As parents, we want our child to have the best possible opportunities life has to offer, without limitations, and we strive to ensure this, but sometimes a child is faced with an exceptional challenge. Desire2Read is the result of such a challenge.

My son, Kyle, was enthusiastic about outdoor sports and games, and adept with Lego and other building activities. Acknowledging his strengths was easy. By grade one, however, he showed learning and behavioral challenges as he struggled with the alphabet; by the end of grade two, he showed no recognition of letters or related sounds. As Kyle fell increasingly behind his peers in language skills and knowledge, I attempted to teach him to read. Armed with exercise books, teaching guides and learning tools, we soon discovered we were engaged in a losing battle, and what’s more, quality family time with my younger children became compromised. But now what?

Could I let my son accept these limitations?

To supplement my efforts, in grade three, Kyle received one on one reading support from the

learning assistant at his school. Sadly, he did not progress. At once, my worst fears were realized: his school friends avoided him and he then played with children two and three years younger. Kyle didn’t belong.

Altogether, these warning signs prompted an assessment of Kyle by a private child psychologist where he was diagnosed with severe ADHD, Dyslexia, and Oppositional Defiance Disorder. Conversely, his Academic Assessment test results showed that Kyle scored above average in intelligence so he was referred to Orton-Gillingham language remediation to help him overcome his Dyslexia. Finally, the direction and focus Kyle needed.

From there, I gained practical experience teaching in the Psychology Department at Vancouver Children’s Hospital in affiliation with CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Read More

Desire2Read brings out the gifts.

A student might have difficulty distinguishing differences in sounds (called phonemes) made by individual letters or a group of sounds made by a word. This is referred to as auditory processing disorder and results in difficulty with understanding verbal instructions and spelling. A student who struggles to distinguish differences in shapes or letters (called graphemes) will have difficulty with reading.

They might rotate or reverse letters, numbers and even whole words. This is referred to as visual processing disorder. Most commonly, auditory and visual processing disorder is a combined problem to varying degrees. Our trained and experienced staff can accurately identify auditory and visual processing disorders.

The best approach is to take immediate action – and get help now.

Desire2Read has built its foundations on correctly assessing early signs of reading difficulties and bringing the student above grade expectations.

Page 8: Desire 2 Read

Each student has their own unique pattern of learning disabilities which necessitate specific teaching strategies to bridge the disability with an effective tutoring approach.

Why is it important for a tutor to recognize specific learning disabilities?

Here are some key points to consider:

A learning disability may be in the form of auditory or visual perception and/or processing.

Some learning disabilities effect the integration of information involving sequencing, abstraction or organization. While other learning disabilities may be affecting the working memory, short term memory, long term memory or any combination of these.

Some students have a language/ motor output disability where the student may speak well, yet have great difficulty gathering their thoughts and finding the right words in verbal or written form.

D2R believes it crucial for our tutors to be educated clinically and practically in recognizing specific language learning disabilities, and have a clear understanding of the unique ramifications associated with each student’s disabilities and abilities.

The following check list will help guide you:

• reading has become a time of frustration and struggle

• your child is reading and writing below their expected grade level

• your child has not been successful with other reading programs

• your child has been diagnosed with dyslexia, or other language based learning disabilities

• your child is separated during class time for learning assistance

• your child does not get enough individual learning assistance to make a difference (a minimum of 2-3 hours weekly of one 2 one tutoring) (link)

Page 9: Desire 2 Read

Language learning disabilities such as dyslexia do not have a quick fix silver bullet. It can take from one to three years to help a child reach grade level.

Beware of other commercial learning centre chains promising fast results in 4 to 8 week, and cost lots of money for they always result in disappointment.

Factors to consider are:

• the gap between your child’s ability and grade level expectation

• severity of your child’s reading challenge or disability

• other medical / psychological factors (diagnosed or undiagnosed) that affect learning

Why Desire2Read Tutoring Approach Works We believe reading is the foundation for learning and it is the single most important skill to master to achieve academic success. Students who are having difficulties with reading and writing require a different way to learn. Desire2Read is different from other methods in two ways: what is taught, and how it is taught. We build the foundations on solid principles.

The D2R approach…

The Orton-Gillingham Approach was developed in the early 1930’s by a professional group of teachers, psychologists and doctors. It has been scientifically proven to be the most effective method for teaching students with dyslexia and other language-based learning difficulties.

Desire2Read uses the scientifically acclaimed Orton-Gillingham approach to achieve consistent results.

The Orton-Gillingham Approach can be characterized as:

Multisensory. Our tutoring sessions are interactively engaging, reinforcing concepts with appropriate visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile teaching tools and aids that optimize learning.Structured. Tutors introduce a step by step sequential phonetic system of language, beginning with simple sounds, and building on each successive lesson learned. Tutors use learning strategies that ensure the student understands the reasoning behind the concepts.

Cumulative. The first step starts with single phonemes and progresses to multi-syllable words, rules, prefixes, root words, suffixes and morphology. As the students learn new material, learned concepts are incorporated into each subsequent lesson providing more practice.

Learn more about D2R Multisensory learning

Simultaneous multisensory learning is an interactive learning technique using visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile teaching tools and aids – to maximize learning and reach the student’s full potential. This approach is an important component of whole brain learning, especially for those students with language based learning difficulties.

This learning process promotes clear memories of letters and concepts that last a lifetime. Our tutors are very knowledgeable in choosing the appropriate teaching aids and use them in a special way that focuses the student’s attention, helps create a permanent memory, and provides a clear understanding. Your child will enjoy learning to read with us.

How Simultaneous Multisensory Learning Works:

When the student is writing, seeing or drawing the sounds, visual memory is being developed. painting or forming letters from blocks or clay, kinesthetic and tactile memory is being developed.

Hearing the sound and repeating a sound out loud, auditory memory is developed. Come see our multisensory learning environment, and experience the difference.
