It’s almost asimportant as “location, location, location.” The exact definition ofgood differentiation—buyer appeal that makes your homes moreattractive than the ones down the block—changes with the timesand changes depending on where you are. Today, designers arereturning to inspirations largely ignored since before World War II:traditional European architecture in all its forms.

Mediterranean styles look right in California, French andEnglish styles show up well on the Atlantic Seaboard, and so forth.Whether the style says France, Spain, England or Italy, there’s aplace for stone as an enriching element.

Sometimes a simple refacing changes everything.

emodeling can be more demanding than new construction.Restoration, matching and structural changes can compoundthe difficulty and balloon the cost, but remodelers can sidestepmany of those problems and achieve a great effect by opting forresurfacing rather than reconstruction.

In a cost-conscious remodel, stone often gets dropped fromconsideration at the outset, simply because it seems to requireserious structural work. After all, a natural stone wall in anupstairs den might call for tearing everything apart, shoring upthe foundation and adding a new load-bearing wall.

That’s where Cultured Stone® veneers come in. Because aCultured Stone® wall weighs about a quarter as much as a full-

thickness natural stone wall, the structural challenges all butdisappear. You can use stone anywhere, outdoors and in. Whena nondescript chimney becomes stone, it’s no longernondescript. When an entry is surrounded in stone and thestone continues inside, the whole house assumes a newcharacter. A stone wall can turn a kitchen or a bathroom into ashowplace.

But don’t forget to take it all the way outdoors as well.

Just as bringing the stone indoors integratesthe interior of the house with the exterior,continuing the exterior stone into thesurroundings—or vice versa—integrates thehouse with the landscape and gives a uniformcharacter to the total property.

In the picture at the bottom of the next page,Fog Southern Ledgestone covers a zig-zagcomplex of garden walls. It brings the mainstructure visually down the hillside, joininghome and surroundings into one architecturalstatement and creating its own world of stone.

At the other end of the scale, Cultured Stone®

can fit into a setting’s natural stone so accuratelythat it looks right even when it’s side by sidewith the real thing. The picture at right provesthe point. The natural stone on the grounddisplays the same surface feel and coloring asthe wall above, which seems to grow right fromthe landscape. The Cultured Stone® is a blend oftwo textures, Southern Ledgestone and DressedFieldstone, in two colors, Bucks County andChardonnay.

The other pictures show two more variationson the theme. At the top of the next page, PewterGray Carolina Ledgestone appears on theexterior of the home and on the piers at thedriveway entry. Below it, a Craftsman-style homehas Winter Standard Stream Stone with 15%Skimmers on exterior walls and on landscapingwalls as well.

The point of this exercise is simple. Stonecan enhance a home inside, outside and inlandscaping. And when all three work together,the home achieves a special character that can’tbe achieved in any other way.

But sometimes therewon’t be enough natural stone available locally, or stonewon’t fit the budget. Cultured Stone® veneers solve bothproblems. ream it, design it, build it and sell it. We go through this processtime after time, and, though it sounds simple, there’s a lot of workin making it happen. You have to develop a relationship betweenarchitect and builder (or builder and client) based on trust,communication and credibility to carry a project through fromvision to award-winning home. Today there are ample tools thatmake it easy for you to communicate and illustrate the vision.

How do you sell a dream? One of our biggest challenges isgetting clients to understand and buy in to our architectural visionand recognize the value they’ll gain when they carry it through toa built home. People aren’t typically “visionary.” They need to seethe dream in black and white to understand. So we go through aprocess to make the visions come to life in the client’s mind.

Before a design is ever set on paper, the builder and team quantify the project—size restrictions, room counts, budget constraints.Everyone starts on the same page, though maybe in differentparagraphs!

The design process usually starts with the architect’s roughsketches and narrative vision. At this phase, photographs of builtprojects with similar detailing or catalogs that show the product,like this publication, help paint a clear picture and establishcredibility. This is when the client and team will test and questiondesign ideas, develop estimates and establish budgets. Then, oncethe basic design is approved, it’s on to the computer.

Once everyone has caught the vision, it’s time for the rubber tohit the road, to input the sketches into the computer and todevelop details with CAD drawings. This is where we carry theplans through to their finished level of detail, determine walllocations, establish finishes and finalize elevation styles. Because of

the sophistication of CAD programs and all of the additional toolsthat manufacturers provide to use as we develop conceptualdrawings, we can really start to bring a building to life.

If you’re using an accent like wood, shutters or manufactured stonein your plan, CAD gives you the opportunity to answer questions like

Where will it be placed? Where will the product start? How does it wrap? Where does it terminate? What would it look like if we selected

a different product style?Many product manufacturers have CADadd-on templates such as Cultured Stone®

StoneCAD.® They make it easy to studyevery alternative and make the alternativessimple to communicate. These tools areinvaluable for clearly illustrating the visionand establishing credibility for products.

Finally, you’ve got to sell potential buyerson the vision—the built home. Your bestopportunity to sell is to get them out of thecar, so the elevation details have to becarried to the highest level. You’ve got topush the budget envelope to add characterand style and build desire, balancing costversus impact, understanding thatmaximizing value in the eyes of the buyeris the key. Where accent materials areplaced is often more important to adesign’s success than how much materialis used.

You’ve taken a project from dream todefinition to details to “great job” byconceptualizing, establishing credibility,developing consensus and constantcommunication. And, at every step of theprocess, you’ve used readily availabletechnology and tools to make it easier tocreate the shared vision that becomes ashared reality.

The smooth Water Wash texture isdurable enough to walk on and createsan informal mood for a wandering pathin a garden setting. Patio Pavers, aTerra Craft® product with a five-yearlimited warranty, come in four colors.Pavers come in random sizes from 6"to 18" and are 1-3/4" thick. WaterWash Patio Pavers are specificallydesigned for walkways and patios andaren’t made for use in driveways.However, they can be used asHearthstones, and their colorcompatibility with other textures isdiscussed on page 80.
