Kevin Chiam, a graduate of Temasek Polytechnic’s School of Design, never dreamed that he would pursue a path in furniture design.

But a twist of fate brought him under the wing of promi-nent local furniture designer Nathan Yong, who is coinci-dentally an alumnus of Temasek Polytech-nic as well.

And as they say, the rest is history.

ZiN is the Dutch word for sense. The 22-year-old Chiam considers design in the modern world to be akin to a conversation between people and products.

Thus, common sense is of utmost importance and is often the foundation of good design.

Chiam, who is currently serving his national service while working on his dream of being a furniture designer, believes that without proper communication between both designer and consumer, there cannot be an end-product that would satisfy the user.

His philosophy is simple—design with common sense, such that the end product is intuitive yet simple.
