Stories from the Field
Questions to ask before starting a community program:
• What do you REALLY mean when you say community? (Is it marketing?)
• Why are you choosing to engage this group and who determines these choices?
• What are the barriers of different communities in your city to coming to your institution? What barriers do you identify for this specific group?
• How will the institution AND this community benefit from the program?
• Who are the stakeholders in the community you’d like to engage? Have you talked to them?
• What does the community perceive as a barrier to coming to the museum?
• What is the sustainability of this program?
