Open Access to data: (DESY/FS: present state of discussion) - remark: in synchrotron and FEL science the experiment at large scale facilities is in general only a small step from a scientific question to an answer – though often the bottleneck - the time needed to arrive at an answer may take years and several campaigns of experiments - discussion in DESY Photon Science Committee (PSC) and Science Council (SC) !! Intellectual Property of the data remains with the ‘authors’ (PI) - open question: who is responsible for the data safety? !! PSC and SC: authors are responsible, DESY might provide archiving service

Summary
•! Brilliant photon beams are excellent tools for studying the structure and dynamics of matter in a wide area of scientific fields
•! DESY photon sources are very well prepared to match future requirements in the field of photon science - PETRA III: high energy sources of lowest emittance for hard X-ray applications with very small focal spot sizes - FLASH: VUV and soft X-ray FEL for time resolved high brilliance applications - European XFEL: watching molecules and atoms in real time on their intrinsic length and time scale
•! DESY: establishment of an appropriate environment for photon based research
