’s 36 completions are better than the 33 completions tossed at Cleveland 9/28/86 and vs. Green Bay 10/25/87. The Lions’ established a new record for net passing yards by airing out 429 yards, which is better than the previous high of 395 vs. Minnesota 11/23/95. And the 22 first downs gained on pass plays is a new record, passing the old team mark of 20 set vs. Minnesota 11/23/95.

Ø Also at Arizona Nov. 18, the Lions garnered the fourth-highest tally of offensive plays in a single game when the team ran 85 plays (63 passing and 22 rushing). The 30 total first downs (22 passing, four rushing and four penalty) is tied for the second-highest single-game total in Lions’ history. The Lions gained 30 first downs (17 rushing, 11 passing and two penalty) vs. Washington 9/30/51.

Ø Detroit’s offense geared up over a three-week span (vs. St. Louis Oct. 8, at Minnesota Oct. 14 and vs. Tennessee Oct. 21) when the Lions totaled 1,154 yards of offense in those games (879 passing yards and 275 rushing yards), for an average of 384.7 yards per game. The offense has not tallied that many yards in three-straight games since gaining 1,310 yards in games vs. Chicago 11/27/97, at Miami 12/7/97 and at Minnesota 12/14/97.

Ø Over a two game-stretch (at Minnesota Oct. 14 and vs. Tennessee Oct. 21), the Lions’ offense registered 820 yards of offense (650 yards passing and 170 yards rushing), which is the highest total since gaining 920 yards in consecutive games-- vs. Chicago 11/27/97 (496 yards) and at Miami 12/7/97 (424 yards).

Ø Detroit tallied a then season-best 457 yards of total offense (129 rushing/345 yards passing) at Minnesota Oct. 14. The Lions’ total was the most yards gained by an offensive unit since chewing up 496 yards (222 rushing/274 passing) vs. Chicago Nov. 27, 1997.

Ø Against St. Louis, Detroit completed 26-of-34 passes for a 76.5 completion percentage. That marked the highest percentage of passes completed by the Lions’ offense since QB Charlie Batch was 16-of-19 (84.2%) vs. Chicago Oct. 4, 1998. QB Ty Detmer completed 15-of-18 passes (83.3%) and Batch was 11-of-16 (68.8%).

GGEETTTTIINNGG DDEEFFEENNSSIIVVEE Ø Last week vs. Minnesota, CB Todd Lyght intercepted QB Todd Bouman and returned the pass 59 yards for a touchdown

to give the Lions an early 7-0 lead. The interception marked the 35th of his 11-year career and the team-leading fourth of the season. It also marked the fifth touchdown of his career. At Minnesota on Oct. 14, he recorded his first interception as a Lion. He picked off his second pass of the season (33rd of career) at San Francisco Nov. 4. His third interception was at Arizona Nov. 18 (34th of career).

Ø CB Bryant Westbrook collected his first interception of the season at Chicago Dec. 2, and it marked his first pick since coming back from a ruptured Achilles injury. His last interception was a 101-yarder vs. New England on Thanksgiving Day Nov. 23, 2000. His interception at Chicago occurred almost one year to the day of his injury last season (Nov. 30, 2000). Westbrook returned to the starting lineup for the first time last week vs. Minnesota on the right side since suffering his Achilles injury last season.

Ø DE James Hall returned his first career fumble for a touchdown vs. Green Bay Nov. 22. Hall picked up a fumble forced by LB Chris Claiborne and returned it eight yards for the Lions’ first touchdown of the game. Claiborne recorded his fourth sack of the season as he dropped QB Brett Favre for a 10-yard loss and caused the fumble on the play.

Ø Hall had a career day rushing the quarterback last week at Tampa Bay by recording a career-high 3.5 sacks (24.5 yards loss). The 3.5 sacks is a team high this season and is the most by a Lions’ pass rusher in a single game since DE Robert Porcher recorded 3.5 quarterback takedowns vs. Indianapolis 11/23/97.

Ø CB Robert Bailey picked off a 49ers QB Jeff Garcia offering in the first quarter of the Lions’ game at San Francisco Nov. 4 and returned it for a 74-yard touchdown. It was his second interception returned for a touchdown in his career, with his first (24-yarder) coming Oct. 4, 1992 vs. San Francisco while playing with for the Los Angeles Rams. His 74-yard return also marked the longest interception return in his 11-year career.

Ø On Sept. 23, 2001 vs. Cleveland, CB Terry Fair moved into a tie for fourth place on the Lions' career return touchdowns list with Levi Johnson (five). Fair's 26-yard interception return for a touchdown against QB Tim Couch helped to bring his interception returns for touchdown total to two. The remaining three returns for touchdowns came in the form of two kickoff returns and one fumble recovery.

Ø LB Chris Claiborne is leading the team with 128 tackles (75 solo) on the season, and has started as the team’s middle linebacker over the past eight games. He will remain the starter in the middle for the remainder of the 2001 season, with

LB Stephen Boyd on Injured Reserve due to a back injury. Claiborne has recorded two interceptions this season (career season high), including a pick last week vs. Minnesota in the Lions’ first win of the season.

Ø In his first career start at middle linebacker, Claiborne intercepted his second-career pass and returned it six yards, and he registered a career single-game high 15 tackles (six solo). Claiborne had started 35 previous games at outside linebacker since becoming the Lions’ first-round draft choice (ninth overall) in the 1999 NFL Draft. Claiborne was the 1998 Butkus Award winner (USC’s first-ever) while playing middle linebacker in college.

Ø LB Barrett Green collected his first career sack (a 10-yard drop) vs. Tennessee Oct. 21 and he made a career-high 11 tackles (seven solo) in his first career start. He was inserted in the starting lineup at outside linebacker as LB Chris Claiborne shifted to the middle spot. Green has since improved his single-game best for tackles with 15 at San Francisco Nov. 4, and he has garnered double-digit tackle tallies six of the last seven games. He is second on the team with 106 stops (55 solo).

Ø S Ron Rice, recorded 14 tackles (five solo) vs. Tennessee Oct. 21, which put him over the 500- tackle mark for his career. Rice has collected 547 tackles (353 solo) in his seven seasons since signing as an undrafted rookie free agent with Detroit following the 1995 NFL Draft. Having been placed on Injured Reserve due to a back and neck injury, Rice will finish with 70 tackles (28 solo) on the season.

Ø S Kurt Schulz returned vs. Cincinnati Oct. 28, which marked his first game-action of the season since he played at the New York Giants Nov. 19, 2000. Last season, he missed the team’s final five games due to an ankle injury and this

rst five games because of a back injury suffered during the preseason. He posted the league’s highest interception tally (seven) when he left the lineup last season, and he returned against the Bengals by collecting his first interception (29th of career) of the 2001 season. Schulz garnered a team-high seven tackles vs. Cincinnati. He added a second interception at Tampa Bay Dec. 9. In 19 games with Detroit, he has intercepted nine passes.

““LLIITTTTLLEE MMAANN”” SSTTEEWWAARRTT MMAAKKIINNGG BBIIGG IIMMPPRREESSSSIIOONN RB James Stewart is the workhorse running weapon that the Lions envisioned when they signed him as an unrestricted free agent from Jacksonville February 14, 2000. In 2001, Stewart has rushed for 615 yards on 128 carries (4.8 avg.) and one touchdown, and has 22 receptions for 241 yards (11.0 avg.) and one touchdown reception. Ø Stewart has been mightily productive when he touches the ball this season. He has recorded 150 touches (128 rushes and

22 receptions) for a combined tally of 856 total yards, averaging 5.7 yards per touch. Ø Of the nine games Stewart has played in 2001, he has averaged over 5.0 rushing yards per game in four of those contests.

He rushed 13 times for 88 yards (6.8 avg.) vs. St. Louis Oct. 8, 16 times for 108 yards (6.8 avg.) at Minnesota Oct. 14, 14 times for 102 yards (7.3 avg.) vs. Green Bay Nov. 22 and 15 times for 78 yards (5.2 avg.) at Tampa Bay Dec. 9.

Ø At Chicago Dec. 2, Stewart scored his first rushing touchdown of the season, a three-yard run, and caught a career-long 53-yard pass on the Lions’ 95-yard touchdown scoring drive in the first quarter. The 95-yard drive (10 plays, 5:55) marked the longest scoring drive (yardage) of the season for the Lions.

Ø After missing four-straight games due to an ankle injury, Stewart rushed for his 11th career 100-yard game (fifth as Lions and second of 2001) vs. Green Bay Nov. 22. He recorded 102 yards on 14 carries (7.3 avg.) and had a season-long run of 38 yards. He was a major part of the Lions’ rushing attack that gained 167 yards, after averaging 53 yards in the previous five-game span.

Ø Stewart rushed for a season-high 108 yards at Minnesota Oct. 14 on 16 carries (6.8 avg.). His 100-yard rushing effort was the 10th of his career and the fourth since joining the Lions prior to 2000 season. He also caught three passes for 22 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown that sparked the Lions’ offense in the second half.

Ø Oct. 8 vs. St. Louis, Stewart had 13 carries for 88 yards (6.8 avg.), including a then season-long run of 30 yards. He also caught four passes for 36 yards.

Ø The Lions are 7-1 (.875) in games that Stewart records more-than-20 rushing attempts, and are 9-3 (.750) when Stewart rushes 20-or-more times in a contest, including last week’s win vs. Minnesota when he carried the ball 20 times for 91 yards.

Ø Stewart is in the NFL record books as one of five players in league history to rush for five touchdowns in a game (vs. Philadelphia 10/12/97).

HHEERREE’’SS JJOOHHNNNNIIEE…… WR Johnnie Morton has become one of the Lions’ most consistent offensive weapons over the past five seasons. The eight-year veteran is having an outstanding 2001 season, having recorded four 100-yard receiving outings. He leads the team in receptions (60) and receiving yards (947) and has three touchdowns. Morton is on a 70-catch, 1,150-yard season pace. Ø Morton has played in 112 consecutive games (including regular and postseason games). The last contest he did not see

action in was the Lions' playoff contest at Green Bay on Dec. 31, 1994. Morton has seen action in 111-straight regular season contests, with his last missed game occurring at the New York Jets December 10, 1994. He has started in 104 of the last 112 games since the beginning of the 1995 season, with his only missed starts due primarily to specified formations made by coaching decisions to begin games. At Chicago Dec. 2, Morton started his 100th career regular season game.

Ø Morton needs 53 receiving yards to chart his fourth 1,000-yard receiving season in the past five years. Ø By collecting a season-high 153 yards receiving at Arizona Nov. 22, Morton became the second player in Lions' history to

record 6,000 career receiving yards, with the other being Herman Moore (9,174 yards, 1991-). Morton surpassed that receiving plateau on his season-long 76-yard immaculate one-handed grab over the middle, as he proceeded to get off the ground and run for an additional 33 yards after not being touched down. His 153-yard effort is also the second-highest single-game outing during his career, with his best being a 176-yard production vs. Chicago 9/22/96.

Ø Morton's 153-yard effort at Arizona Nov. 22 was his 18th career 100-yard receiving outing and fourth of the 2001 season, which is the second-highest career tally in Lions’ franchise history.

Ø Morton recorded a season-high nine receptions for 113 yards and caught one touchdown vs. Tennessee Oct. 21. This was Morton’s third 100-yard receiving game in 2001, and it marked the 17th time in his career he has totaled 100 yards in a game.

Ø Morton’s other 100-yard receiving efforts include: Catching five receptions for 111 yards in the season opener at Green Bay Sept. 9 and gathering five receptions for 100 yards at Cleveland, which marked the 15th and 16th times during his career he has accomplished that feat. In 1999, Morton collected five 100-yard receiving efforts, which is the most he tallied during a single-season in his eight-year NFL career.

Ø His 100-yard outing in the first two games of the season was the third time in Morton’s career he had back-to-back 100-yard efforts (107 yards at Tampa Bay 12/12/99 and 100 yards at Chicago 12/19/99; 120 yards vs. Chicago 11/27/97 and 171 yards at Miami 12/7/97).

Ø With two receptions at San Francisco Nov. 4, Morton moved past Brett Perriman (428 receptions, 1991-96) for second place on the Lions’ all-time career receptions list. With 452 career receptions, he is now behind only Herman Moore (670 receptions, 1991-) for the top spot on that chart.

Ø Morton’s spectacular 20-yard diving catch in the back of the endzone at Minnesota Oct. 14 moved him into sole possession of fourth-place on the Lions’ all-time career receiving touchdowns list with 33. With that TD reception, he passed Cloyce Box (32 TDs, 1949-50 and ‘50-54) on that chart.

Ø His 18-yard grab vs. Tennessee was Morton’s 35th career touchdown (34 receiving and one kickoff return), and it moved him past Doak Walker (34 TDs, 1950-55) for seventh place on the Lions’ all-time career total touchdowns list. At Minnesota Oct. 14, his TD grab moved him past James Jones (33 TDs, 1983-88) on that list.

Ø With his five receptions at Cleveland Sept. 23, Morton became the third player in Lions' history to record 400 career receptions.

Ø Morton caught his 32nd career TD pass at Cleveland, moving him into a tie for fourth-place on the Lions' all-time career receiving touchdowns list with Cloyce Box (1949-50, ’52-54).

GGEETTTTIINNGG AA KKIICCKK OOUUTT OOFF HHAANNSSOONN In two-time Pro Bowler Jason Hanson, the Lions are blessed with one of the NFL's top all-around kickers. He is deadly accurate inside the 50-yard line. He continues to move closer to the Lions’ all-time kicking records set by Eddie Murray during his 12 years with Detroit. Hanson is perfect (four-of-four) on attempts from 50-59 yards this season. Ø After struggling at Chicago Dec. 2 (rare three field goals missed), Hanson rebounded immediately at Tampa Bay Dec. 9 by

placing the Lions in a position to capture their first victory of the season by making four-of-four field goals and accumulating all 12 of the Lions points. It was the 12th time in his career he has made at least four field goals in a game. Now with four 50-yarders this season, he tied his career single season-high of four that he recorded in 1999 (four-of-eight that season).

Ø Hanson also made his 21st career field goal from 50-yards or more at Tampa Bay Dec. 9 when he connected on a 50-yarder. In doing so, he became the sixth player in NFL history to accomplish that feat.

Ø He has made his last six attempts from 50-59 yards (including four-of-four this season), and has made six of his last seven field goal attempts from 50+ yards, with his only miss being a 65-yarder at Minnesota Oct. 14.

Ø By connecting on a 54-yarder vs. Green Bay Nov. 22, Hanson became the eighth player in NFL history to record at least 20 career 50-yard field goals. The 54-yarder tied (accomplished four other times) for the third longest field goal made in Lions’ history. He also nailed a 33-yarder vs. the Packers, as he finished the day two-for-two on field goal attempts.

Ø On the first extra point Hanson kicked at Arizona Nov. 18, he became the second player in Lions' history to score 1,000 career points. The first player in Lions’ history to reach that mark was Eddie Murray, who scored 1,113 points during his 12-year career (1980-91) in Detroit.

Ø Hanson was two-for-two on field goal attempts vs. Cincinnati Oct. 28, including a 51-yarder. His 51-yard effort was the 19th field goal made beyond 50 yards in his career.

Ø Hanson had his consecutive field goal streak stopped at 13 when he failed to connect on a 65-yard field goal attempt at Minnesota Oct. 14. He entered the game hitting 11-straight field goals, then proceeded to make a 19-yarder and a 51-yarder (18th of his career) before his missed attempt.

Ø Hanson was two-for-two on field goal attempts in the Lions’ 2001 season opener at Green Bay, which extended his consecutive field goals made to 11. He did not attempt a field goal in the Lions' second game at Cleveland or in the team's third game vs. St. Louis.

Ø Hanson ranks in second-place on all five of the Lions’ major career scoring and kicking records. His career totals of 238 field goals, 297 field goal attempts, 1,039 points scored, 325 extra points and 330 extra points attempted all trail Eddie Murray’s career totals. To eclipse Murray’s records, Hanson needs to connect on seven and attempt 29 field goals, score 75 points and attempt and make 57 extra points apiece. Murray’s career totals include 244 field goals in 325 attempts, 1,113 points scored and 381 extra points in 386 attempts.

Ø His seven points in the 2000 season finale vs. Chicago put him over the 100-point plateau for the sixth time in his first nine NFL seasons (101 points), and fourth year in a row. Among his 100-point seasons, he holds the top two spots on the team's all-time seasonal scoring list -- a team-record 132 points in 1995 and 130 points in '93.

Ø Hanson has scored 81 points in 2001, and he needs 19 points to reach the 100-point mark for the seventh time in his 10-year career.

Ø Detroit is 43-27 (.614) during Hanson's career when he kicks two-or-more field goals in a game. Also, the club is 23-8 (.742) when Hanson kicks three-or-more field goals, and is 11-1 (9.7) when he makes at least four field goals in a contest.

Jason Hanson 21 1992- DDEESSMMOONNDD’’SS HHAAPPPPYY RREETTUURRNNSS KR Desmond Howard has been incredibly thrilling since joining the Lions, as illustrated by him being named to his first career Pro Bowl in 2000, and he is well on his way to compete for a “return” trip to Hawaii. He has registered 43 kickoff returns for 1,136 yards, averaging 26.4 per return, and has 17 punt returns for 178 yards (10.5 avg.). Howard has also been more involved this year in the Lions’ offense, having totaled eight receptions for 110 yards and one touchdown. After sitting out two games due to a shoulder injury, Howard returned at Tampa Bay Dec. 9. Ø Among the top returners in the league, Howard ranks second in kickoff returns in the NFC and is third in the NFL with a

26.4 yards per return average. Ø Last week vs. Minnesota, Howard fielded four kickoff returns for 63 yards, which put him over the 7,000-yard mark in

career kickoff return yards. Howard now has 7,062 kickoff return yards in his nine-year NFL career. Ø At Tampa Bay Dec. 2, Howard moved past Alvin Hall (2,819 yards, 1981-85, ’87) for third place on the Lions’ all-time

career kickoff return yards list. Now with 2,909 kickoff return yards, he is behind Glyn Milburn (2,942 yards, 1996-97) for second place on that list.

Ø Howard moved up two notches on the Lions’ all-time career punt return yards list vs. Tampa Bay Nov. 11 when he gained 37 yards on four punt returns. He jumped into eighth place on that list (currently with 750 punt return yards), moving past Pat Studstill (716 yards, 1961-67) and Glyn Milburn (717 yards, 1996-97). He is now eight career punt return yards behind Yale Lary (758 yards, 1952-53 and ’56-64), who is in seventh place on that chart.

Ø His four punt returns vs. Tampa Bay Nov. 11 moved his career punt returns to 50, which qualifies him on the Lions’ all-time career punt return average list. With a 13.9 average (54 returns for 750 yards), Howard has the highest career punt return average in team history. Second on that list is Jack Christensen with a 12.75 punt return average (85 returns for 1,084 yards from 1951-58).

Ø Howard exploded over a two-week span (vs. Tennessee Oct. 21 and vs. Cincinnati Oct. 28) as a kickoff returner by returning seven kickoffs for 335 yards. He averaged 47.9 yards over the two contests, and had returns of 91, 65, 59 and 47 yards. Following this outbursts, teams have kicked away from Howard to minimize his ability to break games open as a returner.

Ø Oct. 28 vs. Cincinnati, Howard sparked the Lions’ comeback from a 21-6 deficit when he electrified the crowd with a 91-yard kickoff return near the end of the first half that led to the Lions’ first touchdown. His 91-yarder was his career-long in a regular season game. He is still looking for his first regular season kickoff return for a touchdown. His longest kickoff return was a 99-yard score in Super Bowl XXXI that led him to MVP honors in that championship affair.

Ø Howard’s 229 kickoff return yards (five returns, 45.8 avg.) vs. Cincinnati Oct. 28 set a new single-game career high. His previous career-best was 223 yards (10 returns, 22.3 avg.) at Seattle (10/26/97). He had returns of 30, 26, 91, 65 and 17 yards.

Ø His 229-yard tally vs. the Bengals is also the second-highest single-game total in Lions’ franchise history. Howard owns two of the top four single-game kickoff return yard totals in Lions’ history. He also collected 218 kickoff return yards last season vs. Tampa Bay (9/17/00), which is fourth-best.

Ø Also vs. Cincinnati, Howard returned his 100th kickoff return since joining the Lions. Now with 118 kickoff returns, he is fourth on the Lions’ all-time career kickoff returns list, and is behind Glyn Milburn (119 returns, 1996-97) for third place on that all-time chart.

Ø Howard had an exceptional day in key areas vs. Tennessee Oct. 21. His only catch of the game was a 36-yard touchdown reception with 1:18 left to play that tied the game on fourth-and-10. Coincidentally, his touchdown reception was his first receiving touchdown since recording a 15-yarder at Houston (10/1/95) while with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Howard ripped off his two longest kickoff returns for the season, up to that point, against the Titans by returning two first-half kickoffs for 47 and 59 yards.

Ø With 105 yards on two kickoff returns vs. Tennessee, Howard moved past Terry Fair (2,180 yards, 1998-) and Tommy Watkins (2,262 yards, 1962-67) for fourth place on the Lions’ all-time career kickoff return yards list.

Ø Oct. 8 vs. St. Louis, Howard surpassed the 2,000-yard mark in kickoff return yardage since joining the Lions. He surpassed Pat Studstill (1,924 yards) for sixth-place on the Lions’ all-time kickoff return yards list at Cleveland Sept. 23.

Ø With five kickoff returns at Minnesota Oct. 14, he moved past Tommy Watkins (91 returns, 1962-67) for fourth place on the Lions’ all-time career kickoff returns chart.

Ø Howard also ranks second in NFL history (along with five others) for having recorded three punt returns for touchdowns in a single season, while with Green Bay in 1996. Christiansen (1951) and Upchurch (1976) hold that all-time NFL record with four returns for score.

PPOORRCCHHEERR’’SS PPRREESSSSUURREESS DE Robert Porcher has become the Lions’ leader in career quarterback sacks by registering 84.5 and surpassing Al “Bubba” Baker’s previous record of 75.5 career QB takedowns. Porcher has been named to two of the last four Pro Bowls, and is having a superb 2001 season, recording 10.0 sacks, including four multi-sack games on the season. Ø Last week vs. Minnesota, Porcher's two sacks marked the 21st career multi-sack game of the year. Ø At San Francisco Nov. 4, Porcher collected his 20th career multi-sack game, by recording two sacks (14 yards loss), and he

also caused a fumble. On his first sack, he surpassed the 80-sack mark for his career, becoming the first player in Lions’ history to reach that mark.

Ø Porcher collected his 19th career multi-sack outing of his career with a two-sack performance at Minnesota Oct. 14. Ø Porcher became the Lions’ leader in career quarterback sacks on his first of two sacks against Cleveland Sept. 23. He

broke Al “Bubba” Baker’s mark of 75.5 that he recorded from 1978-82. Ø Porcher recorded his 18th career multi-sack effort at Cleveland Sept. 23 with a two-sack effort. Ø Porcher’s 67 sacks since 1996 are the most quarterback takedowns recorded by any NFL player in that span. New York

Michael Strahan is second with 66 sacks since ‘96. Ø Porcher also ranks eighth on the Lions’ career tackles list (since 1973) with 580 career stops. He is behind Jimmy

DDOONN’’TT MMEESSSS WWIITTHH RROOGGEERRSS Rookie DT Shaun Rogers has been making his presence known along the defensive front since being drafted by the Lions in the 2001 NFL Draft out of the University of Texas. The Lions traded up into the second round to make him the 61st player taken in the league’s annual selection meeting. Rogers has emerged as one of the league’s leading candidates for Defensive Rookie of the Year. Ø Rogers upped his 2001 sacks tally to 3.0 with by accumulated a half-of-a-sack at Tampa Bay Dec. 9. Ø After coaches film review, Rogers was credited with 10 tackles vs. Green Bay Nov. 22 (second 10-tackle performance of

season), and registered a season-high three tackles for losses. Ø Nov. 11 vs. Tampa Bay, Rogers added to his sacks tally on the season with one quarterback takedown (five-yard loss)

against the Buccaneers. Ø He placed his stamp on the Lions’ attempt at their first win of the season when he blocked two field goal attempts at San

Francisco Nov. 4. His second FG block was on a 19-yard attempt with 1:56 left in the fourth quarter that gave the Lions a chance to tie the game with one final drive. Rogers also blocked a 49-yard attempt in the second quarter of the game. His blocked field goal marked the first FB block since James Jones batted an attempt away at New Orleans Sept. 3, 2000.

Ø Through 12 games, Rogers is third on the team with 78 tackles (unofficial team totals), and has 49 solo stops. He has illustrated the ability to make the tackle despite double teams and he continues to contribute on defense in both rushing and passing situations.

Ø With 78 tackles on the season, Rogers could possibly reach the 100-tackle mark this year. The last Lions’ defensive lineman to record 100 tackles in a single season was DE Michael Cofer, who registered 107 stops in 1984.

Ø Rogers recorded his first double-digit tackle outing of his career when he collected 11 tackles vs. Tennessee Oct. 21. Ø Rogers collected his first career sack and first career multi-sack outing (1.5 for nine yards loss) at Minnesota Oct. 14. Ø Along with his 11-tackle game vs. Tennessee Oct. 21, he has also garnered an eight and a nine-tackle game. Rogers

registered nine tackles (six solo) at Cleveland Sept. 23 and eight tackles (three solo) vs. St. Louis Oct. 8. Ø According to coaches’ films, Rogers has garnered 12 tackles for losses this season, and he batted down two passes for the

first time in his career at Chicago Dec. 2. CCOORRYY SSLLEEDDGGEE HHAAMMMMEERR FB Cory Schlesinger has blossomed in the Lions’ new offense and is arguably one of the league’s best all-around fullbacks. He is a key component of the Lions' running game as a bruising blocking back, and is an important part of the team’s passing attack. Ø On the season, Schlesinger is the Lions’ second-leading receiver with 46 receptions for 375 yards (both career highs). He

has gained 120 yards on 37 carries and has three rushing touchdowns (also career highs). Ø By recording 46 catches for 375 receiving yards this season, Schlesinger has more than doubled his receiving totals of 41

receptions for 308 yards over the previous six seasons combined. Ø Schlesinger is tied for ninth place among NFL running backs this season with 46 receptions. He has the highest tally of

any fullback in the NFC, and is second only to Larry Centers for the most receptions by a fullback in the NFL. Ø Over a two-week span (at Chicago Dec. 2 and vs. Green Bay Nov. 22), Schlesinger led the team in receptions with six

grabs (single-game career best). At Chicago Dec. 2, he recorded six receptions for 40 yards. Ø Nov. 22 vs. Green Bay, Schlesinger had a team-high six receptions. Against the Packers, he gained 41 receiving yards,

added five rushes for 39 yards and ran for a season-long run of 26 yards off a fake punt. Ø At Arizona Nov. 18, and for the second-consecutive game, Schlesinger recorded a one-yard rushing touchdown as he dove

over the top on the goal line. He also caught four passes for a career single-game career high 60 yards, including a 38-yarder that helped set up the Lions’ second touchdown of the game.

Ø Schlesinger had one of the best games in his career vs. Tampa Bay Nov. 11 when he caught a then career-tying single-game high five passes for a then career single-game high 54 yards, and he added seven rushes for 13 yards and one touchdown. His five receptions and 54 yards moved his seasonal total to 26 catches for 191 yards, which set career single-season highs. He scored his first-career rushing touchdown on a one-yard plunge. That play was set up by his three-yard leap over the top on fourth-and-one at the four-yard line.

Ø At San Francisco Nov. 4, Schlesinger caught his 21st pass of the season, which tied a new career single-season high. His previous single-season career highs as a receiver were set in 1999 when he caught 21 passes for 151 yards and scored one touchdown.

Ø He has caught passes in each of the team’s first 13 games, which is his career-long in terms of consecutive games with a reception. On two other occasions, he caught passes over four game stretches, one streak occurring in 1999 and the other in 1997.

Ø Schlesinger is also reprising his role as a significant contributor on special teams, especially on both of the Lions’ cover units (kickoff and punt teams). He has collected 14 special teams tackles in 2001, and serves as one of the wedge-busters on the kickoff unit.

Ø P John Jett captured two Super Bowl rings with the Dallas Cowboys when he was that team's punter in Super Bowl XXVIII and XXX.

Ø Lions Senior Director of Football Administration/Staff Counsel Martin Mayhew played for the Washington Redskins' Super Bowl XXVI Championship squad, alongside Matt Millen. And Head Athletic Trainer Al Bellamy was on Washington's athletic training staff and Lions strength and conditioning coach Jason Arapoff was a conditioning assistant on the same Redskins' Super Bowl XXVI team.

Ø LB Brian Williams, recently claimed of waivers (Dec. 4), earned a Super Bowl ring as a member of the Super Bowl XXXI champion Green Bay Packers.

Ø Lions Senior Vice President of Communications and Marketing Bill Keenist was a public relations assistant for the Washington Redskins when that team won Super Bowl XVII.
